DH grew up in a restaurant and will only cook with gas so we have a gas range and a double often (that I never use, hah).

@erinbaderin: Thanks, I tried the magnet. It didn't work on any of the new-to-me stainless steel Cuisinart set, my nearly-vintage Farberware, or my copper-bottom pot! Do you know the model number/name of your oven? Maybe they make a non-induction version--that splitting feature for the oven sounds perfect!

@looch: That sounds great! My current one has the drawer on the bottom, but I've never stored anything there. It's not a warmer drawer either, so it's useless! What brand/model did you get?

@honeybear: I have a freestanding range, no wall ovens. I had a model where there was a drawer on the bottom for storage...basically, that storage drawer is moved to the top now and it's an oven. So there is a full sized (2 rack) oven on the bottom and one rack oven on top.

@honeybear: They might work - I'm pretty sure mine are stainless steel and fine. Apparently there are magnetic grades. Grab a fridge magnet and if it sticks to the bottom of your pots they'll work.

Another pro to my stove - there's an insert that makes it into a double oven. You slide this thing in the middle and it cuts it in half, and then you can heat just the top or bottom, or the two halves to different temperatures.

@honeybear: I don't use the cast iron stuff that often anyway. And I'm not terribly attached to any of my pans. So this thread is making me really want an induction top and double oven, when eventually we upgrade!

@youboots: @Littlebit7: @looch: Okay, double-oven evangelists, tell me about these! Do you have two full-sized wall ovens, or did you get the freestanding type with the smaller compartment on the top? I'd have to remodel to do wall ovens, so that's off the table for now, but I'm kind of intrigued by the idea of a smaller oven over a larger one in one unit. It seems like the most efficient option since a lot of the time I'm just baking one pie or pan of fish or whatever, and heating up a smaller space would be less wasteful. I do cook a turkey once a year, though, and I have a cast iron dutch oven that I use a lot for baking bread--is there space for a whole bird/bigger pans in the bigger compartment? I'll go investigate at the stores with measurements of my cookware, but I'd love to hear about your experiences! Any brand/style recommendations?

@T.H.O.U.: Interesting! I never thought about having the canister somewhere inside. Although I think I probably won't go that route right now. That would still require more reno work than I am inclined to do. Our kitchen is only a few years old, although apparently the appliances are about 5-6 years old (and mostly junk...we replaced the dishwasher less than a year ago and the ice maker on the fridge died last year!)

@Foodnerd81: You'll get used to the cast iron stuff. I'm a little on the klutzy side and I haven't cracked/chipped/broken it! You can do it!

@erinbaderin: Thanks for the heads up on the pans! I have a few that would work, but I recently got a set of hand-me-down stainless steel pots that are really nice and I don't want to have to give them up and buy new ones. :(

The pot and pan issue is a pain though.

@honeybear: in reading the responses, if I had to choose I would do an induction cooktop and electric (double) ovens in my dream world.
I'd also look for a range/option that has a lockable oven. My LO is batshit over the oven door. It's scary.

Eta: we didn't have an oven for four months. It wasn't great but totally doable. Wait for those sales, mama!

You don't have gas so this probably won't help, but we have a GE gas range built into our counter and then a GE electric oven installed in the wall. Gas for the range and electric for the oven is a great combo. Our range has 5 burners with two " quick boil" burners.

We have a Samsung induction stove. Pros: it heats up INCREDIBLY fast. Like, it boils water in under a minute. And it's only hot where the pot is touching so little fingers coming over the edge won't get burned if the ring is bigger than the pot. Because of this if a pot boils over it doesn't cook it onto the surface. It also cools down very quickly. Cons: your cookware might not work on it - if magnets don't stick to them they won't work. We had to buy a new wok and nonstick pan. Also all cookware has to have a base of at least 5", so the smallest pot and pan in your set probably will be useless. This made me super annoyed at first but now I've gotten used to it I love the stove.

@honeybear: oh I didn't even think of the super heavy cast iron things! Yikes! And yeah not worth hooking up to gas. We called to see about that and there is a gas line that extends to the corner of our street. We could have it extended for something like ten thousand dollars. Pass, thanks. I hate coils!

@Littlebit7: Thanks! That's good to know about GE. I think the Monograms are all gas, so I can't do those without the extra pain of installing gas, but I'll investigate their other ones.

@Foodnerd81: Nope, no gas. In theory we could bury a container, but I've had a gas range before and I don't really think it's such an improvement over electric that it's worth the effort and expense of doing that.

The smooth cooktop is fine. There's a small learning curve, but you'll get the hang of it quickly. Cleaning it is so much more pleasant than cleaning coils/gas ranges! I feel like it heats up reasonably fast. However, it is sometimes a little scary to wield my really heavy cast iron pans over it. I'm always a little scared that I'll crack it.

Viking. It sucks and I hate it (the oven, the range top works great). Nothing but problems. Came with our rental so not much we can do. Now at it is fixed it is okay but I wouldn't buy one.
My mom has a ge monogram. It's great but they had a lemon at first. Their replacement is 100% awesome.

Do you have gas in the house? I much prefer gas cooktops, although it's a pain to clean. But I like seeing the flame and how much faster it heats up.

Our new house doesn't have gas and has a smooth cooktop. I'm happy it will be easy to clean but my mom has one and it's takes a long time for it to heat up I think. How did you like it until it broke?

Also, how long have you had it? Do you like it?

Background: The oven function on our smooth-surfaced cooktop/oven is dead. I'm going to try to deal without until the Labor Day sales, so I've got a little time to figure this out. Please tell me how much you love yours (or if yours is not so great and I should steer clear) and help me get excited about a new one! Thanks! :)
