We currently live in an 800 sq ft condo that we own. I think for the next place, we're looking for 2000 sq ft minimum.

We have 2,000 plus a finished basement and I'd like about 3,000 in our next home. While layout is key, I'd like a mud room, a master bath suite, and larger kids bedrooms.

After some more thought, I'm coming back to add that eventually, when we do move, it will be for another bedroom. We can fit a crib/dresser in our current room, but actually, I'd sort of like to go to a floor bed rather than a full sized crib. Our problem there is that I'd like to keep the dog away from future sleeping little ones on the floor, and since she's in our room at night, that would be impossible. So, another room with a door will be on our list. But we've seen a few 900 sq. ft. apartments with two bedrooms, and I think that's plenty of space, given that the layout is good.

One thing we did do was to rent a small storage locker for things like suitcases, Christmas decorations, off-season clothes, etc. It lets us keep things without cluttering the house up.

you guys have some pretty high standards! wow! maybe it's because i live in new england and a lot of homes are much older and smaller so that's what i'm used to.

i think 1,250sq ft can be doable. i'd like to buy 1,400-1,800 sq foot home, because housing is $$$$$$. if i money were no object 2,500sq feet, plus a garage and basement storage.

@Mrs. Jacks: Ditto. Our current house is 3,500 (not including the basement). We don't have a lot of stuff, but we like having *space* . . . I don't think I would function well in less than 2,500.

We're in 750ish right now, renting a one bedroom. It's fine for two adults and two cats (no kids yet) but I would still love a bigger place! At least two bedrooms is the dream right now :-)

Our last rental was 900sq ft with a decent layout. It was nice, but tight, especially if we had a 2nd kid. Our current rental has an ok layout, but it is about 1700sq ft. It's an old place (1890s) so there is some wasted space with our entry hallway/area which is bigger than my first NYC apartment (!) at about 215sq ft.

To rent: 1000 sq ft (knowing we will soon have 2 kids)
To buy: it's hard to say, maybe 1800sq ft, which should include at least 3 bedrooms and a home office area.

We're renting a house now that is 900 and it's almost too tight of a squeeze (I think it'd be better if we had a garage for storage!). When we first started dating we lived in an apt that was 550, but we've acquired a lot of stuff since then!

To buy I'd want at least 2000. If I buy, I'm in it for the long haul, so something we can grow into is perfect.

1200 for renting, if we ever rent one day. But that's with 1-2 young kids. 3 kids? We're talking at least 1500 for a rental.

To buy, preferably 1800 and up. 2200 is ideal for me.

EtA: right now we are in a 1200 sqft rambler and it feels soooooo TIGHT now that we are prepping for baby #2.

We have about 2200 sq ft of finished space and another 350 that is utility/garage space, and it's way too big for just DH and me. When we were renting, we had 700 sq ft (too cozy after awhile) and then 920 (fine amount of space but not the best layout). We bought with the intention of having kids, though, and our requirements were more about the number of bedrooms and bathrooms than actual size...but I doubt anything under 1800 sq ft would have met our requirements.

We're renting 1500 sq ft right now and it feels just right for us. 150-200 sq ft of that is a second bedroom & bathroom that we barely use right now, although it's really nice for guests. If we were staying here with our LO, it would be a perfect fit, although we'd miss having a place for guests.

Now that we're hoping to buy relatively soon, around 1800 - 2000 sq ft is what I'm looking for. Really, it doesn't need to be a whole lot bigger than our current place, but I would like 3 bedrooms instead of 2.

I agree with @BabyBoecksMom: its all about layout! My parents house is similar square footage but feels muh bigger to me because its a two story instead of a ranch. We were in 900 square feet for the first few weeks as a family of three and with zero storage or garage space it was soooo cramped! If I didn't see and hubby don't old we'd be fine in smaller spaces.

It really depends on the layout. Our old condo was just over 1200sf, but wasn't setup well for children or a family.

We have just over 2600sf now, which is more than enough. I would never want or need something larger, especially living in New England where the heating costs are astronomical. I don't like wasted space.
