@cnidaria: We have the Deuter Kid Comfort II as well and still love it with our 35 lb 3 year old. It's very comfortable!

@Mrs. Cereal: @Corduroy: Our daycare is in an urban area where lots of families commute via walking, potentially non-trivial distances. I see plenty of preschool aged kids being pushed in with strollers and I've never thought twice about it.

I still put my 3 and 5 year olds in a stroller when needed. No shame

@Mrs. Cereal: Our daughter is younger (21 months, weighs 12 kg) but we use a framed backpack carrier... ours is a Deuter Kid Comfort II that we bought second hand and it's really comfortable to wear hiking (we've done a 6 hour mountain hike with her in it). She can't stand her stroller, but loves the backpack and will nap in it while we're hiking. I find the fact that it has an actual frame plus the hip belt makes it much easier to carry her weight vs using a SSC or wrap. The seat height is adjustable and the backpack can take up to 22 kg, so I can see this lasting us for awhile yet!

I think it depends on the sort of hiking you're doing, too... some of the hikes we go on just wouldn't work with a stroller due to the terrain.

@Mrs. Cereal: i was really surprised at what a difference the bigger toddler panel made. Wearing her in a baby sized panel is painful!

I much prefer a woven wrap with how much she weighs but she usually won't hold still long enough to be wrapped

@MamaBear87: Yeah, the thought of him on my back is pretty unappealing. :silly: We still have our ergo and he fits but man is it rough on my posture.

He’s pretty big/tall so I don’t think an SSC would work anymore for him. I was kinda worried I would be judged for having him in a stroller, but I guess that was dumb. I start looking for a jogging style one to use for him.

I’m glad other people use them for their toddlers and little kids. Idk why I was so worried about it?

@Mrs. Cereal: we have a bob and my 6.5 year old still rides in it sometimes when she gets lazy at the zoo/parks etc. my 3 y/o rides in it more.

We also have a hiking backpack that we got when our first was 1. We used it I think until she was 4 or 4.5? Right now with the (just turned) 3 year old he rides in it a decent amount and walks a little at the beginning and the end for hikes. We have a Chicco one and have liked it. It was definitely cheaper than a bob if you don’t have either right now!

@Corduroy: no judgement on big huge kids in strollers!

We have a Kelty Kids hiking pack that's we've used for longer hikes and we love it, especially that we can take it off and set him down in it.

@Mrs. Cereal: We still use our double bob occassionally for our 5 and 3 yo kids for long hikes/walks. As a family walkkng we top out at about 1 mile or 30 min. We will do 5-6 miles in the stroller. We aren’t going for strenuous hikes. When we hit hills I kick the 80lbs of kids out of the stroller and make them walk.

ETA: I might be an outlier because I’m wishing I could use the stroller to get my soon to be Kindergartener to school quickly. Somebody tell me that’s ok.

@Mrs. Cereal: how big is the toddler? My 2.5 year old is still so teeny I put her in our SSC on my back very comfortably but that wouldn’t work as well for a big baby.

I still put my almost five year old in our double jogger sometimes when we hike. It's nice because the kids can do some of the hike walking and some hanging out. I also like using our dueter backpack for my almost three year old, but it can be kind of hard to get on by myself.

We usually take a toddler soft structured carrier. My giant 2.5 year old prefers to be worn on my front and hubby's back so we've never bothered with one of the hiking ones. A bigger toddler ssc makes all the difference in comfort though

We also used her stroller last time we went but I think hubby would have preferred the carrier as he ended up doing all the pushing uphill, 500 feet over a mile is no joke 😂

Ok, so I feel dumb even asking this, but I am trying to figure out what to use for my son (3) for hiking. I want him to join me for more of my hiking and birding activities, but he is SO slow. Like seriously, he is a dawdler and he makes the pace way slower than I would like. He also gets tired and then I end up carrying him, which is also not ideal.

I was thinking about getting a jogging style stroller, but I feel weird about having a three year old in one. Does anyone on here have suggestions of what I could use? Do any of you use jogging strollers for a kid that age? Or is a hiking back pack a better idea? Help me figure this out!
