Right now, redirection is HUGE at our house with an 18 month old. My husband will get frustrated and tell L "don't do this...don't chew on this" and really, all you have to do is offer him a NEW thing and he stops what he's doing. It's magical. (for now at least.)

@Mae: she's not wild about getting her head directly under the water, but she really likes it otherwise! Keeps her warm, I think. She has only ever cried once in the shower, so I count that as a victory! But I could see how it might upset some babies. We just didn't five her a choice from the beginning, lol.

@MapleMoose: TIME OUT-I missed this. CONGRATS!!!!

Logistics: when there are two of us home, one of us jumps in the shower and washes, then the baby gets passed in to us. We wash her, then pass her out to the other person. But I have done it by myself, and it's not that bad. I imagine that if LO could sit, it would be much easier. YOu could even put a towel down there and have baby sit on it, so that it wasn't so slippery. I used to bathe my little sister this way, and she loved sitting in the tub when I showered. There was a thread about it a few weeks ago. It seems like a bunch of people do it, and I reallylike it!

When DD was little, sleeping with her Pack N Play right up against the bed. When she woke up at night I could just reach over to replace her pacifier and turn on her white noise without needing to get out of bed. I would only get up when she really woke up crying and needed food in the night.

More recently, having my toddler participate in feeding our pet bunny his breakfast every day. She was absolutely terrified of animals until we started doing this. Now she loves her rabbit and always wants to pet him and feed him treats!

@LovelyPlum: I'm curious about the logistics of this. It would save us a lot of time now with baby #2 on the way but I keep imagining LO#1 shivering and covered in soap on the floor of the shower while I'm trying not to fall on her shaving my legs... :silly:

In the beginning it was babywearing, for sure. Wouldn't have gotten anything done without wearing her. And she wouldn't have slept!

@MrsMccarthy: The flavor isn't exactly the same, and it takes a little bit more work, but but E always goes crazy over butternut squash mac and cheese. Just mix pureed butternut squash into the cheese sauce before you toss it with the pasta.

Side-lying nursing + co-bedding was definitely my game-changer. E refused to sleep unless he was being held, so I credit those things with allowing me to being not-horrible sleep-deprived all of the time (only a little :) )

Just tried this today and it's a lifesaver!:

My picky toddler wont eat veggies unless they are in a fruity pouch. he picks them out and finds them in everything. The internets suggested putting chopped or pureed steamed cauliflower in with his foods like mac n cheese and mashed potatoes since its white and hides! it's working! he is licking it off his hands right now! genius. Thank you internets!

Babywearing! I can't imagine raising a baby without wearing. It makes so many things so much easier.

Babywearing WHILE nursing. Best trick ever. I love my wrap and my mei tai for that.

Co-sleeping. It's not exactly a "trick" but dang, it works for us. From day 1 to now at 16 months, I love it.

There are a few, but I want to share this one.

Spending that $3 to feed a giraffe with 2 pieces of lettuces at the zoo really changed the game for us. Before that, LO would NOT eat any kind of greens other than steamed broccoli and green beans. But after we fed the giraffe with lettuce, I bought lettuce and offered it to him, saying that this is what giraffes love to eat, and what we fed to the giraffe. And he gobbles them down!!! Nowadays, he eats raw lettuce and other raw green salad leaves without us even having to ask him. He sees it on the plate and he automatically grabs them and put them in his mouth. Highly recommended :)

Other than that, 1,2,3 and timeout really helped a lot in resolving difficult situations both at home or outside. (duh! )

Nursing laying down changed my life!

And now that he's a toddler we say "bye bye _____" to whatever we need to stop doing.

Another thing is if we don't want him to play with something (adult hockey sticks come to mind) we tell him that they're "sleeping".

@Cherrybee: The pouch is a God-send. My baby hates the spoon.

Side-lying nursing is the only way I will feed in the middle of the night now. Sometimes I can stay awake, and sometimes we snooze together. But it has improved my quality of sleep greatly. Especially during the regressions. Baby wearing is also a huge help for me, like when I need to walk the dog or LO is fussing in the morning. It is wonderful!
