We started with rice cereal. LO is still a little unsure about banana but loves everything else. We started LO on solids at 4 months and is 8 months now and eats a variety of veggies and fruit as well as toast, chicken, beef and fish.

Sweet potato is a huge hit and as a pp said I think most babies love it, so maybe start with that.

Baby #1, we did rice cereal, oatmeal, peas, avocado, carrots, then, fruits.

Baby #2 I made homemade brown rice cereal (weelicious recipe), bananas, applesauce, avocado... Going to incorporate some baby led weaning soon.

Rice cereal because our doctor recommended it. It actually made our LO pretty sick when he ate it. He would vomit A LOT, so we stopped feeding it to him. Then, we did all veggies for a couple of weeks, then started fruit. He never did, and still doesn't like food very much, and doesn't eat much of it, though.

With baby 1, we did oatmeal (more filling and at the time he was sucking down 40 oz of formula a day!!) With baby 2, I'm just going to go with baby led weaning all the way.

Our ped. said we could try anything really, in no particular order. But I think we'll try cereal, then a veggie. I feel like if she has fruit first she might prefer the sweeter foods.

We went on a shopping trip just like @artbee- it was so fun! I cannot wait to try it. We also bought those fresh feeders (for solids that could pose as a choking risk). I've heard they're great. We're waiting another month though, bummer.

We havent started yet (although we do give little tastes here and there) at 5.5 months, but since Liv is EBF, our practice suggests starting with banana because its closest to breastmilk. She LOVES BANANAS. Veggies arent necessarily better for digestion, its an old thought that babies shouldnt get used to that sweet fruit flavor early or else they wont like vegetables. Except anyone who has tasted breastmilk knows how sweet that is, so that thought has started to fade out.

We did carrots first. But it seems like a lot of babies LOVE sweet potatoes, so that might be a good start (and probably what we'll do first for our next!) We didn't do cereal at all, ever. Our ped told us not to bother, so we didn't.

My daughter wasn't really into food until she was between seven and eight months, though. We first tried at 6 months and she didn't really care about it. So we waited until she was interested and then it was non-stop from there.

Avocado at 6 months. He loved it and I love that it's so healthy and has good fats. Enjoy those early days because at least in our case, my baby was much more open to trying things than he is now at one year.

We got the OK early too, At 5.5 months she's had apple, sweet potato, peas, pear, carrots, apricot and mango. She also eats rice cereal or oatmeal in the morning. We did bananas too, but she had an allergic reaction. She has loved everything so far.

@Rubies: My Pediatrician gave me the okay to give solids at 4.5 months! So early imo. I started M off sometime in her 5th month with puree'd sweet potato (mixed with breastmilk). :)

I did rice cereal with milk mixed in and then we did bananas next. The order I introduced things seems to have had no impact on her food preferences now by the way. I know some people say you should do veggies first but we didn't and my daughter still loves veggies.

Her first taste was an apple, then a bit of plum juice from a plum I was eating, then squished banana. She's just an eater so the most she's ever done is made a silly face when she tries something, but then she always goes back for more. She's had meat and veggies and fruit and cereal at this point (7 months) and pretty much loves everything. The only thing she really wouldn't eat was avocado but now she loves it.

I just started and will blog about it soon! I was so confused, but ultimately it seems like it doesn't matter what you start them with or what order you go in. We've done carrots, bananas, peas, and prunes so far in that order. We skipped the cereal.

@artbee: She LOVED it! She tried to eat my finger! Her expressions are awesome - confusion and delight at the same time :D I'm going to stop giving it to her, though, because like you, I want to wait for her 6-month appointment just to get the all-clear.

How does she like the banana? I'm waiting for her 6 month doctor visit to ask them, but I'm curious to hear the answers. We just did a shopping trip to buy all the things we need for solids (bowls, spoons, etc) and I'm getting super excited!

LO is almost 5.5 months and while we haven't officially started solids, time and again I might offer her some smushed banana on my finger.

I had fully intended on starting her with cereal but have just recently read that starting with a veggie is better (it's to do with digestion). What did you start with?
