@Purpledaisy: I would still pump, but could you pump in your car with a cover over yourself? I think that's what I would do if I felt too uncomfortable! My 2nd option would just be to pump in the storage closet and try not to think about the awkwardness...

Update: I sucked it up and pumped! It wasn't even close to as awkward as I was anticipating. Really, I was stressing out over nothing. I think the manager had already told him because he seemed to be expecting it. It sounds lame but I am really proud of myself!

Can you ask your manager to tell him you'll be using that room? Then you don't have to personally deal with it? I understand feeling awkward, but definitely don't let it stop you!

@Purpledaisy: I was talking about pumping as soon as you get home from work to completely empty your breasts/relieve engorgement and minimize the time that your breasts remain full.

@Purpledaisy: Haha that's sort of hilarious. There was an empty office near my old desk that a new mom would go into twice a day and close the door, and it took me MONTHS to figure out why. I just thought she was going in there to make a personal call or something, but I was like, huh, why every day? Finally it clicked when another coworker who had just come back from leave when in there.

I hope you did go in there and pump. If he doesn't know what you are doing and you tell him, all the better. He'll learn something today!

@Corduroy: My coworkers have noooooo clue what I'm doing. I leave my office with my big pumping bag every day at 11:00 and 3:30, and at 3:30, they're always like "Have a good night!" and I'm like "I'm not going home yet." hahaha - they have no clue. :P

Thank you so much everyone! I know that I'm making way to big of a deal about this but I just can't help it! My dh thinks I'm crazy and doesn't understand at all.

@brownie: that what I keep telling myself, that's its my legal right and that I'm just hurting myself if I don't us it.

@laineysmom: Pumping in my car would be worse. How the parking lot is set up my car is definitely within view. I only pump once at work and I already pump in the morning since I get my best out put then. I was also thinking of adding in a night pumping for those couple of days since she is currently sttn. I'm trying to only use that as a last resort though.

@lovebird: he hardly ever leaves for lunch unfortunately :(

@sleepymonkey: he doesn't have any kids and neither does pretty much anyone else I work with. I wish that they did! Most of them are young and single.

@corduroy: That's the thing, I know that no one really cares! It's not like he's going to go home and think about me pumping!!(um well at least I hope he doesn't haha)

I would pump. He probably already knows what you're doing in there.

If one of my co-workers went in or near my boss's office for 30 minutes 3x a day I would NEED to know what's going on by day two. I would be thrilled to discover they were pumping and not discussing company secrets. Maybe I'm worse than most people but I'm guessing it's a natural tendency.

Realistically, everyone in my office knows who's pumping and where. It's hard not to notice from time to time. There are those "Where' Susan?" or "Why is she carrying her purse into the closet at 9:00" moments. But nobody cares and everyone ignores it. At least that's what I'm telling myself for when I go back in two weeks. :)

I would definitely still pump, although I maybe wouldn't announce what I was doing unless he asked! And if he's shy, like you said, he might not ask! Just go in there, lock the door, and do your thing!

I don't think not pumping is an option. You would be hurting so bad. So find an alternative solution that works for you. Either address it with him, or just go on about your business and let him think what he wants to think.

i'd still pump. i think it'll be less awkward than you think. i travel for work sometimes and i felt awkward about asking people (all men) i barely knew for a room to pump in, but they are all surprisingly accommodating and most of them have babies themselves and understand that working moms have to pump! does the acting manager have kids? i think if you just tell him what you're doing and make it in a non-dramatic way "hey i'm going to pump in the closet...oh the joys of motherhood!" he will probably just smile and say okay, and thats the end of it. you can do it!

I would do 1 of 2 things.. If you REALLY don't feel comfortable pumping in the closet, pump in your car with a cover. If that's even worse (which I think it is) then I wouldn't pump at all BUT make sure you pump after your nursing session in the morning and as soon as you get home. I definitely wouldn't completely cut out pumping or else you body will likely regulate to that output and it will take a while to get your supply back.

It is hard to be obvious about it. I had access to a spare office but had to occasionally kick people out of it with my bag and all. At my new job, I had to put paper over the window and lock the door. And say I was busy if someone knocked. I just made up my mind that it was my legal right to do and no one can take that away from me.

Good luck. If you stress too much it may affect your abilities so try (easier said than done) to relax.

So at my work the only place I have to pump is in a storage closet in the manager's office. Before I started back to work I was very nervous about pumping there because I work almost exclusively with men and my boss who is always there when I'm there(and in the office) is also male. Before I came back I text him about using the storage closet to pump to avoid the awkwardness of talking about it in person and it was fine and I've been perfectly comfortable with the situation ever since.

Well the manager is going to be on vacation next week and an "acting manager" will be there while I'm there. He is usually a regular employee like me but will take over some manager duties as needed. I feel super awkward about pumping while he's there! First of all I don't want to have to bring up what I'm doing in there(there's no other reason to go in there and lock the door for 30mins). And the closet is literally right there! I'm sure that my boss can hear my pump but he is someone that I'm very comfortable with for the most part so it's never matter much to me after my first week back or so. And there is totally nothing wrong with this other guy to make me uncomfortable around him, I just don't know him very much and he's very shy.

So, I'm going to be stressing out all weekend about what I should do. I could A. Stop being a baby and just say hey I'm going to use the closet to pump, don't mind me. Or B. be a baby and just don't pump for those three days he will be there.

Just FYI I work 4 days a week 7 hour shifts. I EBF and have had no supply problems so far and have a pretty good sized freezer stash if I had to dip into it if my supply is down from not pumping for a couple of days.

Thank you so much if you have read all of this! Anyone have any thoughts or have been in a similar situation?
