We did pulled pork sandwiches made in the crockpot, chicken legs (sooo cheap and easy) baked potato bar, chips and dip, and a variety of desserts. For low stress I'd definitely recommend utilizing a crockpot.

I would probably do soup or bbq in crockpots like pp said, but brunch is easy too. Mini bagels, cream cheese, fruit salad, frozen mini quiches, sausage.
Or lasagna. Make ahead or buy frozen, plus garlic bread and salad.
If you do soup in crockpots maybe one cream based (baked potato, broccoli cheese) and one broth based (chicken noodle, beef and veg) plus some cracker and cheese platters, veggie and fruit trays, and little rolls.

I'm with you on the cooking = stress, haha. I'd rather run around with the kids and mingle with adults than worry about preparing food! It's very common around here to just cater, even for small parties.

So far I've seen catered sandwiches with homemade crockpot soup, catered Thai food, catered Mediterranean food, and catered Hawaiian/fusion food. Also have seen catered Chipotle which is basically a make your own bowl type of thing and that went over very well.

If you want to order in rather than cooking, I would go with BBQ. Get some pulled pork and pulled chicken with rolls to make sandwiches, and some yummy sides like mac and cheese and baked beans, and call it a day.

What about a few crockpots filled with different soups and chilis? Then you can have a bunch of large cups and people can just get tastings of what they want?

I went to a first birthday party recently and they served potato salad, a mixed green salad, pulled pork sliders with the pork in a crock pot, and some cut up fruits. I went to another party that had us make our own tacos (carne asada or chicken) with all the toppings and then sides of rice, beans and chips.

We did a chili bar for LO's first birthday last November. I made a big batch of chili in the crockpot and set out bowls with fixin's to "sprinkle" on top. We had cheese, onions, jalapeños, Fritos, cilantro, and cornbread.

We also served hot dogs for the kids and for dessert we did a caramel apple bar - used two small crockpots for caramel and chocolate dip and had sliced apples to dip in and bowls of sprinkles, chopped nuts, chocolate chips and coconuts for people to sprinkle on top.

You could totally get away with crock pot chili (or just stove top chili) and serve it with lots of fixins'. People can easily eat it with a spoon standing up.

We just had chili for about 7 family members and even that was time consuming and stressful (with an 8 month old). It sounded like it would be easy but the prep was a lot of work. I decided that for his first birthday we will do pizza. Could you do pizza and wings and some fruit/veggie platters and chips? Not sure how casual you want to go!

We go overboard with food. Here is what we typically have - hot dogs with chili, nachos, jambalaya (order from a local restaurant), potato salad (made by family), fruit tray, bags of single serve chips, pork and chicken grilled by my husband, and sometimes finger sandwiches (made by my sister) plus the cake and ice cream. We like food and the party typically lasts all day.

I hate entertaining but this works for us.

We are having J's first birthday party in late November. It's going to be at our home. Just family, but that works out to 27 people (mostly adults and a few older kids). Definitely casual and more of an - adults milling around chatting and playing with the kids - format.

Cooking for parties really stresses me out so I've usually ordered some sandwich platters from a local stores and had that with some veggies and dip, and a fruit salad (obviously plus cake). I would love to do that again, but this whole group was just here a month ago for M's birthday and I kind of want to give them something different. Maybe something a little "cozier" with the late fall date? We don't have room for everyone to sit, so I feel like that limits things a bit.

Help me out Bees! What would you serve?
