For my first baby I was minutes from a major medical center. This time we live in the sticks. Over an hour and a half to my hospital which could be amplified with snow or a storm considering I'm due February! This terrifies me! Last time I went a week over and ended up a c section. I'm guessing I'm lined up for Vbac and I was totally pro natural birth last time and was med free the whole way until (at 7 cm) they discovered she was breech. But now ... I kind of want a scheduled section. I feel nuts saying that but I'm so scared of the drive and the weather!

@MrsKoala: I've found two that are within an hour of my home, so we're going to set up meeting with them in the next month or so to see if it's something we'd like to do. Thanks for the info!

@erinpye: That's where I'm at, too. I want to be as informed as possible and go med-free and intervention-free as long as I can, but I know that things may come up that require all levels of intervention and we're open to that. I'm pretty matter-of-fact about things, so I don't see myself being someone who gets upset about deviating from the plan, but it's always a good reminder to be sure to be flexible and do what's best for baby.

Just like with baby 1, I'll be going in with a loose plan, but no expectations because many births do not follow plans. The last thing you want to be is married to a plan you're upset about having to change while in labor. I intended to labor as long as possible without meds, perhaps doing the entire thing naturally, and preferred not to be induced. Instead, a week late, I had low fluid, had to be induced, pitocin-induced contractions were 1 minute long and 1 minute apart, and I had back labor too. I decided on a epidural for the last couple of hours, and even though it didn't touch my back labor, I loved it and would do it again if I feel it's necessary. Didn't slow my labor down one bit, in fact I was ready to push hours before my OB expected, and was able to get up and walk myself to the bathroom right after delivery, no problems nursing right away either. Do what feels right, be open to unforeseen circumstances and last-minute changes.

@indi: Yes, there are two instructors close to me and the prices are pretty reasonable for the classes. I have to talk to my DH about it but I'm thinking we would start classes at the beginning of November. Have you thought about looking for a doula to support you as well? Dona.org has a feature where you can search for a trained doula in your area. Just a thought!

Thanks for all the responses!

@MrsKoala: Are there Bradley classes near you? We have nothing within hours of us, so it looks like it's up to me to get busy reading.

I think my fear of needles and my hippie tendencies will lead me to try to be med free. No birth centers or midwives around my area, though, so it looks like I'll be in the hospital with an OB. I am excited/nervous to meet the nurses/OB tomorrow at our first appointment. Hopefully DH and I get a good feeling from them, or we'll be looking at driving over an hour away for other options :-/

We are still WTT but I want whatever makes me LESS STRESSED. So I will be taking advantage of any pain meds as well as looking into a water birth at a birth center. Will welcome any medical personnel to be present.

I hoping to go med free and researching pain coping techniques to help me with that. Right now, I'm liking the Bradley Method. The OBGYN practice that I go to offers the option of going with OB or midwives and I'm leaning towards midwives right now but I don't have to decide yet. I'll just see who I connect with more as time goes on. I will be delivering at a hospital as we don't have any birthing centers in our area.

I am a January momma and I will be going in with the same mind set as last time. I would prefer no interventions but will take them if I need it. The epi sure felt AWESOME last time! However it did slow everything right down.

@runsyellowlites: Before we considered having kids I had in my mind I was going to have a homebirth! I was so upset when I found out about that. The closest hospital that allows midwives to deliver is an hour away. They are our backup in case we don't like our doctor that's close by. Birth centers aren't necessarily illegal but there have been quite a few cases of attempts to open one up here and doctors and hospitals protesting and keeping it from opening.

I considered traveling out of state to birth but it would be tough financially and hard to pull off. I've checked and double checked but there aren't any midwives close enough to the border that are willing to tread over here. In case of a transfer, they can get in big trouble for doing a homebirth, even if thy are licensed in their state. So frustrating.

I checked med free, though I don't care about med free necessarily, just would like to try to go without the epidural or other pain medicines. Just to see if I can! I have ZERO reluctance to ask for an epidural though if I need it. I just have always been told by my gyno's how HORRENDOUS my menstrual cramps are and how they compare to labor pains and want to truly see how they compare!

@Danizaur: Thanks! Boo that about your state..... after planning our first hbac I was really surprised to find out the states that don't allow midwives to birth out of hospital. We definitely won't ever live in any of those states! lol

Not sure where you are BUT I have spoken to quite a few moms that traveled over state borders to birth! My MW service our city from 2ish hours away soooooooo it could still be an option?...

@runsyellowlites: Hoping you get your homebirth! I would be having one but my state doesn't license lay midwives. It's impossible to find one that will do a homebirth in my state.

I'm hoping an in hospital natural birth will do!

I'm a might be February mom that is planning an unmedicated homebirth (maybe waterbirth), vbac, with a trained midwife & possibly a doula (definitely a birth assistant though)...

this is baby #3, 2nd vbac, 2nd planned homebirth, and hopefully 1st out of hospital birth!

I've always wanted a med free birth as long as I can remember. I was open to the idea of an epidural at first, but I watched my sister and sister in law suffer through an epidural that didn't stick and caused more problems than help. So I'm hoping to go into labor on my own, no Pitocin, no epidural, no medical interventions.

:)

I'm a Feb mummy, having LO #2 and I fully intend on getting another epidural. I had one with my first and firmly believe it is one of science's greatest inventions! I am hoping for a repeat of my first delivery experience - under the care of a midwife, in a hospital, fully working epidural and a spontaneous labour on my due date with no interventions necessary, other than a bit of pitocin at he pushing stage to speed up contractions (they were ten minutes apart at that stage). Hopefully things go to plan again!

Just curious to see how the February folks are hoping to deliver. I have learned so much from other bees' experiences, so I thought it'd be fun to share with our due date twins!

*Please forgive my out of order poll, I knew I'd inevitably forget LOTS of options. Please feel free to comment and share your plans :-)
