Before we had LO we watched friends of ours struggle with this. The mom stayed at home after their kid was born and was very hands on and the dad while he played with his kid only really did it in the mom's presence. It caused a lot of problems, the mom was so frazzled with never getting a break, the dad didn't develop the skills to handle his child so it was a disaster any time the mom did try to leave.

So when I decided to stay home with LO for a bit we had a good understanding of what happens when one parent doesn't get the opportunity to solo parent. I took care of most of the household responsibilities and all night time awakenings and made sure he had time to relax and exercise sans LO. But he also made sure I had time to relax and exercise sans LO too. He would have missed out on a big part of parenting and learning about his daughter if I was always there guiding their interactions.

I loved that. I think moms are always "on". It's nice to have a few minutes every now and then to kind of regroup. I sent this to my husband. He didn't seem to appreciate it though.

I saw this blog post floating around on FB and thought it was well written and worth sharing.

I know I sometimes struggle with the constant and unending-ness that is being a mother and felt like this articulated a lot of my thoughts. Sometimes I just want ten minutes to be myself, be by myself and to have a break from my favourite shadow :-)
