I can see my mom thinking "nipple confusion" isn't a real thing. I plan to get the Comotomo bottles that are breast like and recommended for babies that are also breastfed. My mom nursed and used Playtex bottles with the disposable liners for formula. My bro didn't have a problem eating from either source and I'm sure I didn't either.

My in-laws could not understand swaddling with the Swaddlemes. They just hated how tight we would wrap them up. Whenever they'd be over and helping, they'd use the Swaddleme, but just sort of drape it loosely around the babies and then velcro it, totally defeating the point of a tight swaddle!

My parents are more open to the new way of things, but they don't understand a lot of the feeding rules these days. My kids were barely 5 months and my dad asked if he could give them Cheerios! My mom said she gave us really thick rice cereal in our bottles at 6 weeks old!

@illumina: @Foodnerd81: It's still way safer to be RF when you get hit from behind. Think about it: whiplash is caused because the momentum is moving forward so your head/neck go forward then whip back. When RF, the child's head goes into the seat.

ETA: My mom couldn't get over how bare LO's crib was. But she works at a children's hospital so she understands and didn't try to persuade me to add a bumper or anything like that.

@Foodnerd81: only about 20% of car accidents are from the rear, anyways! And the seat absorbs it. I'm not a video watcher, either. There's a lot of "why rear face 12-24 months" but I've been scrounging for data supporting 24+ month ERF

My mom used to think the big expensive strollers were overkill, but then she pushed my sisters bugaboo and a cheapie stroller and realized how much smoother the ride is. Now she says she wishes they had better strollers when we were little. Hers didn't fold to go into a car at all, so they only place she could walk us was around our very residential neighborhood. Also, mommy meet up kind of things in general- she wishes she'd done something like that because she felt very isolated as a sahm.

My grandma thinks everything is amazing. Like, I pulled out a pouch at her house and she was amazed. It's sweet. :)

@illumina: Dh says the same thing about "what if you get hit from behind?" Ive told him a thousand times that rear facing is way safer, but that this is one thing I am just trusting and cannot read or watch videos explaining why. If he wants to do more research he is welcome to, but I will never get the crash test images out of my head and I just trust the experts on this issue! (He isn't advocating for turning her, just being a pain!).

@littlejoy: lol at the lighter roller skates. I'd be so horrified if I saw Lo do that!

My mom has been stressing about finishing off the baby's quilt before he's born, even though I've told her countless times that he isn't going to be able to use it for god knows how long. "But what if he's cold?" I've showed her the Halo blankets, and SwaddleMes, which she thinks are weird. She also has been pointing out cute bumpers, even though I explain that they're considered a safety hazard. I think back-sleeping is a novelty to her, too.

My MIL asks my opinion/policy on a bunch of stuff, and hasn't explicitly called me crazy and overprotective yet, but I get the look!

My mom doesn't really comment on anything in a negative manner. Sometimes she just seems clueless that you were supposed to do things a certain way now - like sleeping on their backs. She also mentions that when we were babies, we just sat on her lap in the car. She also thinks it's a PITA that the cribs don't have a side that drops down. I get the safety reason but I also think it's a pain. When you are short and your baby fell asleep, it's really hard to get them in the crib gently.

How when she was older I didn't rock her to sleep (she hated to be rocked) MIL would TRY AND TRY when babysitting to rock her to sleep and it drive me nuts because she would fall asleep after 2 minutes if you just laid her down and walked away.

Generally both our parents are really supportive of whatever we do/buy but my mom (mom of 6, grandma to 8) totally didn't understand my anxiety over LO sleeping on her back and SIDS. Or car seat safety. I mean, she's supportive over whatever I want to do, but doesn't understand the obsession with car crashes.

Extended rear facing, for sure. My mom gets all huffy about it when I say it's safer, but I was FF at four months. They also don't understand the cloth diapering, even though I only cloth diaper part-time. I also got major side-eye for not wanting to do CIO (even though I ended up doing it) and for still feeding her in the middle of the night after six months. Oh, and breastfeeding past the time of her getting teeth.

Both sets of parents think our sleep sacks are ao weird and subtly or not subtly ask when we are going to let him have blankets.

Also, we make our own baby food (which my mom thinks is super hippy. Ummmm or cheap.) But when we are out and about we tend to use jarred or pouches. My mom is always talking about how "they didn't make combinations back then. It was just peas or just broccoli or just appleaauce." Which I don't think I believe!

My parents & grandparents are always amazed (and probably in disbelief at times) at the gear, parenting styles, and general kid stuff we use today.

What would your parents and grandparents laugh at?

For me, my mom cannot believe we don't put anything in the crib with LO. ... "A bumper will not kill her!"

When I asked my mom if she did CIO or not, she said that didn't exist in the 80's.

My dad hates childproofing (I also had a Barbie with roller skates that sparked when you rolled them, soooo).

My grandparents & great-grandpa loved that we had a homebirth, and didn't understand why people were so concerned.

My other grandma gets a little snarky at times, and makes fun of the gear, but she LOVES the Ergo. She reads our blog (lol), and always calls me to talk about photos of our baby in the carrier. She wishes they had them in the 50's.
