I keep a leash in my car for picking up stray dogs. Lol I'm serious. I would take them to the shelter, for pictures and listing on the website as lost, as well as scanning for microchips. Then since it was a kill shelter, I would take them home and try to find them homes myself.

I'm a HUGE dog lover and definite softie with animals. I would like to think I would have waited. But maybe the dog was barking/digging/anxious and she doesn't feel the same way about dogs? I'm trying to imagine why she might do the quick hand-off like that.....

Our shelter here is a no-kill one and has been held up as an example of what a pound should look like. With that said, I would still be incredibly sad to drop an animal off.

DH and I find "stray" dogs by his family's vacation home all the time. We catch the animals and try to find their worried owners. If we cannot find them we take them with us to the house and call security to see if anyone has reported a missing animal.

i've rescued tons of animals since i was in elementary school and make sure they get adopted if they go to the animal shelter (or i tell them i will take them in). my last 2 cats and dog were strays. i would love to open a no-kill shelter, but it might just be too heartbreaking. i <3 animals.

When there are tags I tend to do everything I can to contact the owners. If they are true strays I will take them to one of the local animal shelters. I've picked up two before and spent the next 5 hours getting them accepted at the shelter.

I am the same way and would have done the same thing as you! Except I might have gone and gotten the dog from the pound, lol. When I was a little younger I used to dream of finding a stray, then I'd "have" to keep it.

@yoursilverlining, awwwww <3. There was a dog on the highway once that I had to call the police department on because we were all whizzing by him at 70 mph. he was in the lane nearest the middle divider. Totally stuck.

@mediagirl: Good for you!!! I would have done something similar, I'm a total softie for animals, especially when they are clearly pets. One day DH and I were on our way somewhere, we'd just turned the corner from our house onto one of the busier streets in our subdivision and there were two dogs running around the street (having a great time at that!). I made DH pull over so we could grab them and try and find their owners. One of them scooted off before we could catch him but the other came right along with us. We knocked on doors for about 30 minutes until someone recognized him and sent us to the right house. The owners didn't even realise he was missing until we got there. His buddy dog had apparently run home, and was sitting at the top of their stairs wagging at us! lol! She thanked us and then shouted at her husband to "fix that flippin gate already!"

Goodness, I would have given it a good few days (3-5) to try and find the owner.

I can’t believe your neighbor didn’t keep the dog longer; especially since it had a tag. If it has a tag and is in good condition; it’s someone’s loved family member!

I would have done the same thing you did; I’m a big softie for pets and I would hope if my pets ever got out, someone would try to help her, too.

Last summer there was a stray dog walking around our neighborhood that we/our neighbors didn’t recognize. We lived off of a busy street so I got her and brought her inside for her safety (she was very friendly) and got her a bowl of water and called the number on the tag. It ended up being the number for a vet out of state, and they were awesome about trying to figure out which former “patient” of theirs the dog was. They gave me a couple of numbers to try and luckily one called me back. They were able to come and get their girl. :)

When I moved from ME to FL, in SC there was a poor dog running down the side of I-95. I pulled onto the shoulder and was able to coax him into my car. He was soooooooooooooo skinny and terrified; but as soon as he got in the car with me, he curled right up and put his head on my lap. I really wanted to keep him, but was in no place in my life to have a dog so I ended up finding a local shelter. Since it was a kill shelter, I called them every single day to check on him and told them I would take him if they were going to put him down. A family with kids adopted him!

I would have done the same thing considering it wasn't really a stray animal, but someone's PET! Also, your neighbor should have waited a little, geez!

I once picked up a bulldog I almost hit in the street and took him to my apartment in college because he had a tag. He was so friendly he hopped right in my car and we hung out for a couple hours before his family came to get him. I would want someone to do the same for me with my cats!!!!

I would have done the same thing you did. It would have been nice if they would have kept the dog at least for the evening like they said they would! Glad you found the owner and hopefully the dog is safe back home.

Growing up we used to bottle feed stray kittens we found without a mother. We lived near farms so there were a lot and the mothers often got killed.

@MediaGirl: (((HUGS))) I would have done the same thing! Pets are family members to me, and I would have done everything possible to reunite the dog with its family. You totally scored some serious karma for your act(s) of kindness!

Wow, I mean it was nice the neighbor grabbed the dog and kept him safe, but it would have been nice to at least try to give 24 hours for the family to be in touch and pick him up. It sounds like maybe they were just at work or something.

Yesterday a neighbor wrote on our group Facebook page that she had found a dog. She said she would keep it in her backyard until the evening and then take him to the pound. She posted pictures of the dog's tag and the dog. When I saw the post, I googled the number and found the owner, who appears to live a mile and a half from our neighborhood. I told the neighbor what I had found but, just an hour after she posted her comment, she had taken the dog to the pound!! The owner had not responded to calls on the phone number on the dog's tag.

I ended up driving to the house that I found matched the phone number and left a note for the family (who wasn't home) to let them know where their dog was. Last I checked on the pound page, someone had picked the dog up!!

I'm an old softie when it comes to animals. :) What would you have done?
