I just gave birth on Tuesday night with an epi and the experience was great. I used an IV narcotic drug as long as I could and then we switched to the epi. I was terrified about how much it would hurt but it didn't hurt that much at all-maybe the IV drugs helped some? I felt no pain and had a button to push to receive an extra dose to the epi when I felt the need in addition to the constant flow I was already receiving. I delivered at a hospital with a dedicated L&D anesthesiologist so they had more pain relief options available to use and I think a more experienced staff with epi's. My left leg was more numb than my right one and I had one small spot on my right side on the belly that hurt some but it was bearable. Would definitely get one again!

Maybe it's the amount of pitocin I was on but I felt like my epidural kept wearing off after a couple of hours and I would be begging for more. The cycle repeated itself over and over during my 32 hour labor. I still feel like I felt everything...especially at the end. Not sure if it was placed badly or what. I know the nurses were being conservative with it because they wanted me to be able to feel enough to know when to push but I was stalled at an 8 for at least 8 hours and then stalled at a 9. I definitely felt "enough." :bummed: I was expecting the epidural to be this magical thing and it just wasnt.

I got sadol sp?!? Before because the anestegiologist was in surgery and I needed something bad at that point!
That took the edge off of getting that needle in my back!
The epidural worked great it did feel as if it was wearing off closer to pushing, but my midwife assured me it was OK!
I could feel the contractions and could definitely feel the pushing, but it helped I am sure!

Mine was fantastic. I was induced and they let me get it really early on because the pitocin contractions were brutal and all in my back. I felt nothing until I was about 9cm, then started feeling pressure during contractions. I tried to up my dose with the little button, but it didn't do anything. I definitely felt a strong urge to push when I hit 10cm, and then felt intense pressure while pushing, but luckily he was out in 20 minutes. I did feel them stitching me up, which kind of sucked - they were not gentle about it.

Oh the epidural was soooo wonderful. I had been having timeable contractions for 20 hours before I got it and it allowed me to rest before time to push. However, LO was sunny side up once she descended and was hitting a nerve in my hip. The epidural did not touch that so I was still at a 10 pain level. I didn't feel any pain from contractions or my 2nd degree tear, though.

I didn't want to get one but I was pleasantly surprised. I had a very fast labor (well, for a 1st baby - woke up with mild ctx at 6:30, at hospital at 8:30am, baby born 1pm) and my contractions were on top of each other with no break and I gave in. I was worried my BP would get low, I would feel crappy, my legs would be numb and I couldn't push, etc.

I had to have a bag of fluid before they would give it, that was fine. The actual getting it was fine, maybe like a bee sting. My butt got really warm, lol. But it was stronger on one side than the other, the nurses kept having me roll to try to get the medicine to "spread" more to the other side. And I had a spot by my left hip where it didn't really work and that kept hurting pretty bad.

Overall I had a "weaker" epidural which I was happy with. My legs were not numb at all, I could move them. But I definitely still had some discomfort and could definitely feel my contractions but it was manageable. Felt a LOT of pressure and some pain with pushing, no worries about not being able to feel anything! I remember crying "I need him out, I need him out" because it was still hurting. BUT I cannot imagine how much worse it would have been without!

I had a huge episiotomy that I didn't feel and I didn't feel being stitched up afterward, so that was awesome.

Overall I was super happy and would get it again!

With number one they threatened not to let me have it because my white cell count was high but they did it anyway around 5cm and it was heaven. Worked like a charm and I never felt a thing after it was placed.

#2 came extremely fast and I was screaming bloody murder that I wanted an epidural. I got it after I was 10cm and already pushing (not voluntarily!) it was amazing and I don't regret it a bit.

Mine was amazing. I felt 3 contractions and I was like "that's it, epidural time". The doc was up in 5 min and I was happy as a clam right after. The pressure from the needle was weird and uncomfortable. No pain during the entire birth (except pressure in my face of all places! Ha). Actually I didn't feel much of anything which I was A ok with. No regrets. Wouldn't change a thing (except I'd eat more prior to going in if I have to be induced again, I was sooooo hungry)

So my epidural was great, but I'll say that I had hardly no pain before the epidural was placed when I was 6cm. Since I was pregnant with twins, I wanted to make sure I was conscious for the birth of my twins. The rate of c-section was higher with twins and if I missed the window to get the epidural and needed a c-section that I might need to be put under by General anesthesia. I didn't want that.
So I'll say that I had an overall good experience with labor and epidural because I had hardly no pain before.
I am curious if I have another LO, how my pain will be.
Oh, I ended up with a failed induction and had a c-section because with continued increases of pitocin, I still did not progress past 6cm. Dr thpight I had an infection that was not caught or my uterus was simply tired because my water broke 6 weeks earlier.

@wrkbrk: Before I was induced, I read about Epidurals and was so confused at the thought of Epidurals not working. I think I heard fading, wearing off and failing.

This response from an anesthesiologist (check 3rd or 4th comment) helped me understand how this could happen.

my epidural sucked.... I got it about 2 hours after being put on the drip as labour had stalled (12 hours in) and it numbed only up to my hips. I could feel every contraction, but couldn't feel anything else and was unable to push effectively. It wore off soon after baby was born, and OB had to give me a shot while he was stitching me up.

@wrkbrk: Sometimes the epi isn't hooked up directly to the IV, giving the continuous flow. For example, with mine the nurses were injecting medication directly into the line that was taped to my shoulder. I think it was because it was a bit quick between the epi being put in and me needing to push? No idea, but it annoyed me!

I got an epidural and that was great but I lost the ability to flex my toes on one leg for a good couple of weeks after, which meant I walked with a limp. I have never heard of this happening to anyone else so I don't know if it was a fluke or what.

Awesome--especially for not having wanted one at all before going into labor! I think about 12hr after my water broke I finally asked for the epi since 2 IV doses of pain meds didn't touch the pain I was feeling. I felt like it was all in my back & that I would have trouble pushing without getting it. Turns out that was good thinking, because I didn't deliver for another 10-11hrs, and had a PERFECT epi where I could support my weight & lift my hips up, but felt no pain. I had control of the button & got another "push" of drugs as I started to feel pain again, which was half or less than their set max hourly dose allowed by the machine administering the doses. I stopped pushing my button when I was fully dilated & got to push, so probably 1 hr before LO was born & that seemed to work well enough to have enough feeling to feel effective on pushing, but not miserable. I did feel the stitches they placed, which was not exactly fun, but was over reasonably quickly.

Brilliant. Absolutely brilliant! With DD1 it was the dream epi and took every last bit of feeling away, but I was still able to push DD out within an hour without feeling the slightest bit of pain or pressure.

With DD2, it didn't work quite as well - it took about 90% of the pain away but I just felt achy and couldn't get comfortable. Still didn't feel any of the pain of pushing and DD was born quite quickly so it was good overall.

Hoping for a repeat of the experience with DD1 when I have this next baby!

Mine was beautiful. I am allergic to a lot of pain killers so they were hesitant to give me an epi to begin with but they allowed one with fentynal. My only issue is that the freezing was wearing off on my left side quickly. I was not able to hold my own legs as I pushed. I could feel the contractions and was able to push but I could not support myself at all on the right side.

Hellish. A resident did it and she was just awful, so it hurt terribly. Then I just absolutely hated the way it made me feel. I couldn't take the pain of the pitocin contractions, but beside that going away, it was miserable. It really doubled my desire to finally have a natural birth the second time, and as hard as that was, I'd much sooner do that again than have another epidural.

It was amazing. I was so pissed that they wouldn't give it to me for LO2! I refused to push because I wanted them to give me the epidural first but they wouldn't :silly:

I had a long induction with LO1 and the epidural was great initially but then shifted some and was no longer working. A nurse from anesthesiology came and pushed a bolus through it to see if it was out of place or just required more meds, the bolus did nothing so she said the anesthesiologist would need to come replace it. Unfortunately there were c-sections going on and he never got back so I got to finish dilating and push naturally.
