Nail clippers, newborn body wash/shampoo, baby toothbrush (?), those awesome peach face wipes that smell so good, maybe tiny socks or booties, a rattle or wubanub, newborn mittens, butt paste, aquafor if it's a boy?

The saline to go with the Nose Frida, nail scissors/nail clippers, pacis that AREN'T Avent Soothies, Gripe Water, gas drops, Medela nipple shield if she plans to BF, a Taggies lovey, a pack of Green Sprouts terry bibs, a package of cloth diapers to use as burp cloths, Baby Bum Brush.

Also, if you set up a baby registry for Target (literally go online, make one and put like nothing on it, just sign up) and go to customer service at the store, they will give you a new mom's bag that has coupons and samples. I got a Munchkin Latch bottle and a MAM pacifier for free, plus a coupon for a free Starbucks beverage. You can get that and stick it in the basket for your friend. Or if she already has a Target registry, let her know about the bag.

Books are always appreciated, even by people that say no gifts, so I would include a couple. I'd do a mix of board books for now and some hardcover for later.

I like the idea of "things I sent my husband out to buy in the middle of the night"- so nose frida, saline nose spray, gas drops, gripe water, infant Tylenol, small diaper rash cream. I also love my light up nail clippers.

Baby vicks? Snacky foods for mom post-partum or maybe a gift card to a delivery place?

Also maybe breast pads and lanolin for Mom if she plans on nursing? Avennt even makes a nice kit in a pouch with ice packs, pads, and lanolin.

Yes to boogie wipes! Maybe zutano booties if they are in your budget. A few different trial size packs of wipes? My daughter couldn't use a bunch so it's a pain to try a bunch of brands and if they don't have issues is always nice to have them for the diaper bag.

Maybe a gift card for take out, a box of granola bars and a nice water bottle?

Wash cloths (these are always gross after one kid, IMO), higher end bath/lotion products, a bath toy, wipes....(trying not to repeat the earlier ideas).

ETA: what about a few types of pacifiers to try and a paci/toy clip?

I might add some infant ibuprofen too (although I know it can't be used prior to 6 months). How about boogie wipes and saline nose spray.

Our friends are having a baby shower kind of get together, but they said no gifts since they don't want a bunch of junk and clutter and expect to get some hand me downs. Id like to make a little basket of newborn essentials. So far I have Tylenol, nose frida, and thermometer. Can you think of anything else that would be good to include?
