@Kelli_Deluxe: If your insurance won't cover an RE, I would at least get a second opinion and consider switching OBs. Sure, bedside manner is important, but the main purpose of a doctor is to provide good appropriate medical care!

Just going to echo what everyone is saying: monitoring is important and worth it. Go with an RE. Good luck! :goodluck:

I second everything that @raintreebee: said. I don't think I could have had a successful cycle without the knowledge that monitoring provided. You will gain an understanding of how you are responding, what adjustments can be made during the cycle to set you up for success, and if a cycle is going to be a bust before you even get to any procedure at all.

So yes, even if I loved my doctor, if I felt that I didn't support his method of fertility practice, I would move on for a second opinion elsewhere. And as you can see from many of us that have gone through this, monitoring is a very important part of the process. It's good that you're stopping, and considering this before going any further.

If I could not get on board with what a doctor wanted to do, I'd find a new one. I did do two cycles of Clomid with my OB who didn't monitor and only did the 21 day progesterone test also, and while I didn't agree with what she told me. "Everyone ovulated on CD14", "charting is useless"... all I wanted from her was the Clomid to give a shot, hoping I'd be an easy Clomid fix case, which she gave me. But I quickly moved on when the 2 cycles didn't work. My RE pretty much called those 2 cycles a waste cause there was no data on how I responded and how it effected my lining.

I think most REs would consider unmonitored stimulated cycles dangerous. For good reason. You may over respond and have too many follicles, ending up with too many babies. You may have poor lining due to the meds. Your tubes may not be clear. You may have a cyst, etc etc. And you may be taking these meds that have been demonstrated to increase cancer risk without knowing that they are working properly. That is why most REs have a lifetime limit on the # of clomid cycles for instance. I would reconsider whether your doctor's plan is actually right for you. Sorry to be harsh. I just get upset reading about doctors who throw out these serious meds without proper monitoring.

I would go see an RE. I personally wouldn't waste my time with an OB who didn't do monitoring. I would want to know what was going on with my body and not put my body through meds/procedures if I didn't know what was really going on.

I agree with the others, see an RE! At the very least though, make sure your progesterone monitoring is at 7dpo, NOT CD21, because not everyone O's on CD14. Also, maybe you could talk your doctor into doing a progesterone pool. Basically taking the test 3 days between 5-9dpo and averaging them. I've been told that it's a better way to get an accurate reading.

@Kelli_Deluxe: My insurance didn't cover RE either, but it wasn't crazy bad......I mean it adds up but ultrasounds were about $200 and blood work was $50 once we got into IUI and such it got pricey, but I would of you can try an RE

I would 1000% go see an RE. I say this because I don't respond well to Clomid, and I only responded to Femara at the highest dose. Without monitoring I never would have known what was working and what wasn't.

@Kelli_Deluxe: if you've talked to him and he won't adjust the plan just because it's "not something they do" rather than because he feels strongly that it's not necessary in your specific situation then I would definitely go to an RE for a second opinion.

I would talk to him and if he won't do any monitoring or additional testing I'd go see an RE, even if it meant having to save a couple months for treatments. I didn't have any insurance for treatments either, so I know how much that sucks. However the consultations and early testing were covered. Maybe it would be the same for you?

@blackbird: I'm on Femara, and previously unmonitored Clomid. When I say monitored, I mean ultrasound monitoring throughout the cycle to see if your follicles are even responding, if you need a trigger shot, etc. A blood draw on day 21, is after the fact

@Truth Bombs: I did. Monitoring is something they just don't do. It's my understanding some ob/gyn's do it and some don't.

@2littlepumpkins: He's an ob/gyn. My insurance won't cover anything at an RE once it gets the "infertility" label

Just found out my doctor doesn't do any monitoring on meds aside from the 21 day progesterone draw. This presents a big problem for me bc, 1) my progesterone is always low, even when I'm pregnant, 2) I'm clearly not ovulating every month, so drawing next cycle to see doesn't really provide answers AFTER the fact.

So my question: if you LOVED your doctor, from his plan for you to his bedside manner, but he didn't perform something you believe you needed, would you switch to a different doctor who does?
