Right:
- I had two healthy babies
- Both deliveries were fast (about 1.5h of very active labor with #1 and 20min with #2 (from 4-10cm in <20min))
- Both were unmedicated
- Especially after my second delivery is was practically jogging through the hospital by the next day

Wrong:
- My firstborn wasn't able to latch in L&D and they made me pump as of day2 which caused massive oversupply issues
- I had some tearing with #1 because he had his hand infront of his face
- ETA: Oh I did have meconium with both of them but it was never even an issue

Other than that there wasn't much I'd change. I'm really thankful for the uncomplicated births I've had.

Right--
- great support from sister, DH, nurses
- neither of our safety was compromised
- my room was amazing and had a place for DH to sleep (even my post partum room had a bed for him)
-vaginal delivery

Not so great
- had a pretty unnecessary induction due to "high" PB
- labored for 32 hours and pushed for 3 hours
- epidural kept wearing off/too weak
- they kept cranking me full of pitocin because the OB broke my water way too early and there was a time crunch
- pain was so bad, I started hallucinating...I honestly didn't know pain like that existed
- not eating for two days but I was in so much pain, I didn't care but just weak
-the OB said they needed to "partially resuscitate" him which was TERRIFYING but I guess that just means they had to use the bulb syringe
- I don't know how many stitches I had buy I tore quite a bit
-was so swollen and sore, I couldn't walk for a few days and now, 7 weeks pp, my back pain is just starting to go away
-needed the vacuum
- I was so out of it, I didn't get a chance to latch him on for several hours
-he lost a lot of weight by his first appointment

Totally worth it

Right:
- I progressed very quickly once things got going. Went from 3-10 in a couple hours.
- my husband was amazing!
- my dr stayed with me for almost the entire 4.5 hrs that I was pushing. She was fantastic and supportive and ultimately told me yes I could do it when I was begging for a c-section.
- no tears or episiotomy despite a vacuum delivery!
- the new anesthesiologist named Steve gave me the hook up on all the meds after my failing epidural
- ultimately we were all healthy, which is obviously the best thing!

Basically everything else went wrong:
- blood pressure was elevating when I was upright so I couldn't walk around
- dr tried to do a Foley catheter and couldn't get it placed properly so it was an hour of her digging around in there without any result
- there was an emergency on the floor so they had to shut off the pitocin once it was finally up as high as it would go. I had to start over at the lowest level and work my way back up again.
- my dr let me eat but I ended up throwing it all up because I started dilating fast and furious as soon as I ate and my body freaked out
- my epidural kept failing (they kept giving me more and it'd fade out in 30 min)
- I pushed for 4.5 hrs and LO was majorly stuck
- I yelled at everyone, like a lot
- once Baby A was out, Baby B was in distress and was an emergency C, so DH was kicked out of the room. So basically the worst happened - one vaginal delivery and one c-section
- my giant smushed together double placenta (apparently can become a thing with twins) was very difficult for my dr to get out, but I guess at least it was being surgically removed at this point and I didn't have to deliver it. It probably weighed more than each of my little ones!
- this was post L&D, but still related - but I was by myself for a couple hours after delivery because they didn't have enough nurses on staff to have the babies with me in recovery. DH was with the babies but I was really disappointed I wasn't able to nurse for several hours after. When I did finally get to hold my babies, I was interrupted by medical staff who had to take me for X-rays to check to make sure there was no surgical equipment left inside which is apparently hospital procedure when it's that sort of last minute emergency. Unfortunately I was very drugged up (since my epidural failed I was given a cocktail of narcotics during my c-section) and couldn't tell them that it could wait until later. That's actually what I'm most upset about 15 months later!

Right: Mom and baby were healthy

Wrong: I had high blood pressure at 41 weeks leading to induction, wasn't dilating, got an epidural (I'd wanted to go natural but 8 hours into an induction they thought would take 24-36 hours I was over it), finally dilated but then baby got stuck on my pelvis and my water broke but there was meconium in it, her heart rate went crazy, I spiked a fever and they were worried about infection, and I ended up with an emergency c section and then my c section incision opened up at 1 week pp and that was a huge gross deal.

Despite all of that... all that really matters is that me and baby were fine. :)

As I read through these I realize that I really didn't have any expectations. I had scheduled c sections resulting in healthy babies and healthy mama. So to me everything went right.

My only negative is DS1 lost too much weight early on and I freaked. DS2 had jaundice and I barely got to hold him because he needed to be under the lights. But that's it. And in the grand scheme of things, I think it's pretty minor.

Right:
Went into labor on my own.
Had an effective epidural.
Baby and mama were healthy!

Wrong:
Maybe I'm seeing this through rose colored glasses, but I don't see anything wrong with my L&D. Breastfeeding, however, was an entirely different story.

Right:
-healthy baby, healthy mum
-amazing, supportive, patient midwife - I'm sure she is the only reason I barely tore and didn't end up with a csection
-discharged within 16 hours of delivery
-husband was super supportive
-immediate skin to skin and breastfeeding
-easy recovery

Wrong:
-water broke and contractions didn't start, I was GBS+ so I had to be induced :(
-should have got an epidural sooner, the contractions with the oxytocin was terrible and I didn't progress much until I got the epidural
-pushing for 2+ hours was exhausting, midwife threatened to use the vacuum
-DH didn't get to cut the umbilical cord (DH didn't mind) because the cord was around our soon's neck
-I was hoping to go home 4 hours after birth but my midwife suggested I stay overnight since I didn't deliver our soon until 7pm (still wish we went home late, I hated staying in the hospital overnight)
-ongoing issues with thrush (going on 5 months now!!!) probably from the antibiotics I received in labour

@sarah.clarisse: Sorry to take awhile to respond. I had to go into the doctor. Mine had blistered and was oozing. They gave me a triamcinalone cream and removed the strips. It fixed it all within a few days. I hope yours has gotten better!

I wanted to post on this but I needed a good chunk of time! haha.

Wagon Jr., what went right:
- Went into labor on my own
- Labored for a bit at home and got admitted when I got to the hospital (I didn't want to be sent back home!)
- Vaginal delivery, tearing was all upward so recovery was quicker
- Healthy baby, latched on immediately

Wagon Jr., what went wrong:
- 3 epidurals total (2 failed)
- spiked a fever (so he had to be sent to NICU)
- nurse stuck me about a million times trying to draw blood
- pushed for 3 hours with no results and baby never crowned
- vacuum assisted delivery
- delivered after being awake for almost 36 hours.. 24 hour labor/delivery
- huge tears that required many painful stitches
- membrane left behind required emergency trip back to ER on Christmas Day 2 weeks later, then had to start postpartum recovery all over again

Lil Miss Wagon, what went right:
- were given the platinum treatment because everyone at the hospital had seen my chart with the history of failed epidurals!
- my second favorite OBGYN started my induction, then shift change and MY OBGYN (my favorite!) delivered!
- progressed relatively quickly
- spinal cath (actually a negative) provided awesome pain relief, much better than failed epidurals!
- pushed for 15 mins, baby slipped right out: 10 hour labor/delivery
- unassisted, pain-free vaginal delivery, one tiny tear
- healthy baby, latched on immediately

Lil Miss Wagon, what went wrong:
- walked around for weeks 3 cm dilated, labor never started on its own, had to be induced at 39 weeks due to GD
- inadvertent dural puncture resulted in spinal headache which required blood patch procedure 72 hours later, which was traumatizing

Right:
*Short labor
*Minimal pushing
*AMAZING nurses
*Water broke on it's own so I got to experience something 'fun' for my labor story
*No pitocin (it was a close one...)
*Vaginal birth
*Healthy baby <3

Wrong:
*Male Dr (I'm still annoyed, even though it's SO minor)
*Tearing + stitches
*Back Labor
*Cervidil so I couldn't walk around
*Water broke so I couldn't labor in tub
*Milk didn't come in for a while, baby ended up not being a good nurser --> horrible supply
*The WORST spot for putting the saline drip needle in (definitely the worst part of the whole experience)

Right:
-healthy baby delivered
-no tearing/stitches
-DH was a rockstar of a coach
-milk came in right away

Wrong:
-had to be induced for pre-e
-36 weeks
-26 hour labor with 2 hours of pushing
-back labor
-pitocin sucks.
-epidural wore off so I felt everything (was too late to redo it)
-had to be hooked up to magnesium so I couldn't eat or drink for over 24 hours
-the mag made me not be able to see, so I couldn't focus on LOs face until day 3
-couldn't get out of the bed for 2 days
-terrible bedside manner from midwife
-had to stay in L&D because of the mag so I didn't get to spend any time in the recovery side. L&D nurses didn't know much about baby care so no help
-LCs didn't come to L&D side. So no help
-LO didn't and still won't latch. Having to EP. Hate it
-OB wouldn't do LOs circumcision because her office goofed. So we had to go elsewhere
-PPD

amazing...

- arrived at hospital ready to push (and therefore DIDN'T have baby in the car, phew!)
- completely unmedicated, even got away with not getting the shot to help get the placenta out
- labour from first contraction to baby less than 12 hours total
- hospital stay was only one night (could have been just a few hours, but I decided to stay)
- milk came in right on schedule 36 hours after birth
- skin to skin (a given at my hospital) baby was only taken away to be wiped down, suctioned and weighed (he came out super blue)
- and of course healthy mama and baby!

could have lived without...

- err, being stitched up (labial tears and an inner tear) with no pain meds? that was less than ideal
- breastfeeding issues that lasted til around 3 months PP (think thrush, infected open wounds, scabbing, bad latch, me being in so much pain that i scared the baby so much that he didn't want to latch for weeks :(...) BUT my supply survived that first 3 months of pumping, and we BF until 10 months in the end. so maybe that's a success after all!

Wrong:
Water started leaking Friday......delivered Tuesday. I was in the hospital for four days before meeting DD and got pretty much no sleep. I was soooo out of it by the time I finally had her.
Sunny side up and back labor.
Also, because of my protracted labor I hadn't eaten in two days and was really hangry.
Wanted a natural birth.....gave that up after 12 hours on the pit.
MIL was there.
Big weight loss had us supplement on day three and spend an extra night. Gained eight ounces in 12 hours and we got to go home.

Right:
Un-wanted csection saved both of us. I am forever grateful to the medical team and their work that day.
DD was exactly one gram shy of having to stay in the NICU for being too big.
Perfect apgars. Healthy baby.
Fairly easy recovery.

Awesome support from DH
Vaginal birth
Skin to skin for an hour after birth before she was taken to be weighed and measured
Latched and nursed right away
Milk came in within 48 hours

Wrong:
Pitocin
Epi was kept at a minimum because I had a strange reaction to it, so it helped with contractions, but I felt everything when pushing.
Tried other pain management methods before the epi that didn't work or made me feel awful
Tearing
Had to be put on oxygen due to baby's heart rate dropping

Overall, I really can't complain too much.

@marionberry: did you get any treatment for the steri strip rash? I had the same thing happen to me. Just this week from my csection (like you it was due to breech position). The rash on my abdominal hasn't gone away but doesn't itch or anything. How long did yours last?

Amazing team of nurses and doctor
had to be on high BP med
confined to bed, and on my side
Tore during birth

The Good (in no particular order):

AMAZING midwives from the beginning of my pregnancy right through to discharge at six weeks pp
Vaginal delivery
Really good physical recovery (incl episiotomy)
EBF despite lots of issues
Labouring at home for 18-19 hours
A successful ECV at 38 weeks that resulted in a decrease in oedema and improved bloods
Going into labour at eight days overdue so I didn't need to be induced
Baby girl coped amazingly well during delivery and maintained a steady heart rate and constant movement throughout labour

The Things I could've done without:

27 hours of active labour (waters broke at 5am, active labour established at 11am, baby delivered at 2:30pm the next day)
A cervical check by a rough OB
An epidural that had to be adjusted as it totally missed my left hip
Antibiotics that gave us thrush at three weeks pp which we then battled for over two months
Poor baby lost a ring of skin on her head when the ventouse slipped off during delivery and she was quite traumatised by her rough entrance into the world
Failure to progress requiring Syntocinin
Late arrival of milk on day six (hungry baby and very worried mama!)

Overall my labour and delivery was a really positive experience but I was completely unprepared for and traumatised by the newborn phase.

Wrong:

Back labor
Was induced

Right:

Healthy baby
Vaginal delivery with no pain meds
no tears
dilated from 5-10cm in 10 minutes
Amazing support from my midwife, dh and mum
Pushed once and she was born
Immediate skin to skin and breastfeeding
Once skin to skin was done I was able to have a shower, brush my hair/teeth and have something to eat.
From the time my water was broken to lo being born was 10 hours.

Wrong:
- very long induction for oligohydramnios
- baby born in respiratory distress and dehydrated with suspected (thankfully not actual) meconium aspiration and transferred immediately to NICU, only got to hold her very briefly after she stabilized before the transfer
- discharged on insurance company's orders at 48 hours, before the baby was discharged, had to spend the night sitting up in the nursery after 36 hour labour, stitches and an epidural.
- severe pain and mastitis from oversupply syndrome

Right:
- amazing NICU team that had my darling girl stabilized and going from not breathing and low tone to an APGAR of 8 by five minutes. so thankful.
- epidural which my midwife later told me was probably what allowed me to relax, dilate and give birth vaginally rather than progressing to a C-Section. also was amazing and let me sleep until I progressed.
- managed to breastfeed despite having to supplement in hospital and battling painful breastfeeding problems early on
- low birth weight baby had put on 1 pound by her first pediatrician visit. Guess that oversupply was good for something!
- body bounced back astonishingly quickly despite lengthy labour

Right -
Healthy baby, Healthy mom
Wonderful nurses (except one)

Wrong -
Induced at 4cm due to 3 days of no sleep and prodromal labor
It took 16 hours to get to 10 cm
Baby was sunny side up
Pushed for an hour with no results
Intense pain down my leg with each contraction, with an epi
Ended in a c-section
An exhausted mom - seriously, I fell asleep on the op table.

At first I really struggled with what happened. I never had any grand idea of what I wanted my birth to be, but I felt like a failure, like I had given up too easily. But looking back, I literally hadn't slept in days. The prodromal contractions were PAINFUL and I couldn't last another day. So I got induced. From there, things just didn't go the way I thought they would. I do wish I'd tried to get up and walk around a bit. Other than that, it was mostly out of my, or anyone's, control.

Right:
Short labor (15 hours)
Unmedicated vaginal birth
Birth plan was followed for the most part
Labored at home for 11 hours, arrived at the hospital at 6 cm
Immediate skin-to-skin
Excellent nurses/midwife

Wrong:
The hospital didn't have my information on file, so I had to answer all the questions while having contractions.

I was very blessed to have the labor and delivery I wanted, and it was relatively easy. I would definitely give birth at the same hospital again.
