The only thing I'd add to what's already been said is maxi dresses - all I had brought to the hospital was yoga pants, but after having an emergency c-section there was no way I wanted to to wear anything that would press on my incision, even yoga pants!

@evansjamie: I think it really varies person to person. I bought several things that I never used (but I was glad to have them just in case). Did you get a waterproof mattress pad for blood? I can't imagine that you'll bleed THAT much. I had a vaginal delivery + episiotomy and never even bled into my pants (I did wear huge pads, though).

My must-haves:
Mesh underwear (get from hospital)
Peri bottle (get from hospital)
Always infinity overnight pads (these are awesome!)
Water bottles with straw (I got 3 of these from the hospital!)
Colace
Lansinoh breast pads
Earth mama nipple butter (I have Lanolin too but prefer this)
Yoga pants
Nursing tanks
Nursing sleep bras
Painkillers (my OB gave me a prescription before I was discharged)

The only things I could not live without were my 800mg motrin prescription and streaming netflix. I eas nursing around the clock and having something to entertain me was essential. And I was sore for several weeks and the motrin made it bearable.

@mrs.cookie: YES, big water bottle. Our hospital gave us a straw one to take home, and it was a life saver those first few weeks.

Also, ice packs. The nurses in the hospital put small ice cubes into pampers diapers which I shoved into my sexy mesh underwear, and they were pure bliss!

I'd second the things others have recommended, and add a huge water bottle - you get very thirsty if bfing.
I lived in yoga pants, nursing tanks (I love the glamormom tanks). A warm comfy robe or cardy for night feeds.
Lip balm - lanolin can double as lip balm :)
Nice notebook to write down baby stuff, questions and answers, record info.
I'd find out if friends or hospital etc recommend an LC in the area, or contact the lll local group too, if planning to breast feed.

And buy yourself something lovely - it doesn't have to be a big deal, even some gorgeous shower gel can lift your mood when you're a tad tired post partum...

Don't stress too much, I felt like I had to have everything perfect and stocked up before having baby, I'm not sure that I realised you could just go and get what you needed afterwards if necessary! :)

I lived in yoga pants the first couple days, camis, a nursing bra, stool softener, a big water cup, and a fan! I was so hot at night!

Big cup with a straw. I always got super thirsty while nursing and the straw made it easy to drink from while nursing.

I also lived (still do as LO is only 8 weeks) in yoga pants and old navy ribbed tanks.

I took colace for about a month. Motrin also helped with mild irritation I would get from my stitches at night.

A ton of snacks you can eat one handed or really easily while nursing. I was literally nursing around the clock and didn't have many snacks on hand and was hungrier than I've ever been in MY LIFE. I bought a bunch of white hanes men's tshirts and wore those because you get spit up on, pooped on, peed on, a lot in those first few weeks. Tucks, hydrocortisone and dermaplast saved my life! I went through what the hospital gave me so fast, I think I was all out 4 days home from the hospital.

Colace!! I took for almost 3 months pp.

It was one of the one things the hospital didn't provide, I was glad I had some already based on friends telling me to have it - I also had thinner overnight pads that were good after the first few days.

Pea in the Pod nursing camis are the best. I also sat in the boppy when I was sore! A light bathrobe was also great for many different reasons.

Easy-to-grab snacks were also huge. I was ravenously hungry and my sister had made me a bunch of pumpkin muffins that saved me while nursing in the middle of the night.

Agree with lanolin!!!

The hospital provided all of the other pp care (pads, ice pack pads, spray bottle, sitz bath, tucks, dermoplast spray)

Oh, the suggestion of Lanolin is a MUST if your BFing! I also got a prescription for APNO while I was in the hospital, so you might want to see if you can get that.

Also, I've heard a lot of people would recommend a stool softener. I didn't end up needing one, but it's something to think about.

These are the yoga pants I got: http://www.target.com/p/xhilaration-juniors-yoga-pajama-pant-assorted-colors/-/A-13996458

They're soooooo comfortable.

Thank you!

@Bookish: I didn't even think about a step stool. Our mattress is so high that I can see it being an issue.

I scoured all the blog posts about this and recommend that! My real must haves have been nipple cream (I have Lansinoh lanolin and earth angel nipple butter)- bring to the hospital with you; nursing pads, nursing tanks (if you buy a couple that fit you while pregnant they will be nice and not too tight post parting); pads- my hospital have me plenty of the giant ones, but now two weeks pp I am using the regular always thinner ones;

I also go the earth angel mama bottom spray stuff, which is nice but not totally necessary for me, and tucks, which I haven't used since I'm heeling well and so far, no hemmoroids. Oh and a comfy sleep nursing bra- the ones I got are too right and annoying for sleeping :(

So I LIVED in yoga pants, nursing tanks, and a comfy sweater for WEEKS after Xander arrived. Hell - I still put on the yoga pants as soon as I get home from work. I have 3 pairs of the same awesome yoga pants and 2 nursing tanks, plus 2 other comfy nursing tops.

At the hospital, they'll provide you with the mesh underwear, the ginormous pads, the squirt bottle, tucks, and some other things. So just bring some comfy pants and shirts/sweaters to wear.

Once I was home, I retired out of the mesh undies and started wearing some comfy underwear I already owned, plus Always overnight pads, and I continued to use the squirt bottle for a couple weeks.

If you're nursing (or thinking of nursing), some nursing tanks are good (my boobs changed size dramatically after birth, so getting bras beforehand would've been a waste for me). I also got some gel pads that could be cooled or warmed to put on my breasts. Also, nursing pads to deal with leakage.

I'll be 33 weeks this Friday, and it's time for me to dig my head out of the sand and prepare for after the baby comes home. So tell me, what could you not live without postpartum? What should I bring to the hospital and have at home? I've purchased some Lunapads, and I plan on getting some thunderpads and a waterproof mattress pad, but I'm at a loss as to what else I need and I'm starting to feel overwhelmed.

Buying baby things is so much easier and more fun, but mama realizes that she needs to be taken care of too. Help!
