@JennyD: I used to drink a TON of coffee. I really think giving up the caffeine was the most effective dietary change. Weather is definitely a factor for me, too. I can't control the weather, obviously, but controlling what I eat and drink has helped enormously. Six years ago I was on a daily preventative pill and had another pill to take when a migraine struck. Now I'm med-free except for the occasional ibuprofen! Good luck with the headache clinic, I hope you find some relief!!

@mrsrain: no caffeine?!? I would maybe die...
I feel like mine have a lot to do with weather and being dehydrated. I read that even drinking tap water can leave you dehydrated for lack of minerals, etc. But I've been referred to a headache clinic, and they'll do nutrition assessments with you. I'm sort of looking forward to it.

@JennyD: for me it is no caffeine, no preservatives, no nitrates/nitrites, no red wine. I found a book on using diet to control migraines and it takes you through this whole process. I used to get multiple migraines a month and now I get them rarely!

Eta: and no tree nuts!

My mom was pretty liberal with the painkillers when we were kids. I can remember having my own travel tube of Tylenol in the 6th grade.

I get a lot of headaches and migraines. I'll take Advil but I don't like taking my migraine medicine unless it's intolerable. I'm looking at ways to decrease the frequency of migraines through my diet.

As for the kid, I'll give her all the Advil allowed when she's got a fever or cough at night. Other than that, I usually give her a placebo ;)

I took a lot of Tylenol for migraines that started with puberty (10ish). As an adult I have worked hard to use diet to prevent migraines so I don't have to over-medicate!

I took a lot of Tylenol as a teen for pain from braces. As a young adult I had a lot of headaches and took Tylenol for those. In the past few years I haven't really taken many though unless it's really bad or unless I have a fever. The most pain killers I have taken is the constant Advil and Tylenol they told me to take for a week after my c section. I didn't think Advil and Tylenol actually did much, but after a few days I started taking less and I was in quite a bit of pain because I didn't stay on top of it. I wasn't given anything stronger, but now I'm happy about that.

My mom was much of the same way. Even now I don't like taking pain meds unless absolutely necessary. The one exception to this though for me is allergy medicine.

Growing up, I almost never used any medicine at all unless I had an extremely high fever. My mom's general philosophy was, just rest and drink lots of water and you will eventually get better.

It took me years before I would take a painkiller for even a very bad headache. Once I started getting regular bad headaches though, all that reticence went out the window and my philosophy became GIVE ME ALL THE PILLS!! But the pills didn't do much for my headaches, so now I'm mostly back to my mom's philosophy.

For my kids of course if the fever is high, we go straight to the painkillers. If the fever isn't too high, I sometimes lean towards a "wait and see" approach involving rest and lots of water. It took me a while to realize that this came straight out of my childhood experiences!

Did you take a lot of painkillers growing up? What about now?
