I fired Liv's pedi when she was about 6 months old. He had no bedside manner, he was rough, he seemed like he despised his job, and any time any little fever or pain popped up, they wanted to throw antibiotics at us to fix it. Luckily we never gave them to her because none of them were valid infections...But the main thing for me, I was never comfortable in front of him. I was scared to ask questions and just got very timid and uncomfortable in his presence. If you know me, that is NOT me. Im not afraid of anything and I am very, very vocal. That was a cue from my gut to leave. Ive never looked back and we LOVE her new practice.

I wouldnt leave over an incident like yours if it was just a one off.

It really depends on what the difference of opinion is about. In the situation you described, I would thank her for her suggestion and do what I felt was right. If it were a case where she wanted to do a really invasive treatment when there were other options that could be tried first, I would likely seek a second opinion.

One thing about switching, since we've done it due to relocation: You have to be on top of the records. Make sure you get them and make sure that they are complete. Ideally, you would get copies of records as you go along. (I do this at every visit.) Doctors' offices are, in my experience, really awful at record-keeping.

I'm considering switching over issues with being able to contact the office and make appointments. I've waited 20-30 min on hold several times when LO is sick, and although the practice has evening hours when I called last week to try and make an evening appointment they said they don't book those appointments until the daytime ones are full, which defeats the purpose of having those evening hours IMO.

I wouldnt switch. I switched because my Ped got super pretchy with me about using wipes. The practice had me wait in the cold examination room with my DD naked for about 30 mins. So I left and went to another practice. I was glad I made the switch

I wouldn't swith, either, unless you continuously had differences of opinion or didn't mesh well. We switched DD at 6 months because of major differences of opinion and because of major issues with the office, that the doctor refused to address. Personally, I think it's best to stay with the same doctor unless it's a major issue.

I wouldn't switch because of that. I'd probably nod and smile if she told that to me.... and then do whatever I wanted instead. As long as everything else is ok and I liked the doctor I'd stay. I'm at a practice with 4 doctors though so I could always just ask for LO to see a particular doctor and avoid that one.

A major difference in opinion over something large would make me switch. Like... if our ped had criticized me for C being on formula. Or the idiot that told me that she HAD to be rolling by 4 months and had my worrying like a crazy person.

A friend is switching right now because her ped told her that she's a bad mother and that she needs to quit BFing (her son is a year old and is totally healthy and fine) and has to start fattening him up because he's too small. She actually told her to start feeding him ice cream and sweetened condensed milk every day. She and her husband are both tiny, so their son was bound to be small. Totally ridiculous.

Like others said, I'd make a switch if her suggestions were constantly at odds with what feels right for our family and I didn't feel like LO was getting the care he needed.
But, like @looch: mentioned, I'd switch if LO was overly afraid of seeing the pediatrician.

We loved our first pediatrician, he was on the same page as us, didn't want to medicate LO unless it was truly necessary. Our pediatrician moved to another facility that would take us 25 mins to get there, so we decided to try his replacement. We made an appt with the new pediatriican for LO's 4 month check up, where she suggested physical therapy since he wasn't turning over yet, a helmet to round out his head, super strong percentage of hydrocortisone cream for his eczema, and told us to convert our office into LO's bedroom so we can let him CIO. We didn't agree with any of it, nor did we feel like she understood our situation about how we're living in a 700 sq ft townhouse awaiting for our home to be ready. Plus, she never took any consideration that LO was delivered early and he might have some delays before hitting some milestones. We never went back to her after that visit, we decided to drive 25 mins to his old pediatrician and have never regretted that decision since. Happy to report, LO is now 9 months, can flip, sit, stand on his own with no therapy interventions, his head round out on his own, sttn, and his eczema still flare up once in a while but not where as bad as it was when he was 4 months old. BEST DECISION EVER not going back to that pediatrician.

I would make a switch if I didn't feel comfortable with him/her. One recommendation wouldn't make me switch because it is just a suggestion. I agree though, I would never add chocolate syrup to help my baby drink milk. I see bigger problems arising from that than not drinking milk!

We had a ped with a terrible bedside manner, my son was basically traumatized by visits with him, so once we found a ped with a good bedside manner, that would be tough for me to part with!

I wouldn't switch over this one incident. I wouldn't take the suggestion, but I wouldn't move over it. I think we have to sort of recognize that our pediatricians, while more experienced and educated than we are, are not all knowning. Maybe this was something that worked for her with her kids in the past and it's the only thing she knows to help. Since it's not a treatment for an actual sickness or ailment I would just ignore it.

I don't think that would be a dealbreaker for me, especially if all other things considered, I still really liked the pediatrician and office overall.

The bees wrote a post (last week, i think) that discussed pediatricians and their role as medical providers... I agree with the thinking that they are not necessarily always going to be the best experts on things like sleep and nutrition.

I don't think I'd switch over that but I would laugh, in a not funny are you serious kind of way.

We switched primarily due to poor fit. We just didn't see eye to eye on MANY things & I found myself incredibly stressed every. single. visit. because I knew we would butt heads. He refused to talk to me about compromises or alternatives or even things I could do to make "his way" possible. It was horrible... he ultimately "fired" us before we could get in with another pedi, which we're STILL on the waiting list for.

Good pedis are hard to find these days so as long as yours isn't pushing chocolate syrup like you *need* to do it then I would over look it.

A single difference of opinion (recommendation really, not treatment) wouldn't make me change but if we kept differing on parenting styles and care over and over, then yes that would be an indication to switch. Treatment for issues (medication, surgeries, etc.) that we were not in agreement over and they weren't willing to work with me, then one instance of that would make me consider switching.

Part of the reason we chose the pediatrician we did is because he was open to discussing things rather than saying it was his way or nothing. A friend of mine switched to our pediatrician because she was having trouble finding one that was open to alternative medicine. My pediatrician spoke with her and was willing to openly say that just because he didn't understand why something worked didn't mean it wouldn't work. To me, raising and caring for a child is a partnership, not only in a marriage but also in the medical care you choose.

I prpb wouldn't switch it your situation over one bad thing as long as u like her and ypur happy woth everything else that is :). We are currently going to switch BC our pediatriton told us the only way to get P not wake up and eat at night would be to let him CIO. Even when I asked for alternatives he said that was the only way! Too old school for me.

Yesterday I posted about how my LO's pediatrician recommended (over the phone) that we add chocolate syrup to her milk to encourage her to take it. I didnt really like that suggestion and it worried me a bit that she would even suggest it. Some of you had mentioned that you would switch doctors after a recommendation like that.

Just wondering what it takes for you to switch doctors, does it have to be something big of just a difference in opinion?
Overall i really like her she isnt a "by the book" type of doctor and is usually very reasonable and available to talk on the phone at all hours of the day or night. Aside from this incident I really like her
