This is a pretty expensive gift, but you could get her a Citrus Lane membership--it's a company that sends a monthly care package with 4-5 items based on the child's age. You can buy 3, 6, or 12-month subscriptions. It seems pretty awesome, and I love the idea of a gift that keeps on giving! If I can afford it I'm totally getting a year-long package for my friend who's due in February.

@spaniellove: Are they having any kind of party coming up? Like a naming ceremony/baptism/or something like that? Maybe you can book a gluten-free catering package for them for whatever next even they have planned.

@eiko2010: I love the photoshoot idea too!

I've considered having gluten-free meals delivered b/c the mom has celiac but I've had some trouble finding a service like that locally...all I've been able to find are caterers :/

I was also going to suggest either an Amazon giftcard or a Prime membership if they don't already have one. I also love the newborn photoshoot idea!

A gift card is definitely a fallback option, although we'd love to find some kind of "thing" for them. DH and I still have gifts from our aunts and uncles from when we were born! It's just so hard to please SIL, though.

@artbee: I love the newborn photoshoot idea! If she has a very particular taste/style - maybe you can do a generous Visa gift card and make a note that she can pick out the photographer of her choosing and use the gift card towards payment for the shoot/prints?

How about a cute necklace for her with a baby charm on it? I mean, not very practical but she's obviously not making practical easy for you! Or if you're waiting until the baby comes to give the gift, it could be almost anything.... with a gift receipt LOL

I didnt have a shower or registry either, people bought me lots of diapers or other baby gear like carriers, swings etc but they bought it for me after the baby was born.

That's a tough one! My sister gave me one of my favorite gifts, a newborn photoshoot. Another friend made me a scrapbook with cute baby stickers in it and personalized it with my LO's name, so all I had to do was print out pictures and stick them in there. You could do something like that and give a gift certificate to a place for her to print out the pictures.

I did no shower or registry (Jewish - crazy traditions). I'd suggest a sweet gift for the mom - like a new baby survival kit for mom, and a generous Amazon gift card - or prime membership if she doesn't have it. Cuz if they wait til he's born to get stuff, Amazon will be their new best friend!

I'm starting to look for a nice gift for SIL's new baby, due in October. It's a little tough though because there's no shower, no registry, and they don't want anything baby-related in their home until after he is born. If I had any idea what her approach to parenting was or what she needs I might know what to get her, but DH and I know nothing except she is upset about having a boy (so I don't want to emphasize the boy part) and going to have a nanny from day 1. And I'm afraid to offend her taste in design. What on earth can we get her?
