It's been a really long, drawn-out process for us. Probably at least 6 months so far (but maybe longer...I can't really remember when we started). He HATED being bottomless, so we went ahead and bought him Thomas and Cars underwear to wear, and made a big deal about how they were big boy underwear and Thomas wanted to stay dry and big boys went pee-pee and poo-poo on the potty.

We started out sitting him on the potty (on a potty seat on the regular toilet...he had no interest in the potty chair) every 15 minutes or so, and tried to make it fun...we have a special potty song we sing to him, we'd let him look at a Calvin and Hobbes book, and generally tried to make it really fun to be in there. We made a huge deal about it the first few times he peed (like celebrating!) and he got raspberries the first time he pooped.

After a month or two he started asking to sit on the potty. Now he's in underwear almost full time at home, and he's only had a few accidents (I can count on one hand), all pee except one, but I don't think the one poop was an accident...he was getting over a stomach flu and had had bad diarrhea and I think was reacting to having had no control.

He usually asks to use the potty when he needs to go, but if he doesn't ask first thing in the morning we make him sit on the potty. He's still in diapers at night (he wakes up dry 1-2 mornings a week) and in pull-ups at daycare. They are working with him (they put him on every half an hour) but he never tells them when he needs to go. We think it's because he's just too distracted...his teacher said it often happens that they either get it down at home or school first, and the other place takes more time.

I really think the big boy underwear was a big motivator, though!

ETA: We thought about trying the 3 day method, but with his personality we weren't confident it would work well, and we weren't in a rush to potty-train him.

We just started potty-training last week - my LO turned 3 this past Tues. In the last few weeks, he would open the shower door and sit down on the little potty right next to the shower, all on his own without our prompting. He went pee a few different times, so that's what made me finally decide it time to start training. We have two packages of the Gerber's training pants - they are cloth but have more material sewn into the crotch. They soak up a lot of pee but he would still feel wet. I wanted to skip over Pull-ups as he could care less if he was sitting in a dirty diaper. He had lots of accidents the first few days - we started on Thurs and then I was home with him for Fri and the weekend, too. We tried to stay home as much as possible but did put him in a diaper if we had to do an errand that was going to take more than an hour. On Mon he went to daycare and his teachers were on board, so it was great. Tues they continued (two accidents), and then he had no accidents Wed and has even pooped on the potty twice this week. We've been able to do short errands and he's stayed dry. Next step will be to tackle public restrooms...ugh. I'd also like him to start getting used to the potty seat versus the little potty. I'm glad we waited until he was 3 rather than right after 2 like my MIL kept pushing us to do.

@2PeasinaPod: our boys sound very much alike! Mine will be 3 in July and would also never voluntarily use the potty, but definitely showed body control in the tub. That gave me confidence that he could do it if he wanted to.

I went cold turkey on a Saturday morning and devote the whole weekend to potty training. I put him in underwear, gave him free access to drink boxes (which we never normally have in the house!) and set a timer for every 20 minutes. Tons of accidents - due in part to all the liquids i was giving him - but by Saturday afternoon it clicked and he successfully told me that he had to go. He continued to have a few accidents that night and on Sunday, but by Monday we didnt need to set the timer anymore and made sure to remind him every hour. My mom/MIL watch him and they were on board with asking him every hour.

Poop is a different story for a different day!

@Amelieisme: That's good to know...thanks for the reassurance !

@hilsy85: So interesting...it makes a ton of sense. I don't know why I didn't think about it that way. We certainly don't ask if he wants us to change his diaper...we just tell him it's diaper changing time. Duh!

The good thing is, the other night, I caught him mid pee in the bathtub. I immediately told him to stop...he did (I have no idea how he had the control to do that), and I put him on the potty and he went the rest of the way in there. So maybe he's ready, but likes the comfort of his diaper. You ladies are giving me confidence

@2PeasinaPod: my pedi said yo'ure actually not supposed to ask, because it gives them the power to say no/gives them the control. I would either just try to make it part of the routine (and now before lunch we're going to use the potty), or just wait for him to tell you (have him naked for a whole day or something). But you also have plenty of time! It happens really quickly once it clicks!

@2PeasinaPod: Yeah, I sort of felt the same way about everyone else's kid being trained, but my daycare said most boys aren't trained until 3.5-4 so that made me feel better about it. I decided to take the low key approach and the main reason I'm going for it now is that a) its summer and he can run around naked b) my MIL has summer off and can keep him with her for a week to train (after I hopefully get the initial hard days done) c) I and my daycare teachers think he is ready in that he asks to go on potty and can do it/stay dry often. So we'll see. If it doesn't work, its not the end of the world. Don't feel too much pressure about what others kiddos are doing  My sisters have boys who are just a little older and both brag about how their children were diaper-free at 2 yo. I don't let it bother me...

We've had the potty around for a while, just there, lingering in the bathroom. I ask him often if he has to go and he usually says no. Or sometimes he'll sit down on it with his diaper on.

However, lately, he has been waking up dry. I just feel like it's kind of a sign to start encouraging him a little more. So, if he wakes up dry, we get super excited and take him to the "big potty". He'll sit there and I will ask if he's going to pee and he says "yes!" but never does. Put a diaper on, pees away!

So, I'm just going to keep doing this for a while... I'm terrified to potty train.

We've also been going super slow and just talking about the potty and he's gone 3x, but overall is not overly interested except for his cars undies I bought him. He REALLY wants to wear them and we take a it how when he always go potty in the potty he can.

@2PeasinaPod: my daughter is 3 in November and not at all interested in the potty. I am not forcing or pushing it. She will when she's ready! It seems many kids on here are trained early, but in real life, most I know are trained by 3.5ish.

DS has been around a kiddie potty since 13 months? My mom bought one for us super early so we just kept it around. He started sitting on it and paying attention to us and started showing signs of readiness before two, but I put off training out of my laziness. He did random pees or poos a handful of times sporadically, but we didn't formally train or practice at all until a few months ago.

I took a long wknd back in March (DS was 2y4m) and did a loose 3 day method. We still went out to run errands (1 or 2 hours) and I didn't keep him bottomless all the time because it was still cold in our area. He had a few accidents the first couple of days, but by the third day he had peeing down. He went on all 3 types too: his potty, potty ring on regular toilet, and in public restrooms. #2 took about a week longer. He held it for a couple of days, but got used to it within a week.

We're 3 months in now and he's fully trained and in undies for naps and nighttime sleep too. We didn't actively train for sleep. He started holding and staying dry on his own or waking up on the rare occasion he had to go. We kept him in pullups/diapers until a couple of weeks for overnight, but I finally bit the bullet, bought a waterproof mattress cover and he's been good for the most part, with one accident overnight.

I'm glad I waited to officially train and that he was open/flexible to using the different types of potties, it's made things a lot easier for us, especially since he still needs help in some way with going to the bathroom.

We are still in the middle of it. But we started putting her on the potty before bath a little before she turned 2 (I think). Day care started once a day around 2. She started becoming really interested and would want to go a lot at home, but rarely going. She has pooped a couple times even. But two weeks ago, day care finally started putting her on it multiple times a day. So let her pick out some big girl panties and started on Sat. She is doing good, sometimes she tells us she needs to go, other times we ask her if she needs to go, she says no, but we tell her to try and she goes. She is doing way better then I thought, but I think pullups at day care aren't helping. She has only pooped in the potty once since we started, so that is still a work.

@2PeasinaPod: mine didn't really. And I have a girl and everyone says they're supposed to be earlier and easier. We had to really push her for a bit and after a couple weeks of focusing on it she suddenly started going in the little potty at home. Still in pull ups when we're out and doesnt like the big potty. Have yet to see poop in the potty. I'm hoping one day she will suddenly decide to do that too. It is a little frustrating when everyone else's kid seems to be "ahead" and I've even gotten random questions from strangers about why she's not potty trained because she looked older than she was.

@2PeasinaPod: How old is your LO? Its been a long process for us. My son will be 3 in Aug and he has been using the potty pretty regularly for at least 6 months, but its hit or miss. I haven't pushed much but we're going to do a diaper free run starting next week to really push him. He can pee on the potty (sometimes initiated by him, sometimes us) and even poop on the potty sometimes (always initiated by him) but its taken us a while to get there!

He only sits on the potty at night right before bath, and he's maybe actually peed three times? We've been putting him on the potty before bath for at least 6 months.

We kept the potty out for familiarity for a while and would put her in here and there. Or when she asked. Daycare was actually taking her pretty regularly before we even did.
I took a weekend and did the "3 day method" and had daycare follow through on Monday. They were more than on board. It took DD (27m) probably a week to catch on. Daycare was totally on board and was ready to help as soon as we gave the go ahead. They actually asked us to bring her in underwear before we thought she was ready.

In the same boat here! DS will be 3 in August. He can go on the potty but it is certainly tricky with daycare. I'm actually going to take a few days off next week to work on it and then I'll have MIL keep him the following week to hopefully solidify things before going back to daycare. Hope it's worth it!

i guess i'm the odd one out, but my LO has been potty training since 22 months and at 29 months now, she's decided that she just wants to pee her pants again? like, we drive up to our house after school, she gets out of the car and then pees her pants before we walk into the house. i'm not really sure how the heck to fix this because last week we drove 2 hours and she didn't wet her pull up and went right to the bathroom when i took her. blah. no going back now though.

It was super gradual for us..for about 9 months, he had been peeing in the potty every night before bed. and for maybe 3-4 months, when he was at home and naked on the bottom, he would consistently use the potty. So one day, I bought a big bag of rewards (small toys) and told him he would get one every time he went on the potty. We didn't go back to diapers. He had two accidents the first day and two on the 4th day, but other than that he's been pretty goodl Pooping took an extra three or four days I think.

DD caught on after a day and a half at home. we did the 3 day method as well and it was definitely the push that she needed to start using the potty. we are still not potty trained at daycare, having trouble with the teachers but she is moving up to an older class this week so i'm going to start working on it more with the new teachers. just wanted to comment and advise you to talk to the teachers before you potty train to make sure you're all on the same page! that was my mistake as my daughters current teachers are big pull ups people and not super supportive of potty training and i wish i knew that before, otherwise i would've waited to potty train her after her transition to the older class. so i'd talk to your daycare and see what they recommend and what they're willing to do to help!

eta she is doing great at home still (its been about a month now) even tho shes having issues at daycare.

I'm in the same boat. DS is 2.5. We were doing really good back in March. He would tell us he needed to go. He was going at daycare almost every time. But then it was like we were putting him in a torture chamber. He freaks out on us with just mentioning it. Daycare says he's doing them the same way. I did get him to go last night with M&Ms as a reward. So maybe we can get back on track.

She caught on right away, she was wearing underwear after a 3 day bootcamp (pullups at night still.) I will say she's having a slight regression now like 6 months later, I think it's because baby sister started daycare and she's looking for attention. It's been rather frustrating though because we haven't been in the accident mindset in so long.

I feel like I could have written your post. I don't have any advice right now as we're in the EXACT situation you're in, but following to learn! I have a boy and he's 2.5.

We've been "introducing" the potty to LO for over a year now, but we haven't made the switch to undies yet. I did buy a pack of them finally but I'm freaked out about the whole process and don't want pee and poop everywhere. Ha. I WOH so trying to manage this on nights and weekends is challenging. I need to get with LO's daycare providers about what to do at school, but I'm never there when they are so I guess I should call/email to set up some time.

Did LO catch on right away or was it a gradual process? I'd especially love to hear how it went if you WOH. Thank you!
