In LA in college we had a lot of regular beggars so we never gave money but we dropped off backpacks and food. Once someone told us they were hungry and needed money to eat. DH had an unopened bag of chips and offered those. The "hungry" homeless person straight up said no... I was already in line so I said "hold on and I'll just buy it for you" &amp; I did (with a drink). He got all mad and was like "I asked for $3! Not for the hotdog!" and stormed off. I was TRAUMATIZED from this episode for maybe years? I know there are plenty of reputable charities they can seek assistance from if they are truly in need. </p> <p>I do donate to the food bank, make charitable donations to registered organizations, and volunteer.<br /> If I was donating the clothes and someone had asked for them, I would have given them too.</p> <p>Usually we save up most of our clothes we were planning on donating, and then take them to Peru with us. One really cold day, this guy came up to me in front of Starbucks and asked if I would get him some food and a drink. I said yes thinking I would get him some hot coffee and one of their premade sandwich/fruit trays. He proceeded to rattle off an order that involved a multi-worded description of a frappucino, a brownie, and a cookie. I felt slightly taken advantage of, but I still bought it. :-/ Oh well, people need frappucinos and super sugary food too, right? He said 5 family members were coming from Cuba tomorrow, including his wife and daughter, and they had nothing -- including clothes -- with them.</p> <p>I told him that almost everything was summer party dresses and that they wouldn't have much use for them. But he wanted them anyway. I pulled out all the casual clothes and gave them to him, but donated all the party dresses.</p> <p>The thing is, I'm a sucker. I have always given lots of money to the homeless, needy, etc my whole life. I remember giving one guy a dollar once and he went into a store and bought a beer and one shot it while I was watching!!!!!</p> <p>I've gotten better since moving to New York because Mr Bee does not believe in giving people on the street money at all.</p> <p>What was he going to do with my clothes anyway? It's not like he was asking me for money, and it wasn't a big deal for me to give it to him.</p> <p>Anyway Mr Bee said that if it were him, he wouldn't have given the clothes.</p> <p>What would you have done?</p> <p>PS - I still give money to people on the street. </p>
