My DH and I went to college together, and I couldn't tell if he was interested. I had a sorority formal coming up and I knew he owned a tux, so I decided to be all casual about it. Me: Hey, so our formal is coming up and our dates have to wear tuxes. And you own a tux... Him: Yeah, but I don't like for people to borrow it. Me: Um... I wanted you to wear it. And be my date. Him: Oh, ok. I spent that whole formal looking for signs of interest, which he waited to express until he was driving home and asked me on a proper date. The first time around, I actually don't remember our first real date. We sort of started after a mutual friend told him I had a crush on him and then he came to my locker one day after school to ask if I'd be his girlfriend. Haha thinking back to this makes me laugh cause its such a high school move!!! The second time around, I hadn't really seen seen him since we broke up - our high school had 5000 students and 10 floors, so you can actually avoid someone if you wanted to. One day I was early walking to English class and ran into him. He was taller and cuter than I had remembered, and we were both shocked to see each other. We exchanged quick awkward hello then parted ways. I started heading to English class early every day to try and run into him (DH later told me he did the same!). After over a month of "accidentally" running into gin, he finally asked me to a movie on Christmas Eve. So for our first date, we watched Green Mile then he walked me to where I was meeting some friends. He didn't call me again for a few days, so I thought it was over. Then the day before NYE he called and invited me to a NYE party at his house (his parents were out of the country on a trip). How cute. DH and I met on eHarmony after both of us joined on a whim after Christmas. I was on for 2 weeks and he was only on for 1 before we got matched up! I saw his picture (him wearing this awful wide-brimmed hat and massive backpack with the Grand Canyon in the background) and I thought, this guy is NOT for me. He likes to go camping so much, its his profile pic! No way, lol. But he ended up messaging me and I reluctantly responded and we ended up emailing back and for for a week or so until we finally agreed to meet up! He suggested the state capitol building (he used to be a tour guide there in college) and I thought it was really unique, so I agreed. He showed me around and talked about all the history and stuff and all the "secret" places and weird stories about the building which was fun. We walked around downtown for a while, he bought a hat and we went out to dinner. We didn't want to part ways after dinner, so we ended up going back to my apartment and it was so awkward because I wanted him to kiss me and he wouldn't do it! I was leaving everything open for him to move in. I was even thinking "just kiss me already!" I finally got so fed up that I kissed him instead. :) I walked him out to his truck and we ended up making out for a while, haha. But a few weeks into our relationship, he took me on a really fun day trip to a nearby city. We went to a Obama rally (we were really political at the time haha), went to the zoo, went shopping and then went to dinner. We told each other we loved each other after! Our first date back in 2004 was to a byob sushi place on the UES. I remember we were so poor (22 and fresh out of school) and DH bought an 'expensive' $10 magnum of wine and we shared an entree. I was super nervous around him because I was so infatuated. The date went alright, but isn't really special to me since back then he wasn't interested in a relationship and the tryst ended in heartache (for me). Fast forward to 2007, he reconnected with me through a mutual friend and asked to meet up to 'discuss business' (we work in the same industry). He was smart to approach it this way since I was so hurt from our past, I wouldn't have met up with him if I thought it was a date. I was nervous about seeing him again, but I eventually relaxed since he really did make it seem like it was a business meeting and our mutual friend was there. I admitted casually that I had just started dating someone which I later learned infuriated him and sparked him to move quickly with me. I was actually surprised when he emailed me two days later and asked me to meet up for a drink after work - alone. But at that point I felt like i had nothing to lose since he knew I was dating someone else (not seriously) and he was doing all the chasing, not me. So I agreed to meet up, but intentionally watched my alcohol intake closely so I didn't get even tipsy which dismayed him even more. We had a great time and he was finally the guy I wanted him to be, asking me out on the next date while still on our current date, calling every day, etc. I immediately broke it off with the other guy, but didn't tell DH that for a good month. We were friends in high school, went to different colleges, and then reconnected via email and phone calls after not seeing each other for several years. At that point, I lived in Arizona and he lived in Washington. He came to visit me over spring break and then I moved to Washington that summer. So, we went from long distance to living together overnight. We're both so glad we re-found each other, but we wish we could have had a more typical dating period. About 5 minutes in, it was clearly a date. We stayed until the bar closed at 1, then went walking around town, then went back to his place and watched movies/talked until the early morning then crashed for a few hours and went to breakfast. We were basically inseparable after that, and I knew midway through that first date that he was the one – even though neither of us were looking for a relationship at that time, and were just looking to have some fun. I was a resident in child oncology and shaved my long hair for the event and also to bond with my little patients. He was there presenting a check and came up to me after my shave to say I looked just as beautiful with a shaved head as I did with long hair :) Smooth! To me I didnt think of it as a first date and I really did not want to go. He had tickets to a concert and the person he was going with last min could not go so he asked me. I felt bad for him and he was not going to go by himself. So told him call me if he absolutley cant find someone. So he calls me and tells me he cant find anyone else to go. Well that night I enjoyed my time with him and finally saw him as more than a friend. So over all it was a good thing. But he eventually told me after dating for some time that he never asked anyone else if they could go. After I said I would if no one else could he just waited and then told he he "could not" find anyong.
