@ilovepie: Just ordered this book, it looks awesome.

This thread, combined with some unseasonably warm weather, has gotten me really excited (but back to a low of 12 tonight, so plenty of time to plan before planting 😂)

@jennlin821: I got the Square Foot Garden book out of the library a few years ago when we started and that really helped me know how to even build and fill a raised bed. We grow cherry tomatoes because we don't get enough sunlight for bigger ones.
For planting, you want to know what zone you are in. A google of your nearest big city and planting zone will tell you. Then most plants have approximate planting months on the seed packet by zone. Some you start inside, some you just stick in the ground outside. It depends on your zone and type of plant/season. It IS daunting at first, but that book helped as well as just picking a few, trying my best, and keeping notes for next year.

Y’all inspired me to tackle our overgrown garden bed during outside time today!

I am going to go super simple this year and do a couple tomato plants, some basil and parsley, and then cutting flowers. I’m in FL so I feel like I’m already starting late prepping the beds but I’m going to get at it anyway 😆

Researching the right flowers for my zone tonight to keep the momentum. Anyone have faves that can handle Zone 9?

I'm in Minnesota, so I won't plant my garden for 2-3 months, but I always do parsley, zucchini, carrots, lettuce, cucumber, and radishes. I also have raspberry plants and I'm thinking about planting an apple tree this year!

I love this post! Thank you for asking

This year, I'm growing from seed:
Zebulon, Titan & Double Sun King sunflowers 🌻
Zloty Cepelin & F1 Baccara zucchinis
Green Disc & Custard White pattypans
Brandywine yellow tomatoes
Muscade de Provence pumpkins
I have leftover Morning Glory & runner beans that I'll also plant.
If I'm really in the planting mood, I might give Asian leafy greens another try (Kailan & Choy Sum)

This weekend, I'll sow some old Padron peppers (to be kept indoors) more as an experiment, red malabar spinach, and the tomatoes.

I keep telling myself to stop trying to grow sweetpeas (they don't do well in my climate), but they're my fave, so I might end up getting some because I forgot to buy nasturtiums and those are a must.

@periwinklebee: A basic veggie garden doesn't need to be too time consuming. I water a few times a week, more when it's hot, but with say, one 4 x 8 bed that would take maybe 5 minutes, and depending on the age of your kid, your responsibility could be to remind the kiddo it's time to water their garden (or even just set out a sprinkler). And then you can harvest on the weekends or as you need things to make dinner that night. I only weed a couple of times per summer, and the time commitment there is dependent on how big your plot is. Raised beds and mulching can also cut down on the the need for weeding.

@jennlin821: If you go to a local garden center (not home depot/lowes) you should be able to talk to someone about what you have in terms of light/moisture and they can make recommendations. They're also much more likely to have plants starts that are appropriate for your area vs. more generic plant varieties. My best recommendation is to check in on your garden a couple of times per week after work and not just on the weekends. Usually if you notice that a plant is looking kind of sad (either wilty or browning) you can take action or ask for help (again, make friends with your local garden center) before the situation is too bad if you're checking in regularly.

@jennlin821: perhaps there's a local gardening facebook group or something? I think local is the way to go in terms of learning what works, as so much about pests, soil, weather, etc is very local and really influences what will do well. If there is a university with an ag school in your state, sometimes their website can be a good source of info as well about what is likely to do well in local soils.

I would love to hear how much time people spend in the vegetable garden? We already have pretty extensive perennial beds, trees/shrubs, and some annuals that require care (ugh weeding...). I think my older child would LOVE doing vegetables, but I don't want to bite off more than I can chew.

@Mommy Finger: can you send her my way?!?

I don’t know anyone local who gardens. I’d love to spend the money to have a professional gardener set it up and teach me exactly how to do everything day by day .... but I don’t have any extra money and the point of the garden is to save $$$!

I’d love a gardening for dummies book that is so step by step that it’d be impossible to mess up!

How did you all learn what/how/when to plant?

I really want to start a raised bed garden, but I know NOTHING about gardening. And I'm a terrible plant mom, I remember to water our philodendron about once a month.

We successfully grew tomatoes last year - but we had three plants, and each only gave us 2-3 tomatoes. I remember my grandparents having bowls and bowls of extra tomatoes, which is what I'm going for. I'd also like to try to grow some kind of greens, and maybe carrots? We've done herbs in pots (basil & cilantro), but last summer I think we over-watered them, and they died very fast.

So anyways, is there a book, blog, website, etc you suggest to get us started?

I'm really excited this year for a garden as we are having landscaping work done and part of that is having a raised garden bed built. For sure I want to grow zucchini, cucumbers, broccoli, and green beans. I will have a tomato plant but maybe just one this year. Every year I comment that we grow a lot of tomatoes for a family where no one eats tomatoes. True I try to make sauce or soup out of them but still, it's a lot. And last year, none of them turned red. It was a strange, hot summer. I do have a spot where I want to grow herbs. Definitely basil and cilantro and we'll see what else. I'm still early in my learning to grow things journey.

@Mrs. Carrot: we don't get ideal sun but I've found that small vegetables like cherry tomatos still have enough time to grow and ripen. I'm not sure our watermelon will work out this year for the same reason, but it's fun to try new things.

We really need to start planting. I wish I had it all together to start this week with the weather we have but I had planned on next week and I'm just not ready yet.

We'll try some spring crops of snap peas, carrots, lettuce, spinach. Also some summer crops of tomatos, green beans, basil, rosemary, and watermelon. Oh and flowers for the first time!

I’m also pre-planning right now! I can’t plant until Memorial Day, but I am SO excited about gardening this year since it will feel so normal. I always do greens, cherry tomatoes, peppers, green beans and herbs. I plant carrots every year, but don’t usually have much luck with them for whatever reason. We also have several perennial herbs including mint, rosemary, chives, and thyme, and patches of red and black raspberries. I also started a strawberry patch 2 years ago, and it seemed to be mostly filled in by the end of last season so hopefully we’ll get lots of strawberries this year. 🍓 Every year I also pick something different and interesting that the nursery has to try (ex. Tomatillos or corn) which is entirely based on what’s available when I show up to buy starts.

We do tomatoes and cherry tomatoes every year (tomatoes mainly because I love fried green tomatoes!), kale, bell peppers, jalapeno peppers and banana peppers (last year they didn't do well though), zucchini (for zucchini bread!).
Last year our brussel sprouts did really well so will probably plant them again. I love peas just to eat right out of the garden but haven't had good luck with them either.

Last year we planted too early and lost a LOT to frost, so I will definitely wait this year.

I'm going to attempt flowers just to see what happens. We're in a valley and based on my observations we don't really get a lot of sun for enough duration to grow food. This is our first planting season here (last year was our first year in the house and we decided to just see what comes up), so I'm going to try some flowers first. Hopefully some color will happen!

For any gardeners, or aspiring gardeners, what will you grow this year? We can't plant anything outside here until mid May usually, but I'm getting antsy to plan. I just pre-ordered a bunch of seedlings from a local farm - 5 different kinds of tomatoes, spaghetti squash, brussels sprouts, cucumber, broccoli, some herbs, and nasturtiums. We also have some carrot seeds to plant and will hopefully do some green beans. We have one 4x8 raised bed and will be getting another this spring. I usually do the herbs in pots. What are your plans?
