LOL @ all the diaper lessons! I've been pood on several times but still hesitate to wait to change her bc I don't want her to get diaper rash. She always poops when I unwrap her and get her up for feedings!

@crumbs good advice, I'll remember that!

@london mama good advice! The irregular schedule is hard for me but I am realizing there's nothing I can do about it. So nervous for DH to go back to work..

@sweetkate I did the same thing. I think DH appreciated it but I don't think it helped!

@yoursilverlining: I was just upset that DH got out of changing that first yucky diaper that they talk about because the stickiest yuckiest poo was on me!

Wait 10 minutes after a poop to change her... there's almost always a second explosion :)

Don't send your husband home for the night while you are still in the hospital. I thought I would be fine taking care of DS since I would have the nurses to help.... I think I cried more than the baby did that night and the nurse I had wasn't much help at all.

My first mom lesson was how tired I really was going to be. I had a really long labour and was just exhausted when the adrenaline/endorphins wore off. After finally falling asleep in the hospital for what felt like 2 minutes, a nurse came in and woke me to wake and feed DD. I wanted to tell her to buzz off I'm sleeping, but I needed to get over my tired and take care of my new baby. 7 months later and I still haven't slept through a full night but I just lover her so much I don't mind the midnight nursing sessions.

@Crumbs: A little bit of vaseline in her neck folds will help prevent any rashes from milk build up. You still have to wipe them down at least once a day, but the vaseline prevents them from getting irritated skin (which made my DD very dranky). :)

My very very very first mom lesson was very simple. You must diaper your LO at all times unless you want to clean up a mess. We did skin to skin for the first hour of my LO's life and she poo'd on me 4 times before they put a diaper on her. Of course I didn't care one bit :)

To check all folds! Especially neck folds, regardless of how small it may be. As a newborn, we discovered our sweet and tiny DD had started a cheese factory under her chin! DH and I felt super horrible! It was our first parenting fail, but we've learned since.

@FutureMrsMcK: haha! That was exactly what I was going to post! We had more than our fair share of "near drownings" the first couple of weeks until we got the hang of diaper changing a boy. Even now we forget sometimes and we all get soaked!

Always wait 10 minutes before changing a dirty nappy, there's usually a second round and you don't want to be halfway through a change when that happens!

Also, listen to your baby and be prepared for change. Just when a pattern is established (sleeping, eating, crying) expect it to change.

And most importantly for me, accept your baby's needs and dont try to fight it. Might sound obvious but I've read far too many texts about putting babies on schedules and I sometimes got frustrated and upset when LO would wake every two hours to eat or not behave like he was 'supposed' to. Reminding myself to just give LO what he needs regardless of what the Internet/books say makes both me and him happy and more relaxed.

You don't have the penis/pee issue with little girls, but that doesn't mean they can't create quite the geyser with their hind end.

I learned pretty quickly that babies are independent littli people and you can't force them to do anything. I think it was our second night home from the hospital when DD screamed for 5 hours straight. We couldn't do anything to get her calmed down and I realized I couldnt make her stop crying! I just had to try my best and she had to do the rest.

@beachmama TRUE! My birth plan (which wasn't natural but actually an epi) almost didn't happen! I haven't really used white noise but did watch "The Happiest Baby on the Block" today and tried the shushing!

@futuremrsmck I had a girl but she has peed and poo'd on me during diaper changes already...and yes on our sheets too! Lol

Cover up the penis during diaper changes unless you want to get peed on...especially if you're changing them on your bed at 4am...oh, how I wish I could say I've never slept in pee because I was too tired to wake DH up and change the sheets....

(And I KNEW this one going on...apparently my brain doesn't work at 4am)

That anything you have planned goes right out the window, starting with the birth!

My first "aha!" moment was discovering the magic of white noise. Oh my, did it save our lives in those first few colicky weeks!

My LO is almost two weeks old now, and I think the first thing I have learned as a mom is that no matter what the "experts" say, no matter what your plans are/were, you have to just find the right fit for your LO/family.

I know I have a ton more to learn, but just for fun..what was the first thing you realized/learned after becoming a parent?
