I had it my first year of college. I also didn't take any time off to get better - I think I missed one class before I was diagnosed - but basically did nothing besides go to class and stay in my room resting or doing homework. I don't think quite realized how sick I was, but I'd lost like 15lbs by summer when I came home from school, which is pretty dramatic weight loss for me. I don't think I really realized how sick I was or for how long, since I was still managing to do the things I was "supposed" to do. Not sure how long it lasted this many years later, but it seems like it was most of a semester for me.

@petitenoisette: yes, I am thinking about it. Today is actually fine because half the schools is gone on a field trip, so I am literally sitting in a silent empty library and have an entire day to just check in and reshelve some books (and I have some student helpers coming later to do the reshelving). So I'm taking it really easy today.

Tomorrow, I will see how it goes when I actually have some classes to teach. If it's bad, then I'll consider medical leave for the rest of the school year. By then, it will only be 1.5 weeks left.

@Anagram: Please please go out on medical leave. That is what is for. I am a teacher so I understand the complicated emotions that can go into having to be out, but especially at this time of the year the kids won't miss you too much
It sounds like you desperately need some rest and maybe also a kick in the pants that it is OK to take care of yourself. You have mono!!! Of course you are tired!

@Anagram: I think with mono, it's definitely possible. Can you take the rest of the week off and just rest?

So I ended up telling my husband that I was sorry, but I just couldn't be a mom last night. So he either needed to find me another sitter (since our nanny couldn't stay) or come home reallllly early.

So he ended up telling his boss it was an emergency and he was home by 5 (unheard of, because he's never home before 7-8 and he was supposed to work even later). So I was asleep by 5:30 and slept straight till 2:30 am--woke up dying of itching and hungry, so I applied more itch creams, ate a banana, and went back to sleep till 6 am.

BUT I'M STILL TIRED. How is that possible? I'm not just tired, I feel like my limbs are heavy and my body is achy. Is that all typical?

@Anagram: I'm sorry you are so unwell. Would it be possible to take some sick time and get some rest at least the rest of this week? I got mono a few months before I got pregnant with me LO. I was a full time teacher at the time but no LOs yet and it completely wiped me out. I took the rest of the week off after it was diagnosed and tried to return to work the next week. I felt so awful and my principal at the time had recently had an adult child go through mono so he knew how rough it can be. He encouraged me to take another week off and recover. If I were you I would try to get some time off so you can get well and enjoy the summer with your kids. That said I know how hard it is to have enough time off etc. Mono basically wiped out all time I had saved up and I had none left for my Mat leave! :bummed:

I had mono on January and February and it was a good six weeks before I had any energy. It was so hard being SAHM to three little kids.
Hang in there.

I had mono in high school and was out of school for 6 weeks. My days were spent laying in bed or on the couch. I lost 20lbs and tons of muscle strength.
I think once I started back in to school I did half days for a few weeks and exercise was a gradual process.
I can't imagine being in your shoes and having it now:(. You need to get as much rest as possible. Hope you start getting some soon.

I had mono in college and it was really bad for the first 2-3 weeks. Every cold after that for like another year or two wiped me out. With my mono I didn't have the stinky breath/ issue eating symptom although I was too tired to eat.

I had it my senior year in high school and missed an entire quarter - so 2.5 months out of school completely, and then I could only go back to school half days for the following term. Granted I was a senior so I definitely milked the half day thing for longer than needed but I was super tired for a long long time.

I had it in college, and it went undiagnosed for a long time (probably 6-8 weeks?). I was probably in and out of health services on campus for a full month before they ran the mono test.

It came back negative. It wasn't until I went home for Thanksgiving and went to my family doctor that they thought to test for Epstein Barr (the virus that causes mono), and sure enough, it was positive. And by that point, I'd also developed one of the nastiest sinus infections the doctor had ever seen. It was visible as soon as I opened my mouth to say "ahhh"

Once they discovered that and treated the sinus infection, I felt mostly better, but was generally wiped out for the rest of the semester. Thankfully I was a college kid and could just sleep between classes, but I took a TON of naps.

@avivoca: well, the doctors seem to think it's likely that the rash was initially from mono, because I also had strep and went to urgent care (the mono was not yet diagnosed) and he gave me amoxicillin, which apparently causes a rash if given to mono patients.

Except. Usually the mono/amoxicillin rash lasts 1-2 weeks. And it's been more than 8 weeks for me and it's still spreading and getting worse. It's really, really bad now--from my face to my toes.

I'm still at work. I only have 2 weeks left of school, but I'm quickly running out of steam and not sure I'm going to make it till the end. Thinking about asking for medical leave of some sort---I have tons of doctors that could write notes detailing all my many current issues. But...it almost seems like more paperwork and hassle than just showing up and barely working? Which is what I'm doing now. I don't know.

My husband also just called and said he forgot he has a "really important" dinner tonight with his team and asked if I mind if I have to do dinner/bath/bedtime by myself tonight. Sigh.

I had mono MANY MANY years ago in high school. It happened to be school vacation week, but I also took another week off (for a total of two weeks). I still remember when I went back (the third week) I went to the nurses midday to lay down and rest instead of lunch.

@Anagram: My husband had mono when we were in college and it was closer to two months for him, but he is diabetic. Also, I wonder if your rash is related to the mono? He had a horrible rash when he had it that was quite itchy.

I've had mono for a while (along with several other illnesses simultaneously), and my general tiredness just seems to be getting worse. I can barely sit in a chair today at work--like I just want to be laying.

What was your timeline like with Mono? I should be about finished, if it's 4-6 weeks typically. FWIW--I probably have not rested enough (let's be real--or at all). I have still been going to work every day and still momming to 2 kids every day. But I am just really feeling unwell today.

Is that normal? For some regression later on?
