I think it depends on the potty training methodology you will subscribe to. For me it wasn't about readiness but willingness. C was willing to potty train based on being eager to please, responding to correction and commands, being able to walk and beginning to speak, and showing interest in what we are doing on the potty.

Taking his diaper off was my sign. Because if he can take it off, he can smear the poop everywhere. So we started training. He could go 2 hours at time with a dry diaper on a consistent basis. We started potty learning early. We sat on the potty at 6 months old and really started focusing on it at about 18 months old.

I would say he is now perfectly ready which includes being able to undress himself (in large elastic band pants/shorts), Having words for going and telling us immediately after going, being upset that he is wet. He is 2 years and 1 month.

My daughter (20 months) has been asking to use her potty, straining to try and use it, telling us she needs to poop, asking to have her diaper changed after she does it. She's generally interested when we use the rest room, she wants to wipe herself, etc. She's still not ready, but she's getting close for sure. I plan to follow her clues entirely.

He ripped his diaper off and said "I gotta peepee!" Never looked back. LOL. Before that, he'd show some signs - dry all night, wanting to be changed right after he wet or pooed, trying to go when put on the potty, etc. but he just wasn't ready to do it until that day. I'd put him on the potty, put him in undies, whatever, but it wasn't happening until he decided. And once he did he was completely done with diapers. He was 2 years 9 months.

My LO is NOT ready to potty train. She doesn't show any interest in it. At night if she's not falling asleep I'll go check for a poopy, and she will say "poopy!" when I come into the room. But there's no poopy. I want to wait until she's ready, but I'm not so sure about what I'm looking for in signs that she is ready.

How did you know?
