@Tanjowen: well, everyone we came into close contact with for 5 days got sick, but then we had to go back to work. With a newborn I would be really nervous, but germ anxiety is a thing of mine. According to Google is says it's majorly contagious for 3-5 days, but up to 2 weeks in the stool, so if your neice didn't wash her hands well after the restroom, even a small amount of germs are potent enough to spread. I'd call the nurse line at your ped to see what they say.

@DesertDreams88: Since you lived through the norovirus, question for you. My sister wants to visit Tuesday to see the baby. Last sickness in their house was 12/26. So a week ago. Is it safe for them to visit at this point?

I would cancel the baptism. One can be shedding stomach bug virus for up to two weeks and that would be a hard pass for me with a newborn. A newborn could get dehydrated very easily and I would do just about anything to avoid having my baby hospitalized.

@babybunnylove: Are all of the godfather’s kids planning on attending? Will your church require the godfather to hold your baby or could he just stand next to the godmother (who can hold the baby)? Are there any people flying into town for the baptism?

@babybunnylove: I think it’s important to know how long it’s been since someone in his family was actively sick. Is everyone better today? Or is someone still throwing up etc? That being said if it was the day before and someone in the household had been actively sick in the last 24 hours I would want to reschedule.

I’m going through a tough decision right now. My DS is supposed to be baptized on Sunday. His godfather has had a stomach virus going around his 3 kids this week. Not sure what we do? We do not want to cancel as it’s important to us to do the baptism soon.

@MrsF: good for you! MIL casually announced over dinner when we were visiting this weekend that she was just getting over a stomach bug. I was incredibly anxious the whole time we were at their house and still anxious once we got home that we might have caught it. Thankfully we didn’t, but I won’t mess with vomit germs. If she had told us before we wouldn’t have gone. Christmas or not!

I'm right now missing a holiday party after keeping myself, my husband and 3 kids home. My aunt who is hosting called today to tell me that her granddaughter had been throwing up all day yesterday but seemed ok today. I'm sure my whole extended family thinks I'm nuts but I just couldn't do it. This thread is making me feel less crazy!

I'm here from the future (Sydney, Australia which went through the worst flu season on record this past winter) to tell you to lock your family down. I swear that every person I know got influenza or norovirus or some godawful plague this winter - I basically reverse quarantined our family and somehow we didn't get sick. The bugs are tough this year and if your sister's family is visiting your parents I think its really likely they will pick up the virus.

You absolutely made the right decision. Even if you aren't knowingly seeing sick people be crazy vigilant with handwashing and hygiene. Its a freaking jungle out there.

@Tanjowen: I'm praying none of you get sick. My sister thinks that sicknesses are inevitable and good to help build a child's immune system. I can't stand that. I prefer to avoid people and try to prevent illness when possible. And good for your for changing your clothes when you got home! Great idea.

@Tanjowen: at least you were given a heads up! My sister in laws 7 week old was throwing up a ton yesterday at mil. After the third episode she says ' I bet she has the same thing her brother had two days ago'. By this point we'd already been exposed to everything and the 5 year old brother had been touching all the food. Really hoping my 11 month old doesn't get sick

You won't be on the shit list much longer after your family contracts the norovirus. Not that I would wish that upon anybody, but if they do get it, then they will absolutely understand why you made the decision you did! Just catching up, but I would also have stayed away (and been upset with your sister for exposing everyone to it).

@SweetiePie: It was my husband’s brother. The whole thing was annoying and dramatic. My husband defended them saying it was their first kid and they didn’t know better. I think they felt bad but they never expressly apologized while they were here and they ended up leaving at 3 am a few days after Christmas without even a thanks (we had ordered their kid Christmas pj’s and a stocking, etc so that was a bit frustrating as well). We eventually got a card in the mail that apologized. It was just hard enough to be hosting a holiday (which we did because everyone wanted to meet the baby and we didn’t want to travel) and I had been in the hospital 2 weeks prior with some postpartum complications. It was just a disastrous Christmas all around.

@Shantuck: That is horrible and I would be so extremely angry. My first son's ever sickness is also thanks to my sister - 11 months old and we went to her house for thanksgiving and her kid was very sick with a chest cold and she didn't bother to mention it because she knew I wouldn't come. I'm just glad she bothered to tell me about this sickness.

I went to my parents and we are home now. Made everyone change clothes and washing hands religiously even though my parents haven't been exposed (yet).

That’s a good compromise but I would get out of there way before they arrive. I cant believe they are coming. It shouldn’t matter whether it’s Christmas or not. When you’re sick you’re sick and shouldn’t expose other people. They can celebrate another day. Merry Christmas!
