@Corduroy: Thanks for checking and getting back to me! Hopefully your LO can handle WCM okay!

@Purpledaisy: Thanks! I'll have to see if my store even carries hemp milk! I know they have almond, though!

No milk allergy here but we are planning on doing almond and hemp milk instead of cow's milk. From my research they seem to be the best substitutes.

@Adira: I heard back from the allergist but it probably won't be helpful for you since Xander has a confirmed allergy. My LO reacted to other foods and has eczema so milk was added in as a suspected allergy. The allergist replied changing her advice from waiting until 18 months to waiting until 12 for WCM. She didn't mention alternative milks.

@Adira: I've been wondering this too since the allergist told us to wait until 18 months to introduce milk. I'm going to email her and see what she says. As you pointed out the milk alternatives are not nutritional similar.

@Adira: We'll be doing hemp milk ... It's most like cow's milk (vitamin & mineral wise).

I mixed the breastmilk and hemp milk around 11 months. Then decreases the amount of bm slowly. He would only take a few sips for a while. Now he drinks maybe 8 oz daily and nurses 3x a day still. At his 1 yr appt I asked how much milk he should be drinking and she said said no more than 16 oz a day because it's just milk. He needs to get his nutrition from a healthy diet.

We started mainly on almind milk at 11.5 mths at our pedi's suggestion. We added it in slowly...and gradually replaced nursing sessions w it. He also started drinking it w meals instead if the water he was drinking

He's tried cows coconut and hemp. But we stick to almond mostly. He eats lots of meat/leafy greens in his meals so I think hea covered I. That dept.

Cood luck!!

@Mamaof2: Thank you! I'm leary of soy milk too so I was thinking coconut or almond milk (though do I need to be concerned about the nuts in almond milk??). Does he usually have his milk with his meals or more during the day like bottles?

@Arden: The almond milk I looked at only had 1g of protein per serving, whereas WCM has 8g! Am I just looking at the wrong almond milk??

Our allergist wanted DS on soy milk but I was leary due to all the hormones so we did coconut milk.

I transitioned at 12 months starting with half BM and half Coconut Milk - then to all coconut milk. He loved it. We had no problems getting protein in him - he loved meats!
he probably had 2-3 sippies a day so maybe 16-24 oz I would guess

We transitioned her when her Rx for Neocate ran out. She was a little over a year old (~13 or 14 months). We tried Almond Milk and Rice Dream. She likes both. But keep in mind that Rice Dream has trace amounts of gluten even though it's labeled gluten-free (they use an enzyme from barley) if that's something you're avoiding.

Transitioning was automatic. She took it right away (it must taste heavenly compared to Neocate)! As for worrying about her not getting enough nutrients, I just make sure she eats. It was difficult at first, especially since she has food allergies, but after they've been weaned for awhile, you'll slowly accumulate a list of favorite foods. But even now at 18 months, she'd have tons of "milk" if I let her and she'll ask for it, too.

There's plenty of protein (and calcium!) in almond milk. And it's delicious and easy to find. I'd start there.

I am thinking about almond milk for LO, not for an allergy but for other reasons. I'm not concerned about protein intake.

So Xander's 10 months now and I've been thinking about how most people transition their children to WCM around 1 and how we won't be able to do that because Xander's allergic to milk...

So I'm curious. What did you transition your non-dairy drinker to? At what age? And how much should they drink a day? And where do they get all the protein they'll be missing out on??
