My old place had a total mold problem - we had to keep the fan on constantly or I'd swear, there'd be a new streak of mildew that popped up every week. We had a regular shag rug, but our dogs kept peeing on it (they are peepee pad trained so whenever they see anything on the ground, they think it's a pee pad and they pee on it - sigh) so we had to get rid of it. The water that leaked thru would just sit, which is why mold grew. I got one of these wooden bath mats from Costco to eliminate the problem, and it was good for a bit until I lifted it up for the first time and realized there was slimy green mold growing all underneath it...!! I didn't realize because you can't really see thru the slats.
