We went tubing in Big Bear in December when DS was 3.5 and DD was almost 2. I put them in two layers of clothing (long-sleeved shirt on top of a tshirt and pants) under their snow pants/bib and coat. They also had snow boots. We're from SD and not used to the cold. They also had gloves and a hat.

It all depends on the temperature. For skiing it's easy to get cold but if you're snowboarding it is much more work and you'll get warm quickly! Just make sure you have all skin covered even if it's not a thick layer. I do a fleece gaitor and earband on my head and I wear a top with thumb holes so there's no wrist skin exposed between the gloves and jacket. For sledding if you're walking up the hill you'll get warm quickly!

@ShootingStar: oh a gaiter - good idea!

In addition, make sure you have great ski socks and a solid lined hat. That is where you lose a lot of heat if you don't spring for quality.

You actually get pretty cold skiing. I usually wear a layer of thermals under pants and a fleece vest, then ski pants, coat, neck gaiter, and hat.

I think it totally depends on the temperature! Remember that they will be climbing back up the hill and probably going to be getting hot too. I would be hesitant to layer too much under the snow pants!

I always put a layer under my son's snowbib...what about a set of thermal underwear?

Trying to figure out how warmly to dress my kids for snow tubing and snow boarding (DS)

They have snow bibs - should they wear just a shirt and their winter coat or shirt/sweatshirt and winter coat? I am a freezing cold person by nature so I wear lots of clothes - haha - but wondering if you get warm while tubing/snow boarding?
