@ladybee: I'm sorry you have to deal with that with your son. My sister is pretty upset about it all-- it's a lot to take in.

@Foodnerd81: my son is the kid who a common cold turns into breathing treatments, wheezing, a barking cough and bronchiolitis. Every other kid at daycare had or has the "cold" he has now. They all got over it in a few days. We are on call with our ped and waiting to see if we need to be admitted. Honestly, if your baby doesn't have the same issues I wouldn't worry too much. For M (and it sounds like your nephew) it's never as simple as a cold so the symptoms sound way worse then the cold.

I would go. Lingering colds are hard to keep away from. I usually follow our daycares sick policy in these situations, which is fever free and diarrhea/vomiting free for 24 hours.

@skibobrown: not mobile-- for now she is stuck pretty much where I put her :)
And my nephew isn't tht enthralled with her so I'm not worried about him trying to hug her and stuff. I think we will go. Thanks!

Another point -- is the baby mobile yet? It's a lot easier to keep them away from germs before they get mobile. Just wash your hands, and have everyone else handing the baby do the same. Then keep the sick child far, far away from your baby. Once they're mobile it's a whole different story b/c they get into everything and then put their hands in their mouths.

@Foodnerd81: that might be a good idea- just play it by ear and either go to your parents if you feel you need to, or go home Sunday if your nephew seems worse than you thought. And just keep wiping stuff down! That's what I had to do when I took my FL LO to NJ last weekend!! SO MANY GERMS in that cold weather ughhh!

@kjpugs: No fever. And I talked to my sister about it, we are going to see how she feels tomorrow. I asked her what she would do and she admitted she was a germophobe when her son was a baby and wouldn't have gone, but now she probably would but isn't sure.

It's a 4 hours drive to my sister's, 5 to my parents. We are planning to stay 2 nights, we could shorten it to 1 night and drive back after the party on Sunday.

@Foodnerd81: we went to stay at my family's for four days over Chinese New Year and LO had a cough. My family didn't turn us away. ;) My nephew did end up catching it but no one is throwing a fit. Just chuckling about it bc it's just what happens.

DH's nieces stayed with us for 10 days over Christmas. The little one was sick and coughing. As a result everyone got sick. DH, BIL, LO, MIL, FIL and finally me which of course turned into pneumonia. But we only see them a few times a year bc they live in GA. I would still have them stay with us next time even if she was sick too.

ETA: good to know you have options besides skipping the party all together. I know my nieces and nephews are bummed each time we can't make it back. And I feel like worst aunt on the universe on missing it too.

A few questions-

1) what is wrong with your nephew? Fever? Or just the runny nose/cough stuff? I feel like severity matters.

2) how far are you traveling? Is it close enough that you can make your trip shorter? Or arrive later to give your nephew time to feel better? If you could make it 1 or 2 nights I might get a hotel if it made me feel better. Maybe suggest that you might to your sister- if she feels he's not going to get your LO sick I'm sure she'll say "no no don't, we have this room for your LO, my LO feels better"- etc. If she thinks LO could get your LO sick, she would probably say that's a good idea.

@locavore_mama: He CAN take allergy meds but they put him in a fog and he is generally miserable. Before my sister bought a house, we always stayed in a hotel when we visited my parents because he is so uncomfortable. If we opted to keep C away from my sister's, I would consider having DH stay there and me and C stay with my parents. He's that uncomfortable.

@skibobrown: that's a very good point.

I would still go to be honest. I personally would not miss my nephew's birthday party because of this. If you feel better about it then stay at your parents. Can DH take allergy meds? How severely allergic is he?

@T.H.O.U.: Well, he has had a few respiratory issues this year so they went to the ped, who says he himself is at risk from even a regular cold because of a wheeze and he could end up in the ER if my sister doesn't do a nebulizer with him, it's not asthma but something sort of similar. So, I do believe it is just a regular cold, but it's a big deal for him and the ped said to keep him away from germs because it could make him a lot sicker. So the short answer is, I believe it is just a cold, not the flu. But it's a big deal at the same time, though no reason to think it would affect my LO as anything more. He is coughing though, which spreads germs so nicely.

And my poor sister is dealing with a lot so I'm trying to keep my crazies to myself :)

I would do it if it's just a cold. I had my daughter in daycare by that age, so she was exposed to lots of colds. Sometimes she ended up catching them, which was no fun, but it has to happen eventually.

I guess I would need to better define "cold".

My daughter went a few weeks this winter with a cough but she never had a fever and it was just due to the cold weather.

But if its really a cold, that could maybe be the flu then maybe it would be a different situation.

We are traveling this weekend for my 3 year old nephew's birthday party, planning to stay at my sister's house (mom of nephew). He has a cold and is coughing right now. With a 6.5 month old baby, would you stay at their house?

We could also stay at my parents' house an hour away, but DH is allergic to their dogs, so he'd be pretty miserable. Or stay at a hotel but obviously that gets expensive.

I try not to be totally germaphobic, and feel a certain amount of exposure to germs is healthy, but I also am not about to expose a baby to sickness on purpose. So, what's sort of normal on this issue?

We could also cancel the trip altogether, but that would make me very sad, plus we have to get my dog from my sister at some point soon. We can reschedule, miss the party, obviously, but we are busy the next few weekends too. And like i said, we have to get the dog.
