My mom would stress about having people over and hated drop in visitors because she never felt like things were tidy enough, she was convinced that no one else left their toaster out after using it or ever had mail on their counters or dishes in the sink. I have been a nanny for a long time including for families with a full time housekeeper... Everyone does these things! It was one thing my mom said that she immediately regretted. She was hardcore about following through on whatever she said, which I am infinitely grateful for now, but she said I couldn't go trick or treating unless I finished my dinner. She spent a month sewing beautiful Halloween costumes for me &amp; my brother &amp; it's her favorite holiday, but I wouldn't eat, so I stated home &amp; handed out candy to all the other kids. Even when we lived overseas. My mom was a yeller, she also sometimes threw things when mad (not at us, but still!). They made us sit at the table until we finished our dinner, etc. </p> <p>Halloween always makes me remember one year when I was little that my mom said I couldn't trick or treat until I finished my meat loaf. I sat at that table FOREVER! I was pretty young so I didn't care about trick or treating really. We used to go to other people's houses though. I am exactly the same now I'm an adult and it's because I get anxious about having guests- will they notice if the house isn't spotless? Will it be difficult to get them to leave when we're done? Will they like the food I have prepared? My Sister is the same too, it's so funny. Even though my parents didn't have one, I used to agree with my friends. My current bosses have a cleaning lady and I find myself cleaning before she comes over. I don't want her to think we're slobs ; ) Also, I don't want to make her job any harder than it already is. She is worth her weight in gold if you ask me! </p>
