@Littlebit7: I think a lot of places stopped selling the corded roman shades, if you do have them, you're supposed to remove the cord and make them stationary, which kind of defeats the purpose IMO.

@Foodnerd81: Thanks! That may have been what we saw. My mom has a solar shade but its still very transparent from the outside looking in. These had the full transparency looking out but you could see nothing looking in. They almost looked more like a bamboo texture or something.

We got pull down roman shades for our French doors! I had a company come out and measure but you can also measure yourself and order online. I don't remember which site we used but there are lots of them I think!

@Foodnerd81: @mediagirl: We just got cordless roman shades for the front of our house from our local Budget Blinds (spoiler: they weren't exactly "budget"). Ours have a little pull ring at the back of the shade. They were a good solution for our needs though I would have preferred something a little more wallet-friendly.

@T.H.O.U.: look up solar shades. I think they allow you to see out but not in. But I have mostly seen them as a roller not a roman shade.

@Littlebit7: you can get cordless roman shades now, but I'm not sure exactly how they work. Something with magnets, but safer since there are no long cords for kids to get at. I'm thinking about them in our playroom but there are other areas to spend money first.

@mediagirl: those are roman shades. I'm sure you can buy them in a store (target and pottery barn for sure)
The only thing with them is that they aren't particularly durable. I've found the threads that hold the pull strings often let go. As long as you don't have a cord yanker (my husband is the worst) they should be ok! But I agree with you they are much more visually appealing

@mediagirl: So that one on the bottom left looks similar to something some friends have. Their designer put them in that lets you kinda see out but you cannot see in from outside. She was able to find them online for a cheaper price.

@T.H.O.U.: @Littlebit7: we got the samples for cellular shades and neither of us like the look of them.

I've been researching other options and found these pictures. I like this look - like pull-down curtains. Any idea on what they are called/who sells them?

@MrsLonghorn: that is a good idea but I really enjoy looking outside through those doors. I may use that for another area in my house, though - thanks!

@looch: I was thinking curtains but then I saw @T.H.O.U and @Littlebit7's suggestions about cellular shades. I think those would be the perfect solution. We have been looking for something for our windows in the breakfast area, as well (something just for the bottom) so this may be it.

Thanks!

@MrsLonghorn: Thats a great idea too! We used this on our door to our garage which had window panes at the top. I didn't want to sit from my living room and look at the junk in the garage so I put this frosted stuff on the window. Works great !

I would consdier a semi-transparent privacy film to filter light without having fabric in the way -- that way, you can still easily use the doors if you want. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B007RCX088

Yep I'd mount shades above the doors. so you can pull up/down or tilt to allow some light but not tons. They are easy to install too. We have them on our French doors

I would think about mounting four cellular shades on each door. It would let in light but be energy efficient.

I would go for ease and do a single rod across the top and then do curtain panels.

Another option is to use those window clings.

I have these 2 big doors in our sunroom. We don't use them - they currently have a low bookshelf in front of them. We need to cover them because the sun just streams in during the afternoon heat and it really warms up the house.

Should I just put up curtain rods and some black out curtains or do something else? Eventually we are going to replace these doors with sliding glass doors...but that is down the road.
