My "uniform" was nursing tank tops and yoga pants. At night I wore nursing tanks and pj pants. I was able to wear my pre maternity yoga and pj pants almost immediately. I also had a couple of pairs of nursing pjs.

When I went out I wore a mix of maternity and larger pre pregnancy clothes.

Not a clothing suggestion, but what really made my life easier at home was a few crib sized waterproof mattress pads. I had one on the couch and one in my bed so in case I had a leaking accident, I didn't have to worry about washing a ton of laundry.

I also had some cotton underwear from Hanes, I hated the mesh panties and I didn't care if these got wrecked, I just tossed them after 6 weeks.

@mewtill: That's great advice about patience. I typically have none lol. The baby will change that!
@tysonja: I need to find some of those longer sweaters. Luckily with fall around the corner they should start showing up in stores soon.

yes!! the nursing tank + cardigan and jeans is a great combo too :)

i preferred the longer, thin cardigans with lots of extra fabric at the front draping down (what are they called?!) -- i liked wrapping the extra fabric around my belly when i was sitting down ;)

those ballet type cardigans would be really pretty too! if you're having a fall baby that is :)

I wore short cardigans & zip-up hoodies with nursing tanks. I also wore a lot of gauzy scarfs to cover the nursing boobs. And leggings! I wore my maternity ones (and still do 10 months later!).

As for transitional clothes, I waited until about 14 weeks and thought "whelp, this is my new body, time to buy clothes."and spent a bunch of money. Well, that was NOT my new body and those clothes are all too big/frumpy now. So have patience postpartum :)

You guys are the best! Thank you for your suggestions. Sounds like I just need to buy a few basics and I'll be set. I didn't want to spend a lot of money on postpartum clothes anyway since who knows how long I'll really fit in them.

When you ladies are talking cardigans, are you meaning short cardigans or longer boyfriend sweaters?

Target tank tops and yoga pants, if I was staying in. Hell, if I was going to the grocery store, this is what I wore. When I needed to actually get dressed, I just made sure I had a top that could be pulled up or something, it didn't have to be pull-the-bust-to-the-side top. Tshirts worked well, maybe with a cardigan on top.

loose fitting skirts, a nursing tank and a cardi (it was spring for me). I much preferred skirts because there was no crotch to rub and be generally uncomfortable, iykwim!. the skirt I had was a maternity skirt with a fold over waistband so I imagine it would even be alright after a csection?

Yoga pants and nursing tank tops! At 9 weeks post partum, my best recommendation is don't buy too much transitional stuff--and if you buy anything, don't spend too much! Yoga pants/leggings and nursing tops are good because they'll likely still fit once your belly shrinks down. I bought two pairs of shorts 3 weeks pp that fit 4 weeks ago, but are now 2 sizes too big!

Not only was I bigger than I expected to be PP but I also had a bad tear which made comfort even more important. I wore (and still wear!) a lot of yoga pants or summery cotton skirts with an elastic waistband. For nursing I just got a bunch of inexpensive v-neck tops a size up (Old Navy is great for inexpensive PP/nursing/transitional pieces!)

I wore maternity shirts and tanks for months plus yoga pants and athletic shorts. For "real clothes", I wore skirts and shorts one size up. Loft was having a big sale.

For the first few weeks pp, I wore a lot of my maternity clothes. Then I wanted to burn them lol since I had been wearing them so long and wanted so badly to be in "real" clothes again.

Same as others have mentioned: yoga pants, tanks and t-shirts. I also lived in maxi dresses, or short dresses with leggings.

If you're just hanging out at home, any old shirt is fine, I wore a combo of maternity tees and tanks, nursing tanks, and a few pre-preg tees and tanks. A true nursing shirt is nice if you're out in public nursing since it typically gives you a little more coverage, but if you're on your own couch, who cares what's hanging out! You can also get more coverage by layering a nursing tank and regular shirt so one pulls up and one down. On bottom, I had a summer baby so I lived in gym shorts or two knee length jersey knit maternity skirts from Old Navy which made me feel a little less slobby when I went out running errands.

I started off wearing nursing tops but i got so sick of them and actually found it easier to just lift my shirt up. I also wore lots of yoga pants and the odd maternity pant. IMO i wouldnt go out and buy a bunch of postpartum clothes. Just wear comfy clothes!

@marionberry: I've been living in yoga pants and tank tops. I only bought one nursing tank, I'd recommend just buying some stretchy tanks/tops. For going out the first couple of weeks I wore maternity jeans, then I was able to fit into my old fat jeans lol

Ok so I definitely need to go out and buy 2 pair of yoga pants. I got a pair of maternity ones from Target at the beginning of my pregnancy but there's no way I could fit in them now. I have a few maxi skirts and maternity jeans and such, so the other focus would be some additional nursing tanks. Currently I only have 2.

So you recommend a regular extra big t-shirt vs a specialized "nursing" top? It would certainly be cheaper which I'm a fan of.

i had a couple of maternity tops that were nursing friendly and i wore them with maternity jeans for the longest time. also i had a big sweater with a neck that i could pull down to nurse and wore it over leggings - that was so comfortable! at home i had a nursing night gown that became like my uniform. or i just wore jogging pants/shorts and stretchy tanks.

I wore my maternity jeans or yoga pants until I got a few pairs of bigger than normal jeans to wear until I lost the weight. And any tank top or T-shirt that had a stretchy enough neck to pull down to nurse, lol. I was a fan of old navy v necks.

I've read all of the posts about what to wear in those few days at the hospital after birth, but what do you wear once you get home?

It can't be all pajamas (though I'll take recommendations for those too) because you have to go back out in public for doctor and lactation consultant visits. And doesn't it need to all be nursing friendly? Most of my current maternity clothing is not.

Please send me recommendations for postpartum clothing! I'm freaking out that I need a lot of stuff I don't have yet. Thanks (in advance)!
