The first month was awful. She slept okay at night but hardly slept during the day. We had a ton of feeding issues and she cried for hours every day and wouldn't be comforted. Month 2 was a little better. Month 3 was pretty stellar... she was still sleeping well at night, was napping well during the day, eating was still challenging but it was before it all went totally to shit. She really only cried for real reasons at this point so that was way easier to manage.

LO 1 - trouble nursing, not a great eater, typical newborn sleep but not awful, dairy intolerance, cranky!

LO 2 - much more chill baby but terrible awful night sleep and crazy spit up, discomfort after nursing from 6-10 weeks due to reflux

I think, in hindsight, E was a relatively average newborn but the reflux threw us for a loop. She responded well to our fixes, and when she didn't, I had a hard time just accepting that "babies gonna be babies" like my DH did. I just didn't know that a lot of her crying was due to the reflux and that's frustrating in hindsight. But the whole first child transition was a huge mindfuck for me. It was just stressful and overwhelming. I'm hoping it's much easier the second time around, now that I know what to expect and am in the groove of already devoting so much of my time to caring for another individual

when i hear newborn cries, it sends shivers down my back. and i would say my LO was in the medium range--definitely not an easy baby, but not colic/mspi either. he had some reflux, a LOT of gas, and tons of problems falling asleep (nothing worked--nursing, rocking, carrier, chair, carseat, whatever...). his overtiredness and difficulty falling asleep were very challenging for me.

LO1 - very very difficult. He never slept, fussed all the time and wanted to nurse every 90 minutes and would spend at least 45 minutes nursing every time! It was exhausting for me!
LO2 - the opposite! She slept a ton and ate quickly (never more than 10 minutes at a time) and rarely cried the first 3 months.

Being a FTM, I had no idea what to expect and I really thought those first few (maybe 4-5) weeks were bad. Looking back, I was wrong. He was a really good baby, didn't really scream much, and although he had day and night mixed up for those weeks, he got it down pretty fast and was STTN by 6 weeks. Overall, I'd say he was an easy baby.

DD was a dream baby during the first year, ate on schedule, slept well, and was hardly sick. The food pickiness came at full force at 18 months and the terrible 2s are creeping on in. Yikes!

Not as bad as I thought, overall. Luckily, despite my baby's feeding issues, she was never a screamer. The most stressful thing of her entire first year was her eating issues--the first 4 months the refusal to drink at all and her losing weight--and then later me having to EP and stay on the MSPI diet. Getting her tongue and lip ties clipped and taking her to therapy for her jaw...all of those things together stressed me out, so I was super grateful that the rest of the time, she was pretty chill--just totally content to starve. :silly:

She wanted to nurse 24/7. And never be put down... I don't think she was impressed with no longer being in the womb but she tolerated it as long as she was attached to me.

Around 3 1/2 months the nursing became less frequent and she'd hang out with her papa more. But that's when she decided anyone other than me and my husband should stay away from her...

Pretty hellish. Moments of loveliness and snuggles, lots of screaming and crying for hours nonstop (colic). Lots of sleep struggles (days and nights flipped, wouldn't nap for longer than 20 minutes unless being rocked, etc.)

Both girls slept really well early on.
We've been lucky to not have screamers.
I didn't think I could have a second easy baby, but #2 has been easier. I didn't think drowsy but awake was a thing, but it is with her.

If I could guarantee that future children were this easy I'd consider having a whole bunch more.

Both of mine were pretty normal newborns. Neither was extremely fussy and both could be easily calmed. DS1 didn't sleep much so that stressed me out as a 1st time mom. But really overall they were on the easy side.

I found my pregnancies to be more difficult. I was in so much pain with DS1. Everything hurt. With DS2, it was physically much easier but I had GD to worry about.

She was really fussy. No MSPI, thankfully, but she definitely wasn't a sleepy happy newborn. I'd see my friends babies sleeping in the car seat or stroller and look at my screaming baby and want to cry. Then magically, around 3.5 months, she just did a 180 and is now the happiest easy going toddler.

I'm like you- relatively easy pregnancy, birth, recovery, but I do dread those newborn days again.

Both of my newborns were okay. I still didn't love the stage because breastfeeding isn't my favorite thing and the frequency at that age killed me, but neither were screamers and both slept pretty well!

What was your LO like during the first 12 weeks? Dearly though I love them both, I think my boys were/are pretty difficult newborns. Both had MSPI. LO1 (now 24 months) spent the first 4 months of his life screaming for hours every day until we finally figured it out. He did start sleeping in long stretches (8 hours) pretty early on (9 weeks) so that was a relief. LO2 - 12 weeks on Saturday - isn't a very good sleeper, but he hasn't been AS colicky as big brother was. But he's still pretty fussy, and I feel like he's getting fussier, not happier! Aren't we close to the end of the fussy stage?! We recently switched him from BM to hypoallergenic formula after confirming his MSPI, as well as starting him on Zantac 2 days ago for reflux, so I think he's just working some stuff out of his system. But man, I am so jealous of my friends whose newborns never seem to hysterically scream. I definitely wish away the newborn days, because LO1 was just a pure ray of sunshine after he emerged from them. LO2 seems like an even happier/cuddlier baby (between crying fits) so I'm anxious for them to end.

What was your LO's experience with the "fourth trimester?" I've been lucky to have had two easy pregnancies, deliveries, and recoveries, so if/when we have LO3, I have WAY more anxiety about that newborn's behavior than my own physical health.
