@Mrsbells: I actually found that my water usage went down when we moved from our apartment to our house. At our complex, they averaged the water usage for all apartments in your class (in our case, all the two-bedrooms paid the same), and it fluctuated. Since we use less water than most, our bill can be significantly lower. Will the new place have a dishwasher? Newer dishwashers can be more economical because they use less water than washing by hand.

@Snapdragon: I dont know for sure, but they do have a boiler room that you can access from the master bedroom.

@evansjamie: yeah we are worried because we dont really keep track of our water usage. I think I waste water when I do the dishes because I let the water run to rinse everything.

@littlek: the duplex looks nicer for sure but they are both about 15 minutes apartment so the neighbourhood is the same

Going off our current situation, I'd move into the duplex with 1.5 baths. DH and I live in a 2 bed/1 bath apartment (no pets or LOs yet), and as soon as our lease is up in a couple months, it is a requirement that our next place have at least 1.5 bathrooms! We are so cramped for space now.

Do you know what kind of heating the duplex unit has? That can significantly change a utility bill.

I guess it depends on how much water, gas, electric, etc. you use. We are selective flushers (sounds gross, it's not really), only do laundry a few times a week, and work hard to only run the dishwasher a few times a week. Our water/sewer bill isn't very high ($87-ish every other month), and the electric/gas will fluctuate based on the season.

I would stay in a place that includes heat unless the other place is tons cheaper.

Wow, that's an expensive heating bill. Are there other differences between the two places? Like location, aesthetics, etc. that might help make your decision easier?

@littlek: if we stay in our current place heating, water and sewer fees are included we only pay electric & gas. I think the heating cooling all depends onthe heating system the apartment has some places told us is can be around an extra 200-350 a month

we are currently in a one bedroom apartment and want to move into a two bedroom place in a couple months when our lease is up. we initially wanted to leave to a different apartment complex because the two bedroom apartment where we are is a bit more expensive than others ($1450 and upwards). we considered going for a duplex ( apartment with more than one floor) Now the issue is that even though the other apartment is slightly cheaper, all the bills are our responsibility which might work out to be more expensive. Also the other apartment is smaller even thought is has 1.5 bath and bedrooms upstairs.
I will add that we initially didnt like our current place because the management were very rude to us, and we vowed we wouldnt renew our lease, but that was 2 years ago and things have been fine since then.
What would you do?

ETA: duplex apartment has washer and dryer in the apartment but they are tiny and old looking so they may use up a lot of electricity and water. Our current place has multiple shared laundry rooms
