Yo gabba gabba has been great for distracting dd on car rides. We bought a few episodes on iTunes so that we wouldn't have to rely on internet connection. Dh and I actually like the "dance" and "eat" episodes. She is more into bubble guppies, Daniel tiger and frozen now, but yo gabba gabba was her first love ;)

@allison: Curious George and Sesame Street were the ones that worked with her when traveling at 18 months.. Yes, she is obsessed with Elmo...I don't know what it is about him! (On the plus side, she stopped fighting diaper changes when I pointed out her diapers had Elmo on them, lol. "George" is a hit too. She likes the Fisher Price free apps, but hasn't been into apps lately. She's 20 months now. I showed her Wonder Pets yesterday for the first time and she liked it.

@lovehoneybee: That video - doesn't it stick in your head so you find yourself randomly bursting into "brush brush, brush brush brushy brush"? - was the start of A's obsession with Elmo  Totally my fault!

@allison: The Baby Einstein animal videos have been a lifesaver for us. I agree with pps about Frozen and anything with Elmo on. Good luck with the journey!

The Elmo ABC app is awesome - it has video, a place where they can "color" (using their fingers on the screen), etc. some stuff you'll have to do for your LO, but much of it is good for an 18 month old.

The monster at the end of the book app - more Elmo.

Bloom is a great app for kids

The Disney movie app is good, in part because you don't need wifi/internet access to access your movies. My LO loved pooh and jungle book at around 18 months

Also, "talking ginger kitty" is a big hit in our house. It's an orange cat who repeats to your child whatever they say to the cat. There are also some game type activities with the kitty, but the talking part is the best part.

@allison: E insists on sleeping with TWO Elmo dolls in his crib! He will throw a fit if they aren't both there! And lately, the only way I can get him to brush his teeth/let me brush them is to watch the Elmo teeth-brushing video--like 5 times in a row.

Will you have internet access? If so, I recommend the PBS app. Sadie is 18m and can scroll through and pick what she wants to watch. It's super easy to use. If you have Disney at home, the Watch Disney Jr app is great too.

If no internet access, I would put some movies and TV shows into your iTunes account. Every kid loves Frozen. Toy Story is a big hit here, and Sadie especially like the shorts (Partysaurus Rex, Toy Story of Terror, etc.) - they're good lengths for toddlers. As for TV shows, try Bubble Guppies, Peppa Pig, Dinosaur Train, and Mickey Mouse Clubhouse.

@coacheswife123: Thanks! He loves animals, so I bet he'll like those apps!

@lovehoneybee: seriously, WTF is it with Elmo? He's never even seen the show, but he has a couple tiny books with Elmo and has seen album cover art on Pandora with Elmo, and he gets soooo excited when he sees him! So bizarre, to me. I'm a little scared to try Sesame Street for this reason (fear of obsession). Ha!

Thanks for the other suggestions, too. I'll try them!

At that age E wasn't really much into Daniel Tiger (he is now) but he LOVED Super Why and Sesame Street (specifically, any/everything with Elmo...).

For movies, he loves The Muppets (the Jason Segel one), Frozen (Olaf...), and a TMBG Here Comes Science (a series of animated songs about science).

For apps he mostly plays the Endless series (Alphabet, Reader and 123).

J likes Mickey Mouse clubhouse. Also all these apps are lifesavers for us ! I downloaded like 2738373 because they are all the lite version and only have like 4 animals each . All the peek-a-zoo apps are great and have taught him to identify crazy animals like walrus and mandrill!

Driving across the country in a couple weeks, and I need some recommendations for the iPad.

He doesn't currently get any regular screen time, but we just drove 8 hours and it went HORRIBLY. We even did the new-toy-every-hour thing. Except it turned into new-toy-every-3-minutes. Also tried driving through the night. No dice. The iPhone worked the best, so we're getting an iPad and headrest mount for the drive.

All that to say, I don't really know what he likes when it comes to screen time, beyond the random animal YouTube video. He didn't love Daniel Tiger on the drive home. Liked, but not loved.

I need some help, so that I can maintain my sanity.
