First trimester. I could not keep my eyes open at work, I fell asleep on the bus and missed my stop repeatedly and generally did nothing but work and sleep... all while acting like nothing was different since I wasn't "out." In the newborn days everyone understood why I was exhausted.

First trimester with an 8month old wins for me, with first tri and no kids, no work coming in second. Newborn sleep both times have been okay, thank god! :)

newborn sleep. it wasn't *that* bad, though. E got onto a schedule in special care and kept it at home. But i didn't have much pregnancy fatigue, either. I napped a lot and DH let me sleep in on weekends, so I never got toooo far behind.

month 4/5 was way worse, though. I know it's not an option, but good lord.

Newborn sleep because you *can* sleep when you really need to during the first trimester. You can get home from work and lie in bed all evening groaning! You can have a lie in at the weekend. If needs be you can call in sick to work but you can't call in sick to your baby - he/she demands your time and attention no matter how exhausted you are.

Pregnancy exhaustion is bad, and even harder with a toddler- but the lack of sleep along with nursing issues and feeling absolutely lost and hopeless and overwhelmed with a newborn wins it for me. Wait, why did I agree to a second kiddo? j/k.... think I'll go cry now ;)

First trimester for sure. I was so exhausted, nauseous, and just overall terrible feeling all throughout my first trimester. That first month with a newborn with no sleep was rough but it doesn't compare to how crappy I felt first trimester.

I have to add, post partum, I felt like I could be an efficient sleeper! While pregnant, I can't sleep and overall, I never feel good. An hour of sleep while not pregnant vs. an hour of sleep while pregnant, is very, very different.

I was just thinking about this - I would say first trimester, though I agree with @MamaMoose: that not ever being able to sleep more than 5 hours max (and it's usually more like 3) takes a serious toll in a different way. But overall I was more tired when I was pregnant.

NB sleep is worse, but I have to say, the first couple of weeks weren't so bad, because I had crazy adrenaline and hormones keeping me going. It was (is) the few months after that wore off that's the worst.

@MamaMoose: I agree about the control. I could go to bed early, sleep in on the weekends... How people have babies back to back is beyond me!

I was actually more exhausted in my third trimester because I had horrible circulation so my arm would fall asleep. Between that and waking up to pee, I was up almost every hour or so from 34 weeks on. By the time LO arrived, I got 3 hours of sleep in a row and I was pumped!

Wow its incredible to see the strong responses on either side! I'm 25 weeks pregnant now so can't answer yet. I will say, although I was exhausted in the first tri, the fact that i wasn't responsible for anyone or anything besides myself and my work made it pretty easy to cope with...
