@irene: This was about 4 months ago, so a little over 3.5.

Glad the puppet show went well! You are doing a great job exposing him to a lot of different cool things.

@lemondrop: Thanks for sharing! How old was your LO? Oh man, Labryinth is one of my favorite movies but I watched it when I was a lot older, like 13.

@lamariniere: haha, awww.... hope he grows out of it ! We bought the 3 little pigs illustrated book a few months ago and LO was quite interested in it. I remember showing the "who's afraid of the big bad wolf" song / Disney video clip of the 3 little pigs to my LO then. It was only 3 minutes. Again, he was traumatized and was very scared and said, don't show that to him ever again. I guess we have many years to go before going to Disney and actually have a good time.

So we went to the puppet show today and he really really enjoyed it except toward very last 2 minutes, he started crying but it was because he was hungry and sensory overload, so that's a different story. Phew....

@irene: you aren't alone! My son is 5 (since yesterday!) and is very afraid of animated films/cartoons. Things that do not appear scary at all, like no monsters, no car crashes, no weird things like noses growing, scare the pants off of him. Think of Bubble Guppies, it's totally not scary, but he refuses to watch it because he's scared of it. For a reason I have yet to figure out, he is extremely sensitive to just about all animation.

We were watching the nice parts of Jurassic Park, the dinosaurs walking around peacefully and he was so interested in it. It got farther along quicker than we remembered, and next thing we know the Jeep is falling down the trees and T-rex was after it. He freaked, "Jeep, dinosaur, HELP!"

He settled down after a few minutes, had a calm night, then asked again about it in the morning when we went to the garage (we have a Jeep) but we talked about how it wasn't real and was "no big deal" our code for everything is OK :)

ET, Dark Crystal, and Labyrinth used to terrorize me when I was their age, I'm still not a fan of those movies, but I've done just fine and am a big fan of Muppets ;)

@irene: I don't think it will spill over! And if it does, my son is usually OK if we just hold hands or if I let him rest his head against me... if he's leaning against me, he can watch anything!

@mrbee: Haha thank you for catching me as I was free falling down that hundred mile cliff of 0 posts lol

That's what I am worried right now - I hope it is not going to traumatize him so much that he would never want to watch a puppet show, or any show at all.... That would be my worst fear... and funny thing is, I actually purchased tickets to a show (not puppet show, but more like a theater show for the very young) on his birthday. I am keeping my fingers crossed and hoping for the best...

@irene: There's a movie based on "The Little Engine that Could" and the movie added a "Nightmare Train"... it was terrifying to my son when he watched it a few years ago!!

He also is terrified of Toy Story 3 since I showed it to him when he was four or so, and in fact has refused to watch Toy Story 1 or 2 as a result. Every time he sees a Toy Story logo, he tells me, "That's scary!"

My son is turning 4 next month. I have gotten tickets to a Pinocchio puppet show tomorrow and we have been pretty excited about it. Today we bought the Pinocchio Golden Books and I was reading it to him, hoping that he will have more fun at the show tomorrow. He was very interested and seemed to be really processing/thinking about it when I was telling the story. The book left out one important detail where Pinocchio's nose grew when he told a lie. So I went on YouTube and searched for a short 3 minute video of the Disney movie segment of how his nose grew when he was telling a lie to the blue fairy. After he watched it, he was like, this is very scary. I don't want to watch a video, or read that book ever again. I was surprised and asked, what is scary about it? He said he didn't like how Pinocchio's nose grew, and he is afraid his own nose would grow. I kept explaining no this is not gonna happen, it only happens because he told a lie. You are already a real boy and he was a puppet when his nose grew. Blah blah blah. He was still quite "traumatized" (couldn't think of a better word) and went to bed all quiet. Hmm. It makes me feel really bad and worried now and I hope he is not scared at the show tomorrow... and hopefully he is not going to have nightmares tonight...

How about you? What TV / video / movie moment scares your LO unexpectedly? What was your LO's age ?
