I never flew until I was 15 and it was for a school trip. </p> <p>We always went camping and I'm forever grateful to my dad for passing me his love of the outdoors. Our bigger trips were always road trips, usually to amusement parks. </p> <p>To this day I've never been on a proper vacation with my mom! My parents were also just super frugal. We stayed in motels and even cooked instant noodles in the room. It was all fun, though. We would go to a "holiday camp" on the British coast and stay in a static caravan for two weeks. My BFF's mum would spend the entire two weeks lying outside the caravan covered in baby oil cooking herself (!) and we would go off to the kids club or to the fair or the beach. We stayed in a lot of motels, which seemed luxurious in my little girl eyes. Lots of swimming in lakes. One too many trips to the ER later, vacations were put on hold.</p> <p>A few years later, my parents bought a beach house in the Outer Banks so we've been going there for over 20 years. We always drive down. As kids, we'd go for Easter and thanksgiving, too. I do want to camp and take road trips with my LOs but I don't have fond memories of this! </p> <p>My family was always fighting so they were very stressful. My parents were also really cheap so we always stayed in really gross hotels if we didn't camp. A lot! Almost every weekend, at least once a month. We also drove everywhere up and down the Pacific coast. My dad loves driving and hates flying, and we couldn't afford nice trips. </p> <p>Now I can't wait to go camping and on road trips with Charlie and Olive!</p> <p>What were your typical family vacations like? </p>
