Well we're moving an hour away, so that is causing me to switch pediatricians right now. ...although I was already considering firing our current one. I worry that she's a little too laid back -- like I have to remind her about lead testing my daughter (we live in an old house) or checking in on milestones. She is completely over-worked, and you can totally tell. It makes me worry that she'll miss something.
I haven't been to DD's new doctor yet, but the office has been so responsive and on top of things so far. I have a good feeling about the office at least, and if we don't like the pedi that she's signed up with right now, we can always switch to another.

We switched after our first visit. They had LO and I wait for about 15 minutes in the waiting room, then they moved us to the exam room and had me strip her down and wait for the doctor, the room was cold and we waited for 30 mins good thing I had a blanket for LO. Then when I met the doctor she scolded me for using wipes on LO and I should only breast feed her (i was supplementing because I was on strong antibiotics and I had to pump and dump). I did not feel comfortable with the practice after that and left. I was so glad I made the decision because we love our new practice

If I felt she was underminding me as a parent, if she wasn't listening to me, or if she had poor bedside manner with LO.

Luckily this is not our case, our doc is amazing and I look forward to our appointments with her because she's so great with LO & with me and DH.

i switched peds when i realized that all the advice she was giving was very old school and i was just discounting/not listening to anything she told me! i was like, what is the point of going to this doctor if I don't listen to anything she says because i know more current research and recommendations than she does!

example - she wanted me to start solids at 4 months (rice cereal) because apparently before 6 months, breastmilk was no longer giving enough calories.

another example. when LO started fussing during breastfeeding and i couldn't figure out why i was having trouble, she automatically diagnosed it as gas and said to give gas drops. i suffered for 3 months with having trouble nursing LO to the point that i was making up stuff in my head - I thought I could only breastfeed him when he was lying flat on his back, so i would lie him on the change table and lean over and feed him that way. hurt my back a couple of times! Finally at 6 months, I went to a new ped who was more informed about breastfeeding and solids and he said that it had to do with my flow and i needed to switch breasts sooner (because when my flow slowed down on one side, LO would get fussy that he couldn't get milk out)......my problem of 3 months was literally solved in seconds after i got that advice!

Another example - LO had a diaper rash when he was a newborn, old ped said diaper free time is important, which is true...but to the point that i should let him nap without a diaper!! so i tried that once and just had a big mess to clean up, LOL. I since figured out that i just needed to let him air dry after every diaper and no rash since.

I moved doctor's surgeries when I had E because you can never get through on the phone to make an appointment. It didn't matter when it was just me - I'm never ill anyway - but I didn't want to be left hanging with a poorly baby!

@MamaMoose: Agreed. This would definitely make me switch.

I think another thing would be ease of getting an appointment. If I could never get an appointment, I would switch to someone who was more readily available to take my son's health more seriously.

We switched from a pediatrician to a family practitioner when DD was about 6 months old. We didn't agree with a lot of the pediatrician's advice and we felt like he didn't really care about our concerns. We also had issues with really long wait times, even for scheduled appointments (one time we waited 2 hours for a well baby check!). We were much happier with our FP, and then found a fantastic pediatrician in our new town when we moved last winter.

I'm on my third pedi in three years. My first was conveniently located but had a terrible bed-side manner (not personable at all) and the second was way too over-booked, it was hard to get my daughter in when she was sick and sometimes I'd wait with a sick child for up to two hours---no thanks.. then she'd run all of these unnecessary labs. I am on my third now and love this office, they are holistic and very accomodating... The number one thing for me though is wait times and feeling comfortable. I felt like I had to hide my co-sleeping and extended nursing from the first two because they were unsupportive.

a lot of things, such as how available they are, I want a ped that is easy to access and easy to get appointments with, also if they have very different opinions on things

If she just brushed everything off and/or was rude or rough with me/LO. I'm not concerned, though, our ped is a family member of a friend and is wonderful so far.

We switched because the staff was really rude, the office was very dated, and our dr wasn't very attentive. I felt like she kind of dismissed our questions and she just didn't have a great manner.

@MamaMoose: same. I don't love the office staff at our ped, and I can never get someone on the phone about concerns, I always just have to come in, which is annoying, but I really like the doctor and he doesn't make me feel dumb for coming in over the tiniest things, which I really appreciate. If he blew it off I might consider switching. Also they are three blocks away.

If he or she didn't take my concerns seriously, or if they were always running late. Ours sometimes pushes things I'm not comfortable with doing, but he also respects my opinion as a mom and knows I probably won't try those things.
