We use the Natural Dentist brand with fluoride. She started spitting at maybe 2 and a half so that's when we switched from the baby kind.

Tom's of Maine strawberry flavor with fluoride. He's looking forward to trying the mango orange next, but this tube has lasted over a year of twice a day use! He's good with spitting, but even before that the dentist encouraged us to use the one with fluoride, to use an amount equivalent to a grain of rice, then work up to pea-size.

We have the tom's fluoride-free and hello brand with fluoride. I alternate them every other night. (DS is 16 months.)

I bought a double pack of jack n Jill flouride free toothpaste before I realized the recommendations on flouride for kids had changed, whoops. LO loves water and our tap water is fluoridated so hopefully that evens it out! Once we use these up we'll switch to flouride paste, but then she'll probably be 2 anyhow. Maybe I should get some flouride paste to use weekly before then...@yellowbird: worth it?

As a side note I thoight spitting toothpaste was just a gross habit until I was at least 8 yo or something and swallowed my toothpaste...and I turned out fine! Haha. Our water wasn't flouridated so I was on supplements.

Toms of Maine and always with fluoride. She learned to spit very early on.

We switch DD to Colgate Kids toothpaste with fluoride when she turned 3. Prior to that she used Toms Strawberry flavored toothpaste without fluoride but I had her practice rinsing and spitting and once she was good about it I switched her. She still prefers her strawberry toothpaste...she says the Colgate one is too spicy. Haha. So I let her use the non-fluoride one in the morning and the fluoride one at night.

DD (2) uses Toms with flouride. Per ped's recommendation, we put a tiny amount on her toothbrush each night, which she doesn't spit out. We don't have flouride in our water though, so this is the only flouride she receives.

Agree with the posters above. DS is almost 4 and uses Tom's Wicked Cool toothpaste, which has fluoride in it. He hasn't figured out spitting during brushing yet (though he does rinse and spit at the end), but I weighed the small amount he may swallow against the cavity protection and decided when he was 3.5 to make the switch.

We just started DS1 on fluoride toothpaste last night, not knowing if he could spit. (He did!) DH is in med school and said that there's been a huge increase in cavities and that people(?) are now saying a small amount of fluoride (like maybe once a week?) would be preferable to the cavities kids are getting without it. That's me generalizing what he said, which was also a generalization... He's not in dental school after all..

Anyway, we decided to start, and DS wasn't spitting we would limit it to a pea size amount once a week, and stick to our Jack N' Jill fluoride free paste the rest of the time.

Dd uses crest I think. The tube has princesses on it. Yes we use fluoride, I'm kind of obsessed with fluoride :silly: she started spitting around 2 years but not well. I always put the toothpaste on and use a rice grain sized amount. I think the topical benefit far outweighs the risk of swallowing such a small amount (fluoride supplements ha e waaaaayyy more fluoride than that and the risk of fluorosis is still small.)

I just started brushing Ds teeth. I just use water right now

And do they still use fluoride free? If not, when did you switch? When did your LO master to spit? Tips on teaching my LO how to do this?

My 3.5 year old still doesn't get the concept to spit out the toothpaste, so we are still using fluoride free. We just finished up Tom's brand and then LO picked out one with Paw Patrol on at the store so we are using that currently.
