since he's a baby, I plan to stick to exclusively organic for his food. I just want to be careful about what I put into his system this first year.

I cut the squash in half, scoop out the seeds, and bake it cut side down until soft.

There were three apple trees when we moved in, then DH planted more apple trees, and pear, fig, cherry, paw paw, peach, plum, and walnut trees, but none of those are old enough to have fruit yet. To make the applesauce I cut up the apples, seeds and skin and all, put it in a pot with a little water and cook til soft. Then I run it through a food mill and add lemon juice, cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves to taste.

@duckduckkristen: I wish I knew butternut squash was a first food! We planted zuchinni but not butternut squash! What did you do with the squash? Did you just leave the seeds?
Can't wait for acorn squash, so sweet. I think I might roast that then puree like we would for ourselves.

And you have a apple tree?? So jealous.
Is there a recipe you follow for apple sauce? Maybe I should take M apple picking if anything for pesticide free apples to make applesauce out of!

We just puréed and froze a lot of butternut squash from our garden and canned some sugar free applesauce from our apple trees!

M is almost 4 months old and I'm starting to puree in season vegetables/fruit that I get from our CSA (community supported agriculture) share. Only 1st foods for now that way I know that they're "fresh", local and pesticide free.
So far I've pureed carrots from our share and will be pureeing and canning yellow peaches from our share as well.

Beyond that though I'm thinking I'll only get organic off the dirty dozen list. Or anything in which the skin stays intact.

What are you doing?
