@SweetiePie: DS turns 3 next month. We transitioned to a full mattress on the floor a few weeks ago because he was having super-early (like 3am) wakeups, and he was too big to sleep in my lap in the glider....my back was killing me and none of us were sleeping. The switch was 100% for momma.
It has been hit or miss....he loves the new bed, but the full is so much bigger that he seems to get overwhelmed and have trouble actually falling asleep in in. So we converted his crib, and he is ROCKING it! Every night, he gets to choose "big bed or little bed". He mostly chooses little bed, but I like having the big mattress for cuddles and stories and the occasional super-early wakeup.

We waited until after the arrival of the new baby. We did it right after Christmas when he was almost 3.5. He slept so well, so why mess with a good thing?!

@jhd: This is my original thread and my son is one month from turning 3 (tomorrow) and still haven't transitioned to a bed! I'm not too nervous for the reason @Mrs. Blue: stated - he's older and loves sleep so I kinda think it won't be an issue. I've kept him as long as possible but it's getting really really hard for me to get him in and out. And I'm sure it'll only get harder as this pregnancy progresses! So I'm thinking it's in the next couple of months.
At first I was gonna go straight for the full sized bed and put up mesh rails (to reduce transitions from bed to toddler to full), but now for sake of immediate ease, I think I'll just do the toddler bed. I'm too lazy to think about getting a full sized mattress and sheets and bedding right now. Haha. Maybe when the 1st tri is done kicking my ass it won't seem so daunting.

@bluestriped bee: We didn't transition them until they were a few months shy of 3, and it was completely not a big deal. I had it built up so much in my head, but I think because they were pretty old, they understood what the beds were for and they mostly stayed in them. We did out long rails up, but I don't think that had much to do with it. With twins (actually any kid), I'm a big fan of leaving them in as long as possible, unless there is some major safety issue.

@erinbaderin: I consider converting the crib because I have to stick my hand in between the slats and I think it might be easier to lay in between their beds at night to get them to sleep. But I have twins that currently have never tried to climb out and so the thought of two of them loose in their room makes me think bedtime will be even worse.

@Mrs. Blue: How was it transitioning to toddler beds with twins? I'm afraid one or both won't stay in their beds or will wake the other. I don't have climbers so the crib is containing them until we get them.

New baby was coming. In hindsight since he still liked the bed we maybe should have left him in it for longer since the baby slept in a bassinet for a while. Once the crib went, so did naps, so we should have held out a bit longer.

I can't believe how few of you have climbers although my LO is 90% for height so she has an advantage. Once she learned to get out though, she absolutely wouldn't stay in. The transition was fairly easy though. Took a few days for her to learn to stay in bed and go to sleep.

Climber here. DH was actually in the bathroom while LO1 was supposed to be sleeping. He was washing his face, turned around and LO1 scared the crap out of him by standing in the doorway asking him what he was doing. We took the front of the crib off at 2 years 3 months!

@mamag @adira were you able to successfully night potty train by transitioning to bed? DD is just 2 and pretty much day trained but wears a diaper at night in her crib. Reading the other thread re: night potty training freaked me out that she would be in diapers for 2 more years if we let it be. Did you teach your LOs to get up and pee in the MOTN?

They were consistently climbing in and out, so we decided we needed to before someone got hurt. I'm a big fan of leaving them in until you have to for whatever reason, though, so I say embrace that sweet containment!

For what it's worth, the twins were between 2 1/2 and 3 when we moved them to regular beds and the transition was SO smooth. I think because they were older we didn't have many problems with them getting out of bed. They seemed to be able to grasp the concept of what bed was for and it was no big deal. I had been dreading it forever, so that was a welcome relief.

At 2y4m we haven't transitioned yet, and I'm REALLY trying not to do it until after we move in June. Right now, the only reason we'd transition is if 1) he starts climbing out or 2) he potty trains and need access to the bathroom (don't see that happening anytime soon!)

Potty training! We actually didn't transition Xander from crib to bed until he was 3.5, even though we started potty training at 2.5. As he's gotten older and able to go longer overnight without peeing in his pull-up, we were having to get up and go get him so he could go potty. Finally we got sick of it and transitioned him to a toddler bed so he could go himself.

We moved him as late as we could stand it. He was over 3.5 years old, never tried to climb out, and loved sleeping in his crib. It was just kind of silly having such a big kid in a crib, so we made the change to a toddler bed (with no issues at all, he still kind of treats it like a crib and calls for us). I'm glad we waited, actually! Now with #2 on the way, he's in a twin bed and transitioned easily from the toddler bed to the twin bed.

We were having a lot of trouble getting to go to sleep. It was taking longer and longer and I was spending all sorts of time laying next to the crib singing and whatnot. A few of the moms in my birth month had done it early with success and encouraged me to also. So at 20 months we took the side off the crib and put on the little toddler rail.

It didn't do much for bedtime, but the transition was seamless. He treated it like a crib. I've found with him if we do big transitions early then he doesn't get too attached to whatever is. Like bottles or the crib.

I haven't yet but my motivation will be to use her crib for baby #2 due this summer and also just hoping she will sleep through the night.

My son was losing his cool every night over bedtime and nothing helped until he asked to sleep on his pillow (it's a floor pillow in his room). He did great, and we converted the next day -- solved all of our bedtime problems, at least at the time.
