I don't think a convertible crib is necessary -- it's just that I liked the design of Charlie's crib. Most people prefer transitioning straight to a regular bed than using a toddler bed since you don't get much use out of a toddler bed. We have to buy a conversion kit to change Charlie's crib into a toddler bed, but we'll cross that milestone when we get to it.
