@marionberry: Glad you had a great first visit! I always loved hearing the little heartbeat at the beginning of the appointment. I felt like I could relax after that. :)

Well I had my first appointment yesterday. It entailed peering in a cup, breast exam, vaginal exam, Doppler to hear the heartbeat, bloodwork, and a discussion of medical history and decisions about Down syndrome screening. All in all very easy. I go back in a month but they didn't warn me what that would entail. Assuming more of the same.

I chose a midwife at a freestanding birth center, and my first appointment was a lot of talking and asking questions, for over an hour. I had a blood draw, BP check, weigh in, and urine test for protein and sugar
I chose to decline an ultrasound or doppler until the second trimester, and they didn't ask to do a cervical check but if they had I would have declined that too.

~My first appointment was at 6 weeks. They did a pregnancy test, took a bunch of blood, and the doctor checked how my cervix was looking (making sure it was closed).
~Ultrasound at 8-9 weeks, I lucked out and it was a tummy one. Meet with the OB nurse to go over history, and gave more blood.

I had a midwife appt at 6 weeks. I had a ton of history and bloodwork. But I didn't even have to take my pants off! They did doppler to hear the heartbeat and a pelvic at my 11 w appointment.

Our first official appointment was a transvaginal
Ultrasound w/ heartbeat, Pap smear, history and blood work order. Before that we had emergency appointments due to early bleeding. My first official appointment was at 6 weeks.

My first real appointment was at 11w4d. I had a pap smear done and a vaginal ultrasound. I also had an appt a few weeks before that but I didn't even see the doctor. It was all paperwork.

It was at 8wks and just paperwork, no bloods or u/s. We don't get an u/s here until 12wks so being impatient we booked a private u/s at 9wks.

Also, at the u/s they asked me to come in with a full bladder, but I cheated and drank only half the amount, half the time before. It was still good. At my 12wk one they say I don't need a full bladder.

Mine did bloodwork, urine samples, weigh in, a pap, vaginal exam, Sono for dating purposes and to measure the heartbeat, and a breast exam as well as a full medical history and signing some paperwork. Oh! And a flu shot. It was a full day!

@marionberry: I'm sure your OB can give you some great advice on whether or not the scan/blood work will benefit you. If you decide to do it, you can always go back! I think they do them up until 13 weeks. The results wouldn't have changed out minds either way -- I wanted it mostly because I just wanted another excuse to see my baby. I was obsessed with ultrasounds. haha :)

As far as the ultrasounds go, my tech told me that a full bladder is not necessary & it can sometimes get in the way. I actually peed right before all of my ultrasounds, so never had a full bladder. Plus, they will make you pee at the beginning of all of your appointments to test your urine.

@googly-eyes: This makes me wonder if I should have a full bladder when I get there. Maybe I should call and check? Although since pregnancy, my bladder is often full or can be filled in minutes, so maybe not as much of a worry.

Paperwork, ultrasound (about 6-7 weeks along), urine, blood, pregnancy and hospital informaiton.

At 11 weeks we heard the heartbeat on the doppler! :)

@photojane: I'm really not sure, as the receptionist didn't say anything about what to expect, but DH and I are leaning toward skipping the NT scan and bloodwork. I was hoping maybe my OB could give us some personal reasons for or against to help us make that decision at our appointment.

We went at 8 weeks, and we had a dating scan, and then sat down with one of the docs for a brief chat. She went over our family health history and any risk factors, plus things to do and avoid. We asked her a few questions too. They gave us a little goodie bag, and some vitamin samples. It was pretty basic, but exciting. Have fun!! :)

ETA: We went at 11.5 weeks for our NT scan & blood work. Will they be doing that at this appointment?

My appointment was at 7 weeks (I believe!) My OB just went over my history, and answered any general questions about pregnancy. He also talked to me a lot about what to avoid and what vitamins to take, etc. I got a flu shot at that visit. They also gave me a little gift bag!

I believe he also did a cervical check, but I was having spotting, so it probably related to that. I believe I did blood work closer to 12 weeks... first trimester screen.

So far I've been to my RE twice since pregnancy, but on Thursday I go to the OB for my first pregnancy appointment (at 11 weeks). Just curious as to what to expect. All we ever did at the RE's office was an ultrasound each time..no blood, labs, exams, etc.

What did your first OB appointment entail?
