@pelikila: yup, i'll use ready-to-feed. I still have a ton of unexpired ones from the hospital and a parenting expo I went to! If I recall correctly, those powder canisters expire 30 days from opening, right? Yea I'd most likely not use that all up in 30 days with the amount I'll be using.

@NYCaliMama: If you don't have much breastmilk to play around with maybe pick up one or two ready-to-eat formula bottles so you aren't stuck with a whole canister of powdered formula but you can still possibly taste-tempt your baby.

@NYCaliMama: Yes, I decided to do cold turkey. It was a bit stressful as she didn't drink very much at first. I had to play around with a few cups but once I tried the Zolibot straw cup on her that was it. She was so excited by the cup and loved getting her milk in it.

Once RJ learned to drink from a straw (learned using water), we switched to cow's milk in straw cups (after he turned 1) and never let him have another bottle again. He didn't drink much milk at all in the beginning, but he ate plenty of yogurt and cheese so we didn't worry too much. Once he got used to it, he drank out of a straw cup fine.

We have water in a straw cup all day long, and milk in a straw cup at meals. No juice yet. He's 2.

@Andrea: so at 15 months, she went from milk in bottles to straw cups without a problem? How'd you do it? Cold turkey or one feed at a time? Lucky you!

@Rubies: I do like that idea! Thank you.

@Mrsbells: Yeah I considered that.... but at one time, she LOVED milk in bottles (literally, she would guzzle it down every time), but not drink the same exact thing in a straw cup, so I didn't think it was a lack for a taste for milk, just stubbornness in getting it in a bottle?

I loved milk growing up and as an adult. I see it as a really healthy part of one's diet for an excellent source of calcium, vitamin D, and other vitamins. I think it's because my mom pushed milk on me a lot as I was growing up though. I'll keep trying I guess and ask 2.0's ped his suggestion at our 6 month visit tomorrow.

Thanks for all your viewpoints everyone!

I always kept the type of liquid consistent by type of cup. So I gave water only in the sippy cup. This was around 6 months although she didn't like water until a few months after that. And then it was milk only in a straw cup after we got rid of bottles at 15 months. Sorry, I don't have experience with what to do with breastmilk.

I didnt like milk as a child, I drank it from a bottle as a baby but wouldnt drink it from a cup once i started drinking from cups. I drank chocolate milk or had milk in cereal but couldnt drink it on its own. Maybe she just doesnt like milk that much

DS is 9 months and has been playing around with a sippy for about 2 months. He knows how to use it, but I think the one we have is hard for him to get the liquid out of. (We have a Nuk with training handles.) I put water in it first, then a little breastmilk. DH gave him orange juice once "to see what he'd do", but he didn't do that again because we aren't giving him juice until he is much older.

I got a few pouches of baby food, which DS likes, and he learned how to suck the food out of them. I'm thinking we'll try a straw sippee next.

If you have enough breastmilk to play with that would be my first choice but it not and water doesn't interest your baby, use formula. That way you aren't wasting your milk but it might be enough to temp baby to learn to drink from the sippy.

My LO is 5 months old and we're just starting to think about introducing a sippy cup (she's EBF from the boob (won't take a bottle at all) and we're not starting solids until she's 6 months). I plan on giving her the sippy cup with a bit of water in it just to get her practicing. I won't put breastmilk in it because I feel she'll waste it. I think when she's older and has fully learned to use a sippy I might consider putting breastmilk.

Maybe for your LO you can literally put 1 tbsp on breastmilk plus 1 tbsp of water in the cup just to her her to practice without taking away the taste of milk completely?? Sorry, I don't have real advice... :(

So when my first DD started on a sippy, I just gave her a sippy with either water or diluted juice in it. When it came down to weaning her from her bottles of milk though, this became a problem. She wouldn't drink milk from sippies or straw cups at all. We went through a week of her resisting any milk at all to the point where her ped said just stop bottles, and give her lots of dairy foods (cheese, yogurt, etc...) and calcium supplements. After a few months of this, she finally started drinking milk again and through straw cups, but it had to be chocolate milk. I dilute it with regular milk though to cut down on the extra sugar. But to this day (almost 4 yo), she still can't drink straight up regular milk. Makes me sad because I looove milk and so did she back when they were in her bottles.

I don't want this to happen with 2.0... I want her to be able to drink milk from sippies and straw cups from the get go. But she's just 6 months and EBF. Do I put breastmilk in the cups? I feel like it will all just go to waste while she learns how to use it.

What do you put in sippies and straw cups? When did you start?
