My Mom bought me a book called Wheat Belly, she's told me a little/enough about it that wheat scares the daylights out of me. My vote is for wheat.

This is so crazy to think of! I bet it'll be something like a certain additive or something that they all of a sudden realize is SUPER bad, not just potentially not great.

And sidenote- back when EVERYONE smoked, my mom said her house was always full of smoke. Her and most of her 9 siblings, AND her parents. Her aunt and uncle also had 10 kids but a few of them had really severe asthma, so they didn't allow smoking in their house. My mom's mom and aunt had the same lamps they bought together at a sale, and my mom said she started to realize that maybe smoking was bad when after a year, the lamp at her aunt's was perfect (the no-smoking house) while the one in her house was dirty and pitted (it was metal) and looked nasty. She said it made her wonder what smoke did to HER if it destroyed METAL. She quit not long after! Crazy right?

I didn't name some of these things because I feel like it's already known that they're bad for us - artificial sweeteners, high fructose corn syrup, antibiotics/hormones in meat, etc. I definitely agree that all of them will prove to be detrimental to our health. Maybe not as bad as cigarettes, but still harmful.

I know sugar isn't "good" for you, in terms of weight and things like that, but I'll eat pure cane sugar any day over the artificial stuff, which is pure chemicals.

@MrsScallop: Well, GMO is not the same thing as hybridization, but I get what you're saying. I am gluten intolerant and there is no such thing as GMO wheat (at least, not officially, not on the market) and I blame the hybridization.

@FarmWifeGina: Eating whole corn doesn't bother me (not yet at least, my sensitivity has gotten worse as I age), but processed corn things definitely do. I haven't thought too much about GMOs, but to be honest, I would also consider any domesticated plant to be a GMO on some level. We dont know if our artificial selection for certain traits carried others along that could cause problems for us.

I agree with a lot of the above but especially the cell phones and processed foods. Also. I'm sure the chemicals in sunscreen (and lots of other beauty products) aren't the greatest thing to slather across our skin.

@FarmWifeGina: I appreciate you going out on your limb :) I hope that they change the preservatives. If formeldahyde is a known carcinogen and aluminum has been evident in brains of Alzheimer's patients- I don't understand why those are still common additives. Just like they finally realized thimerasol was a dangerous ingredient. Just my two cents :)

I would agree with HFCS. I have a corn allergy/intolerance and it is amazing how many things have HFCS in it. And those commercials for it make me mad. My body definitely can tell the difference between HFCS and regular sugar.

Processed food and soda, I'm thinking. I do pretty well at staying away from the former, but not having soda is soooo hard. I am down from having 1 or 2 a day to maybe 3 or 4 a week, so I guess that's progress?! I know it's terrible for me, but I love it.

I think it'll be a combo of a few things. I think it'll be processed foods with all the chemicals, along with soda, fast food, and HFCS. I think they all fit within the same realm- unhealthy foods that are not "real".

That being said, I do enjoy fast food and try not to eat it but sometimes I just crave it! Bad, bad, bad!

And not quite the same thing, but I've wondered which of our childrearing practices will turn out to be harmful (like the tummy sleeping of our era), and just recently some experts came out and said tummy time isn't necessary (not harmful though, fortunately!).

@Running Elley: Really? What makes you say caffeine? And do you mean caffeine alone, or are you referring to all the chemically-enhanced drinks and energy supplements?

I feel like we would have known by now if plain old caffeine - just coffee or tea - caused huge health problems, since people have been drinking it for so long. But I do agree that the enhanced stuff is scary due to all of the chemicals and unnatural ingredients.

ETA: I meant to mention that there have been studies done showing that caffeine can help ward off dementia.
