@Foodnerd81: haha - to each their own! I loved having all our family in the waiting room with DD and hearing their screams when Dh brought out the pink onesie. But I'm pretty lucky to have good respectful parents and ILs :silly:

@Charm54: ha- my friend is actually having her Inlaws watch her son in part so they specifically can't camp out and wait in the waiting room. She really didn't want anyone there when she had her first and they insisted on coming to the hospital before he was born anyway (from 5 hours away). This time they won't commit to leaving as soon as they can after she goes into labor- but at least they can't come to the hospital.

My aunt , so that my parents and ILs can come to the hospital to be in the waiting room for the news. Once baby is here she will stay with my ILs and parents while we are in the hospital

My plan was my parents, who live in town. They both have a lot of autonomy in their work, though my dad is often really busy and/or traveling. But there was very little my mom couldn't drop at the last minute. They left their phones on for about a month before my due date, but backup plan was to call my. Either (who lives with them, and is attached to his phone). They also live only 7 minutes away, so in the event of was nighttime and they couldn't be reached, we could have driven LO1 over there on the way to the hospital.

Ugh we don't have one yet. Guess we better figure out by April! Probably friends/neighbors for a few hours and MIL or my mom taking over once they can get here, but they are all several hours away.

@Foodnerd81: calling MIL is the plan. BIL lives with her so if she doesn't pick up we will probably call him. She's going to come to us, it's easier to watch lo here. Also she only works part time, a few hours a week, scheduling appointments on her own schedule and working from home otherwise, so the schedule is no big deal.

We have a variety of plans, based on what day this baby decides to arrive. My MIL is only available on certain days, so for the other days we have at least two friends available (depending on day/time needed). My mom will be in town as of my due date, so she's on call at that point (if the baby waits that long). And we have several friends nearby that we could call in a pinch of everything else fell through. The older child care situation was my biggest worry for a while, but then everyone jumped in and now we have more help offered than we need! I feel very lucky.

My mom lives an hour away if there's no traffic. Our plan was to call her if it looked like labor was imminent. If everything happened too fast or if she wasn't going to make it in time we would take lo1 to the hospital with us. DH would stay with him until my mom arrived. The second part of our plan was the midwife's suggestion and though not ideal a good plan!
What actually happened was I started having contractions on my due date but not painful and far apart so we took that as our warning sign and my mom came up that night after rush hour. Lo2 was born the next afternoon.

We moved across the country at 32 weeks. If I'd gone into labor before that, we didn't really have a plan. We moved to about 25 miles from my parents though, so we planned for them to care for DD1. I installed a car seat in my mom's car, packed a little suitcase for DD1 and wrote directions and a grab list (for myself of last minute things for her that we couldn't go without while waiting - lovey, coat, etc.) My sister lived a mile away, so the plan was to call her and have her come sit with DD while my mom was en route. She slept through my call, but my mom rushed over. Our plan had it been my sister was that we would take her car to the hospital and she would keep ours with DD's seat. When they came to visit us at the hospital, DH would switch the seat and swap back cars.

Depending on when it happened, we were either going to drop K at MIL's house on the way to the hospital, or have my mom come to our house to watch her.
As it turns out, last night she was sleeping over at MIL's just for fun...and now I'm in labour haha! So she'll just stay there.

We had tons of back up. We have no family nearby and I went into labor early (shocker! lol). The main person was my BFF and we had a car seat that we gave her. I had LOs bag packed so the minute my water broke, we called our doctor and then my friend. If my friend had not been available we had neighbors that could have come over and watched him until my BFF could get him. I also called my parents and they drove from Savannah to DC as soon as they heard I was in labor. They picked him up from my BFF and watched him the rest of the time we were in the hospital.

However..... next time, my parents will be closer, they are moving to VA and the drive to our house is 2 hours, so we will probably have a friend watch them at our house until my parents arrive.

@Foodnerd81: could you switch cars with BIL? Then he could have your car and car seat and you could have his, then switch back when it is time to come home? We do this with MIL when she takes LO for the day and I don't want to deal with the installation.

As far as what we did with LO, we have no family local but do have MIL 2 hours away. So I had several friends in town who agreed to be "on call" with the idea that we would call them initially to take LO until MIL could come down. They let me know days they were not available. My water broke on a Saturday morning so I texted them around 7 and one was able to come by 8:45. My MIL then arrived by noon. It will work out--good luck!

@blackbird: I don't know that our local station really does that? Especially last minute. But since the seat is in our car, I don't think it will be an issue. They can just stay local until baby is born and then DH can drive over and move the seat if need be. I guess.

My parents are 40 minutes away so that is the plan. However, if it happens too fast my brother and SIL are just a few minutes away so they could run over until my parents get here. They all answer phones at night so that shouldn't be a problem. We called my parents at 2am when I went into labor with DS1 and they came down right away. ( to come to hospital and watch dog). Eta: my parents already have a car seat for him installed

@blackbird: we don't have a second car seat, and I don't actually trust anyone besides DH and me to install it, but luckily we live in the city and don't need it for every day anyway. Well, I'm sure my sahm friend could do it too. I guess I mean I don't trust my BIL or his girlfriend since they have never done a car seat. :)

We had a few options. Call MIL was the main one. Also, my friends with kids all offered to come help (DH had some work travel at 37 weeks) or take me to the hospital, and our neighbor offered to help any time, even in the middle of the night, if we wanted them to wait in the house for MIL to come. I ended up being induced midday, unexpectedly, so I called Daycare and ran E's overnight bag there, then called MIL and had her install her seat and pick up E from daycare. Then DH came home and we went to the hospital together

@lamariniere: yeah I plan to have a bag packed and have all her info written out in a few places (schedules, things she is sure to eat, activities, how to set up the dvr and watch Daniel tiger...) and make sure to include spare keys to our condo even though BIL has them.

We have no family nearby and didn't have many close friends as we had only been living here for a year when LO2 was due. I asked around and found 3 different people to be "on call" to take care of DS. One was my neighbor, one was a friend with a child close in age to LO1 and one was the cleaning lady. Luckily, my water broke in the afternoon on a Saturday, so it was easy to get in touch with the friend. My DH took LO1 by taxi to the friend's house and then joined me at the hospital (I went by ambulance since it's standard protocol here). Be sure to have a bag packed for C in the weeks before you are due so it will be easier to drop her off if you have to take her somewhere.

For your second and beyond births, what was the plan for your older children? Not just who, but how did you plan to get in touch with them, especially if it was middle of the night or something? Same person for day or night? Did you have multiple plans?

I still have a few months, and my BIL lives nearby and has said he will take care of C and should be able to "work from home" while we are at the hospital (due near Christmas so shouldn't be busy). And I have a sahm friend who is also willing to help, but she always turns her phone off at night. She's willing to leave it on around my due date but could forget.

Just wondering if people just have one plan, back ups in place, or what. Really I am trying not to worry too much since who knows what will happen and when I'll go into labor anyway! Hopefully on a weekend when everyone is home!
