@sslm: If it makes you feel any better, during my labor with my second kiddo, one of the nurses said that a fast labor for a second is a reward for a tough first labor. She wasn't wrong at all. By the time that I got into the hospital, I had progressed pretty well that I could have delivered him sooner than I did. The second time around, they delayed his entrance because of the antibiotics and GBS. My first labor was long (14 hours) and full of movement, etc. My second one was practically ignored while they waited until the meds took hold. Once I reached 4 hours after getting antibiotics, they delivered him. By that point, he had already pushed out his bag of waters and was putting so much pressure on that he was ready to go.

I opened this thread planning to contribute and then realized it was a terrible idea to read all of these responses while pregnant!! It totally freaked me out!!

That said, for LO1 it was the pushing. I do not know wtf people are talking about when they say that was some sort of relief. It was excruciating and way worse than contractions for me.

Contractions. With both of my kids, my labors started with contractions. They're hard to forget when you have to wait hours for an epidural. Also, peeing after labor and delivery is pretty painful. It's worse when you can't and have to be catheterized as a result.

@jlm22: for what it's worth, as bad as the pain of labor was, it was gone pretty much as soon as baby was delivered! My second is due in March, and I'm definitely planning to go sans meds again. But, if there's one thing I learned the first time around, it's that birth hurts, and I will never judge anyone again for their decisions when it comes to handling it!!

Contractions were the worst for me. They started hard and fast after my water broke and kept coming like that for five hours. I actually felt like I got a break when I was pushing (not WHILE pushing) because I had the longest break in between contractions that I had during the entire labor. I hadn't gone to sleep (water broke right as I'd been getting into bed) and so I was actually dozing off in between pushing contractions.

Is it bad that I don't remember anything being bad. My water broke, contractions weren't that bad when I got my epidural, but I wa shaking so hard/bad/cold that I got it. So I don't even remember what contractions felt like. I didn't feel anything pushing and I don't remember recovery being that bad.

@lawbee11: oh gosh, that was horrible, too. The midwife kept twirling the cord and massaging my uterus to get it to come out, and I wanted to throw up. I thought that was supposed to be the easy part!

DS - Absolutely pitocin contractions!!

DD - The five tries to get an IV placed hurt only slightly less than the ring of fire. Just kidding, that was terrible.

The contractions were definitely the worst part for me...

But there was a moment after the nurse inserted the IV when she squeezed the IV bag really hard and intense pain shot down to the insertion area. Idk why she did that, but it hurt so much I yelled at her... This was before my epidural, so I was definitely not in the nicest frame of mind either :silly:

the intense contractions with LO1 - my labor was so intense and fast, and they were on top of one another. I got the epi at 10 cm. ha.

with LO2, honestly the worst was getting the epidural (and that wasn't even bad). the most painful, for me, was the emotional pain when they whisked LO out of the room because she had meconium in her fluid and they couldn't get her to cry. and no one updated me. :(

My back hurt really bad for 2 days after from the epidural, like one big bruise and it rubbed every time I got in and out of bed at the hospital. I had plenty of pain meds during labor so the contractions were never that bad! I did have antibiotics given due to being strep positive and they were cold so they hurt flowing in and made me shiver. When they went to do the 2nd dose and I said how much it bothered me being cold the nurse said they could just let them come up to room temperature before giving them to me. Not sure why the first nurse didn't do that!!
